What is up with Europe's low age of consent for sex?

Source on that?

It's still 16. It was only raised from 14 around 2008.

Oh, my bad. So we did adjust it, but in my mind I confused the current age it was changed to as the one we were changing from.

I'm old so 2008 feels like "recently" to me.

14. That was actually pretty damn young. :P

Does that mean I, a 30-something adult, can have relations with a 16 year old in any of the green states on that map? (Not that I'd want to for various reasons)

I remember when I was in high school one of my friends fucked a guy who was in his 40s when she was 17 and eventually got him arrested for it. This was in Ohio, for what it's worth.

How did she get him arrested if the age is 16?

People can have sex when they considere they are prepared to have it. You and the rest of the world are no one to tell anyone what can or can't do.

I don't think it should be a crime for two fifteen-year-olds to have sex, I just think that it's usually a really bad idea.

Well, a bad idea in your world right?

Not everyone is the same person, i think when people think they are prepared, they should do it.

But as i said is their decision, not us, plus people have the right to make mistakes and learn, i think we all did :)

I'm not really a fan of this reasoning. Can you explain how a 50 year old having sex with a 16 year old is more harmful than a 24 year old having sex with a 16 year old? The only reasoning I can see is "gross", which really shouldn't be the basis for laws.

I am in favor of "romeo and juliet" laws, which can be applied either when one half of a couple goes over the age of consent or when both are minors (there should definitely be room for leniency in these cases). I'm not in favor of treating adults differently based on their age though. If a 50 year old shouldn't be having sex with a 16 year old, then a 24 year old shouldn't be either.

I think the larger the age gap, the harder it is for people to relate to one another or have similar interests and as a result larger age gaps are more likely to have ulterior motives during sex, e.g. older people manipulating teenagers into things they don't fully understand or more rare cases of scummy teens manipulating older people through sex to get stuff they want - "sugar daddies," etc.

I don't think there's any one perfect way to do it, but I think keeping the age of consent a little higher instead of a little lower is the safer, more preferable option. No matter how "experienced kids are these days" or how "early they start," that doesn't mean it's a good thing or that they even fully understanding what they're doing with / to people.

Canada actually raised it from 16 to 18 recently.

I don't really like my permissions being taken away, but you pretty quickly get to a point in your 20s that dating anyone under 18 would be insane anyway.

You mean your 30 year old friend cheating on his girlfriend with a 17 year old girl who acts like a 12 year old and doesn't look much old.... is insane?

we just don't think that sex is that harmful in general, probably. it's much more present in society, media, ads etc. as far a I know we also have more and earlier sex education.
on the other side, guns are less present

It's not weird when 15 year old kids want to discover sexuality.
It becomes creepy when older people look at that age and think: how young can i fuck them without going to jail.

Sorry I'm just messing around. I'm not married and live with my girlfriend for 4 years. I actually think waiting for marriage to have sex is a bad idea.

Good, i know you were trolling
(i hoped that) :D
