What is the best mecha anime?

If your first answer isn't Gundam(UC timeline) then you are wrong.
There's a lot of good mecha out there. You've probably heard of Gundam, but there are a LOT of Gundam series, and not all of them are great. 08th MS Team is really good, and so is the movie, Char's Counterattack. Gundam 00 is also pretty good for something more recent and in HD quality.

Knights of Sidonia would also be one of my top picks, and is on Netflix. ALSO SEASON 2 JULY 3RD!
I gave up on Sidonia a few episodes into the second season.

I couldn't continue watching what was essentially now a harem anime with mechs, asexual chicks and a giant moe tentacle space monster lmfao.

The first season was great though.

Most of the Universal Century Gundam series are pretty good, and even the mediocre ones are generally lifted by their connections to the broader story. Highlights are, as previously mentioned, 08th MS Team, Char's Counterattack, Zeta, and Unicorn.

The others are really hit or miss, in my opinion.

Outside of Gundam, I enjoyed:

Code Geass – Basically Death Note and mecha. The first season is pretty fun, but the second nosedives into turd territory pretty quickly.

Evangelion – Rebuild is better, but I'm not sure it can really be fully appreciated without having seen the original series.

Aldnoah Zero – Lots of Gundam homages, pretty lame story, cool mecha.

The Big O – Batman meets mecha. So cool.

Eureka Seven – Definitely one of the better mecha anime of the past decade. Sequel series is pretty bad in comparison to the original.

Gurren Lagann – Just watch it. I liked it, but I think it's pretty hit or miss. Animation is gorgeous.

a number of good ones already posted...
the best one not listed already (and would be in the top 5 for me in general)

Full Metal Panic

This is also a great choice, can't believe I didn't say it myself.

Seriously? How disappointing, I wouldn't have expected it to turn into that.

Neon Genesis Evengelion is the best one, and others fun which are recent are Full Metal Panic, Gundam Seed or Macross Frontier

I don't agree with that assessment. There's a weird romance triangle between the girl from the first season (Isana) and a new character that's currently going on, but it's not a drastic tone change from the first season or anything.

lol

A harem anime with characters who all look like fish people. Amazing.

Great mentions so far. Choosing the best mecha anime is difficult because I think a lot of shows deserve to share that position.
Just to raise a few hairs, I'm gonna mention Mazinger Z.

Pretty rare opinion from what I've seen but Gundam 00 is the only one I've truly loved.

I've tried so many others. It's a genre that as a concept interests me extremely but there's so much of stuff I dislike in most efforts.

Favorite mecha gig across all media is Xenogears.

Mecha anime was a mistake. It's nothing but mecha trash.

I liked Godanner and Dual! Back in the day. Gundam Wing and G Gundam also. Will be researching a few of these suggestions.
Oh yeah Full Metal Panic and Bug O as well.

I really liked 00 too, but the second season went downhill. Don't even mention the movie.

I already said 08th MS Team, but other some great (non Gundam) ones are Full Metal Panic, Code Geass, Eureka Seven, and Gurren Lagann.

The second season definitely had its issues, but I kind of preferred the bulk of said issues to the school-days stuff with... oh man, what were their names? It's been a while. Anyway, the stuff with the two characters at school that went on for a while in S1 before things really took off.

Movie was bonkers. Great OST, but...

Gundam UC (TV/Trilogy)
Macross Plus
Escaflowne
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Patlabor (series and movie)
Eureka Seven
RahXephon
Infintie Ryvius
Gunbuster
Turn A Gundam
Gurren Lagann

In terms of action, I could cast my vote elsewhere. However, in terms of plot, absolutely nothing else comes close in my opinion.

Patlabor 2 is one of the best things ever , so its also easily the best mecha anime.

As for shows , well Patlabor OVA is also pretty amazing (the tv series is also good but not as cohesive as the ova , which benefit a lot from a smaller episode structure)

Fafner
It's not my favourite, but I'm rather disappointed nobody has mentioned it yet, so I felt I should give it a shout out.

I used to watch Ninja Senshi Tobikage when I was a kid. Definitely the best mecha anime I've ever seen. Gurren Lagann is close.

Twinsies!

Gundam Wing
Gundam 0080: War In The Pocket
Gundam: O8th MS Team

I've never seen Patlabor. Looks interesting.

I love Full Metal Panic, but Mobile Fighter G Gundam is the one, true best.

it's actually zz gundam fuck you all

Interesting thread. I've been a huge anime/manga fan since before I can remember but I've always pretty much igored Mecha. Then I played Xenogears a few weeks ago and now I want to nose drive into the genre. What are are some good mecha anime that'll give me a similar vibe (complex story, good character development etc...). I've seen.

Eva (The original)
Gurren Lagaan
Gundam (Wing, G, 08th, SD)

The funny thing is I loved all the series listed above but despite that still never dived into the genre.

All suggestions are good! It's kinda hard to limit to a particular series, since the tone varies between series quite a lot, just cause they feature robot, doesn't mean they're similar.

The original Macross was so perfect in its execution. Well, may be except for some scenes with absurdly hideous drawing .
