What is the Best NEW franchise this week?

For ME, the best new franchise on any system, bar none, is none other than Bungie's Masterpiece Halo.

Are there even any other contenders out there? :D

Actually I meant this GEN , but for some reason I can't edit my post. Grrrr.

Ah, that makes sense.

Halo, though some would say GTA had a bigger impact on game design. I'd say Halo, though.

Pikmin. It's never gonna sell millions, but I can always go back to the original and just enjoy playing it -- very calming game to play once you've beaten it.

I never got around to playing Pikmin while I had my cube. It's something like an RTS game correct? Do you think it could be done on the DS?

Best new franchise this generation? Man, that's a tough question.

I'd nominate Pikmin, but Pikmin 1 is just a super flawed game imho. Pikmin 2 is so many hundreds of times better than the first that it's just incredible. If I had to choose "most improved new franchise", I'd give it to Pikmin. Pikmin 2 is a fucking timeless classic, imho.

If Katamari Damacy 2 ends up great, I might give it to this... just because it completely reinvigorated the idea of simplicity over complexity without the normal strings that are attached to such a claim. I don't know exactly if we'd call it a "franchise" yet, but I'll wait and see to KD2 comes out...

Halo is another one I'd have to add into the most improved category. I really despised Halo 1. But Halo 2... I like it a lot. Obviously this game had a significant impact on this generation, so in terms of importance I might give it to the Halo games. But I don't think that overall they're the #1 new franchise in terms of quality.

I wish Grand Theft Auto was a new franchise this generation, because the 3D games really brought a lot of awesome concepts to the genre and absolutely redefined the notion of free form gameplay. Unfortunately, it's not a new franchise... no matter how different the 3D games are from the 2D games. Sorry, San Andreas.

Kingdom Hearts is a game I'd like to nominate, because I just see so much incredible potential in that series. But I don't know if I could give it to KH in good faith, just because the first had some major problems (gummi blocks, some camera issues, etc...). But maybe, like Pikmin 2, Kingdom Hearts 2 will improve on the first on every way.

Wario Ware is definitely another one. It is, by far, the most brilliant, most original title this generation... and it defines the perfect handheld gaming experience. I'm so tempted to give it to this one, but I don't know if we'd include GBA games in the 128 bit generation...

There's a lot...but...eh...I'll choose later.

Wario Ware.

This year? How can you develop a franchise in a year? I guess if it becomes a franchise, Katamari Damacy... or Monster Hunter.

I agree completely, it's so awesome, I get a feeling when playing Pikmin that no other game has given me. Pikmin 2 is now one of my favourite games of all time, it's got so much new content it's almost liked they skipped Pikmin 2 and gave us Pikmin 3. However, the original one still remains unique thanks to the 30 day time limit, it gives you a sense of urgency and you really feel bad when one of your Pikmin die unlike in Pikmin 2 where you can just produce a ton more. Best new franchise this gen? I'd say so. Does Advance Wars count as a new franchise? Actually even if it does i'd still go with Pikmin.

Technically, isn't KOTOR a series in the Star Wars franchise?

Like Blood Omen and Soul Reaver are series in the Legacy of Kain franchise.

Shameful. How can you forget? Your official Ico fandom has been renounced.

*rips off patch*

I'm sorry! In my zeal to post overlong descriptions about new franchises I like, I forgot the best one!

Don't renounce my fandom! I'll buy three copies of WANDA and COLOSSUS when it comes out!

Animal Crossing and Pikmin.
AC has potential to be great, I just hope they make the next game a little less flat of an experience.

Give me one and it will be officially unrenounced.

You're talking to the wrong guy. AC is my favorite game ever. Absolutely brilliant. It and Morrowind took up nearly all of my game-playing moments in 2002.

I don't know if I'd really call ICO a franchise... as Wanda isn't really a direct sequel to it.

I'd go with Wario Ware or Shadow Hearts, myself... Or Metroid Prime, if you can count it as a "new" franchise.

Hmmm this week? What new franchise did even come out this week? For this gen Wario Ware GBA gets another vote from me! When i first heard what it's all about and then saw the scores i thought wtf is going on here? That game appears to be a collection of crap and gets 90% scores!

When i first played it ... it was like magic. Who would've thought?

Yeah, AC owned my life for about one week. Then I never cared again, because the experience just wasn't rewarding enough to me. That's what they need to think about for any sequels...

I argued with Speevy for like eighteen pages about Animal Crossing. It's a lost cause, my boy!

Best new franchises this Gen?

Halo
Viewtiful Joe
Burnout
Max Payne
Wario Ware
Fatal Frame
Otogi
Onimusha
Advance Wars

Calling Advance Wars a new franchise is like calling Fire Emblem a new franchise.

Something I would love to see in animal crossing is sporting teams, you can pick different sports in winter and summer and every Saturday or Sunday you’re team will have a game against a team from another town.
