I ain't got nothing about their visual and style. Think it's kind of nice actually.

But the attitude...WTF is wrong with their attitude?!?! They hate EVERYTHING and whine about ANYTHING.

It's like having a hot chick naked in bed but instead of jumping right in just stand looking at her and slapping her in the face because its YOUR bed not hers. What!!!

Anyway, would like to understand the difference between emo and gothic. Maybe musical preferences?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth_subculture#Ideology

Completely different.
Most Emos here are between 13 and 16, whereas Gothics tend to be far older.

I thought hating on Emo was cooler when it was underground. Now everybody is doing it, it's so lame.

In 2008, Time Magazine reported that "anti-emo" groups attacked teenagers in Mexico City, Querétaro, and Tijuana.

See, this is bullshit. I don't really like emos, i think they should stop whining and crying and start working on building up a life, but why attack them?

Yeah, I was hating emo kids back in 1998. it was MUCh cooler when no one knew they existed.

I'll admit i was on that punk rock/ska bacdwagon back then though and bitched when certain bands got popular. I really only complained if they got popular, then completely changed their sound though. If they got big, I didn't care, but if they got big and then took it a step further and changed the music to fit what they thought even more of the population wanted I didn't like that.

Can't really blame the band, i'd prolly do it too, but it sucked to like a band, watch em get big and then not be that band anymore. Then if a "new fan" saw I liked the same band, they thought we had something in common when in reality they were two totally different bands.

I still listen to mostly what I did 10 to 15 years ago though.

there is only one reason why i dont like it if a band becomes big,
the concerts become more expensive and crowded!
(but i rather have my fav. band earn money and do more albums- so i gladly spend more money and fight with the crowd)

three years ago there where 15 people at an opeth gig, last year there where hundreds of fans ... was a lot more fun when mikael talked to the few of us...was very cool

well at least they are right about lowlands being awesome.

But yeah. Emo is just unpopular people starting a crowd really. Pretending like you don't care means that people might not notice that if you did care you wouldn't be allowed to fit in anyway.

Opeth is still pretty underground in the US. They're basically at the peak of success a band like them can obtain before breaking mainstream. Though I imagine opening for Dream Theater got them a bit more popularity.
On the other hand, I would have loved to actually have people show up for Therion shows so they would tour here again. I was amazed they came back the 2nd time but unfortunately couldn't make it to any of the shows. And now they've pretty much announced that there's no way they're coming back to the US where as after the first show it was only hinted at by conversations with the band after going to a show with 11 other people in attendance. I'm just hoping the Progpower promoter is able to get them back here for a one off show. Though I'm likely going to go to Europe at some point in time to see their real stage show.
Then of course, there's Green Carnation that no longer tours at all because of their US experience and getting cheated by the promoter to the point where they lost a ton of money.

I'll admit that it is dissapointing/angry to see people talk like this. A lot of my friends are like this (not emo but.. scene I guess?). We're still friends, who cares. 90% of people are like this when they're younger, not just these "emo's". Hell I used to be like this back in high school but then you grow up and realize how musically ignorant you're being. Realize all the amazing things you're missing out on there. :D

:lol Yep

Seriously, I see these fuckers in their ridiculous outfits. I just want to punch their faces in, and hopefully, rattle whatever is left in that head of theirs, back into to some sort of working order.

The big problem is they listen to shit and say its emotionally rough and meaningful but is pretty much Britney gos goth.
These fuckers need to listen to some Cure or Joy division.

They can be annoying when they've flocked together in large groups, but that applies to the rest of society, too.

I'm just envious of how skinny the guys all are.

Not me. I don't want to be no scrawny, bony ass punk bitch. I could break most of them in half. :lol

i hate how these days musical genres have to have a type of fan or a dress code to identify them. Why must you wear disgusting clothes and act like a spoiled brat to show you like a type of music?
I pray for the day when a person wears preppy clothes, likes goth music and isnt shot down for not being/dressing like the 'proper fan'.

That's the nice thing about dance music... we (aside from a few minimal fans who are only into that genre b/c it's 'trendy') don't really have a set style - you'll see regular looking American Eagle types, candy ravers, guidos, douchebag looking people, hipsters, backpackers, you name it, at a festival.

Yeah no shit. I guess I can just take my noise tapes and fucking ham sandwiches in another room. They weren't so skinny when they were listening to the Promise Ring or Ten Grand I can tell you that.

God, where is that "Would you date a female who used to be a dude" thread for I want to make a wishlist?

I've always thought there was something really silly about adults who participated in counter-cultures. I think it's awfully ironic that they evangelise individuality and being different, yet all of them are the same.

Anyone who thinks a band becoming famous and making more money to feed themselves is "selling out" is stupid, not just emo kids.

And yes, I hate emo everything. Especially the fucking music. It's just really shitty and whiny.

The fact that they evangelise anything, doesn't matter what the idea or object, already makes them conformist because there is a group.

And none of them can stand each other. :lol

Most people (GAF included) don't even really know what emo is, or at least how it started. There was some thread where pictures of "emo" girls were posted, trying to gauge their fuckability, but they were more scenesters than anything. People throw around emo reeeeeeeally loosely.

at least we can agree that the whole movement is pretty worthless

I would like to know all there is to know about "emo".

wiki up 'revolution summer'.

emo used to be soley a contraction of emotional hardcore, a genre you will likely never have heard of a single band from. that was all well and good until mtv got ahold of it and started applying it to particularly self indulgent pop-punk bands.

"the term is so fundamentally oblique that it's meaningless. it used to mean something, now it just means music i don't like, but those myspace kids do"

I imagine Wikipedia would tell you. But basically, the genre started as an offshoot of hardcore punk that was a bit more melodic. It was much heavier than anything that's called "emo" now. The elaborate fashion wasn't always a part of it because emo bands would play shows with hardcore bands, and the audience had to wear clothes comfortable enough to mosh in.

Emo is a bit of an overly diluted terms now.

Emo mosh pits, however, are amongst the most hilarious (and sad) things I've ever seen on a concert floor.

Once again, I agree with ghst.

This thread title bothers me.
When describing people emo is an adjective and should never be a noun. There is also the whole possessive/plural thing.

Gaf should never discuss emo kids.

I like Goths a load more. Sure, lesser of two evils, but goth was never so effing mainstream.

Goths also had better, not to mention more varied, taste in music. Actually, Goths were cool for a lot of reasons, they're only somewhat compared to "emo kids" nowadays because they both project the whole dark and sullen image.

They're starting to fade away in my parts. The few emos that do remain are so emo-fied that they are self parodies. One of my roommates was an emo for a while and he now laughs at how stupid he was. Even my sister has begun to de-emofy herself. Unfortunately, the trend of long, stupid, and shaggy hair remains but it is rare to see a guy wear girl pants and eyeliner these days.

Much like the anti-hipster threads that seem to appear on Gaf from time to time, the OP once again proves a simple fact. However annoying emo-kids are, they aren't half as bad as someone who feels the need to make a thread pointing out that, yes, shitty subculture is shitty.
