What is the best mecha anime?

A silly question, since they vary a lot in terms of realism, scale, seriousness...but I'm interested in polling opinions since there's such a variety of them.

I know it is a really bad post to GAF, but I LOVE Magic Knights of Rayearth "second season"

There's a lot of good mecha out there. You've probably heard of Gundam, but there are a LOT of Gundam series, and not all of them are great. 08th MS Team is really good, and so is the movie, Char's Counterattack. Gundam 00 is also pretty good for something more recent and in HD quality.

Knights of Sidonia would also be one of my top picks, and is on Netflix. ALSO SEASON 2 JULY 3RD!

Giant Robo if you want a vaguely mecha based greatest anime ever

08th MS Team for more realistic end of the spectrum

Gunbuster for super robot

Turn A, 08th MS Team or Zeta are all valid Gundam picks. If we can include manga, Gundam: The Origin wins it by a landslide. Sure hope the entirety of it gets animated.

Outside of Gundam, there's Eva of course (Which might be considered more "Kaiju" than mecha). I don't love Gunbuster, but I can really appreciate it, so it could certainly be on the list. The original Eureka Seven has some of the best character moments I've seen in a mecha show and the choreography and music are absolutely amazing.

In terms of "so bad it's amazing", Valvrave is wonderful. It's awful and amazing and beautiful.

Holy crap I'm not the only one! I love Rayearth!

Rayearth needs more love .... it even has way too few representation on Tsubasa except for the mokonas

Also ... Rayearth is an awesome mix of Fantasy RPG, Magical Girl and Space Mecha fights between "countries"
The second season is where most of the mecha stuff happens.

Gundam 08th MS Team. My favorite Gundam series. I even had me a 1/100th scale model.

I also really love Evangelion, Eureka and Gurren Lagan.

Series is way better.

Seconded. DYRL looks amazing but it doesn't stand alone very well. It works better as a companion piece / "hay remember when this happened? Here's that scene again but 10x better looking"

OP: Since you seem to be fishing for recommendations, here's an incredibly varied list:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Original Gundam Movie Trilogy
Zeta Gundam
Gundam Double Zeta
Char's Counterattack
Gundam Unicorn
08th MS Team
Turn A Gundam
Patlabor (start with the original ova and then the films)
King of Braves: GaoGaiGar and GaoGaiGar Final
Marriage of God and Soul: Godannar
FLAG
Aquarion (have not seen evol, recommending the first one)
Code Geass
Gurren Lagann
Armored Trooper VOTOMS
Big O
Tekkaman Blade
Argentosoma
Vision of Escaflowne
Aim for the Top: Gunbuster
Mobile Battleship / Martian Successor Nadesico
Knights of Sidonia
Basquash (have not finished this one, just recommending it based on the batshit premise)

The Big O

Showtime!

My favorite. It's very moody and bizarre- shame the conclusion was rushed and they didn't get third season they anticipated.

My second favorite would be 08th MS Team. Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is also
amazing.

Gundam 0080 The War in the Pocket
Gundam the 08th MS Team

It's weird that those two are the best, when most of Gundam is utter crap.

Well I disagree that most Gundam is utter crap, there is a fair amount of it.

It really isn't that surprising that these to stand out among everything else, because they are very human stories that examine the effects of war, on a more personal scale. There's no crazy invincible heroes and the stories, instead it's just the regular men and women on both sides of the conflict. It's also a lot more ambiguous about who the good and bad guys truly are. It plays around with a lot of things that I think anime misses at times- the subtlety is what makes these two Gundam series so poignant.
