What is going on on Giant Bomb right now?

If those two were the best people for the job then who cares. They should hire an Asian woman just because? Was there even anyone that wasn't a white male apply that was qualified?

That's pretty much how kids reply when they lose an argument.

Classy.

Some people are harassing Samantha Allen (in a sadly misguided attempt to defend GB) for expressing her opinion about the GB hires. Seems she was hoping for more diversity.

To be fair, someone asked her "what if the best candidates were men" and she responded fuck off. Leigh Alexander also tends to say extremely aggressive things, so her harsh comments inspired some very mean retorts. Leigh, in general, tends to bring our the anger in people.

Both sides are being EQUALLY petty and meanspirited about this whole affair.

If this is a true sample of how this person (never heard of him/her) usually acts towards others on twitter, I have no problem with people being rude in response.

So the guy pointing out that maybe two experienced white guys who fit in with the GB staff (Dan having experience in long form video content for one) getting the job deserves being told to fuck off?

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm a bit slow tonight. Sorry Banana.

But yeah, no one should be attacking others for expressing their opinion and the GB crew definitely don't need their 'fans' throwing out hurtful remarks and harrasment.

Who in the Giant Bomb NeoGAF thread has attacked another in the way this thread is implying?

There were couple of rebuttal happening regarding the issue which cased this

The nasty attitude this thread displays to any criticism (genuine and valid or not) towards Giant Bomb is part of why no other mods ever come here and why when I explained the sort of things that happen here a lot, some of the other mods were kind of shocked and wondered why we even allow this thread to exist.

I argued that it wasn't that bad. Please stop trying to prove me wrong.

Granted, the tension have died a lot since then and the place became better than say twitter, but the community is very cagey about criticism regardless of any issue. This wouldn't be first either.

If a lady applies for a job yet doesn't get it, why does it mean that the hiring company is sexist?

I'm sure Giant Bomb don't base their hirings solely on race or gender.

I thought it was clear I was talking about the Samantha person, the only one who fit my comment. The question being asked was entirely reasonable and the response was laughable.

what kind of response is that?

The further replies are even worse. Going on about patriarchy superiority and basically calling giantbomb sexist and racist. What the fuck do you think the community is going to say? Ok and thank you? It's not ok to attack people but this is the internet. It's not like people don't know this. It's like baiting 4chan, you're going to lose.

The problem with the non-video internet is its very hard to read tone. That said "no qualified weemin'" is a long used trope and pretty offensive in of itself. Its not a position that holds up under any scrutiny.

And it really gets under peoples skin.

This bullshit parity mentality is slowling poisonning the industry, the same way it did -and does- other segments. Who cares what you look like, what your skin color, gender or sexual orientation is? Really? So now people will get claim a spot simply because they are a woman, gay, or black? What happened to the old best person for the job mentality?

Utterly preposterous. But so convenient in today's politiclaly correct, over-sensitive, hypocrite society.

If (person who posted original tweet) typically acts this way, they see no problem with the rude response (towards that person).

So basically, Samantha's reasoning is that having a woman on the team is more important than having a well qualified applicant. I'm not saying that a woman can't be that well qualified applicant, it's just the idea that someone's gender is more important than the line of work one can put out in a professional environment. Ridiculous. The dude had a legitimate question.

especially in this case, it is blown out of proportion. The criticism is fair to a point but both parts have said some insane things especially to a fair question.

Not helping what? I didn't know what was going on exactly either. We can't talk about it in a civil manner? C'mon.

I mean we're already talking about it on the OT for about a day now. People have been doing a good job over there keeping people up to speed.

The company I work for hired a female. It was a CIS position. She has a degree. She was the only female that applied in the past 5 years. They found out she couldn't do her job. Didn't want to fire her because she was a woman. She now does less than the intern.

All for "public image".

This is how the world works. Both extremes are ugly.

Sorry, my mistake. I assumed you meant the part about not being surprised people are rude towards them was in reference to Samantha's "Go fuck yourself".

It's important to note that most of the attacks and hate-speech is coming from anti-feminist and anti-"social justice warrior" groups like /r/tumblrinaction, and not Giant Bomb fans. The discourse on GAF and Giant Bomb has largely been very civil so far.

It is really shitty that it got so out of hand so quickly.

I mean we're already talking about it on the OT for about a day now. People have been doing a good job over there keeping people up to speed.

So people are either supposed to either completely randomly wander into there or hear about it elsewhere and enter into the thread? What kind of containment is that? Where's the cutoff between what justifies a new thread?

Have to admit, the childish responses like this are really not helping things

Reading the tweets you guys posted, she kinda comes out as a spoiled little kid who feels entitled to anything just because she's a woman.

Or do they have some valid and serious reason to think they were treated unfairly?

We don't know who applied. I think we know of two females who applied (I think one was Zoe Quinn though am not 100% sure. They were posted in the GB thread and confirmed by saying so on twitter) but from what I read didn't have the qualifications. They needed a Senior Editor and a Video Producer iirc.

That's much more civil than I would react if a bunch of manbabies started calling me a cunt because I pointed out a video game website they like is a whites-only boys club.

Yup, I agree. She was handed a great starting point to have a conversation and decided to respond with hostility. But..

She was met with some really awful personal attacks.

I think we all would benefit from more diverse voices in gaming. Giant Bomb's hiring is not the problem rather a symptom of a problem that's not going to be solved on twitter. But, it would be nice if we could talk about it without being gross.

Kudos to the GB staff for immediately distancing themselves rather than placating any of the MRA assholes/fedoras. A little less kudos for continuing the boys club culture of video game journalism. Ah well.

Awful awful awful people are (verbally) attacking women who applied and others who dared to be critical of the fact Giant Bomb hired more white guys.

Disgusting behaviour.

[And I love Giant Bomb in case anyone decides to make any dumb assumptions, have last weeks UPF streaming on the laptop beside me]

To be fair. She told a guy to go fuck himself.

If anything, she is just as bad :/

Yes, it wasn't as bad as say twitter, but I wouldn't be surprised if it an accumulative effects where episodes such as this where criticising people who are criticising had an effect on Jeff about hus fans being so infatuating with the site this much.
