Goths also had better, not to mention more varied, taste in music. Actually, Goths were cool for a lot of reasons, they're only somewhat compared to "emo kids" nowadays because they both project the whole dark and sullen image.

My understanding is, Goth is more about being 'serious' than being depressed. Also, Goth is bleak because it fixates on all the bad in the world, social justice etc. Emo just focuses on oneself and how unfair their own life is.

Actually (and this is based on my own experiences), the goth kids that I knew were largely nerdy, enjoyed a smorgasbord of music selection, and are typically well-read. They were all serious but certainly had a pretty major sense of humor.

Some are successful, some not, some are still Goth, some not, some even killed themselves, regrettably.

There isn't so much bitching with Goths though, if we're talking about stereotypical views.

I would like to know all there is to know about "emo".

It's really just irritating how "emo" gets thrown around so much, at least to me. REAL emo started with Sunny Day Real Estate and Neutral Milk Hotel, but nowadays anyone who is 13 and/or shops at Hot Topic is considered emo. I just really hate it when people say "lol ur so emo" because I wear thick-framed glasses and have tattoos and piercings :\

you don't have to "be emo" to be influenced. it's also a weird thing to hate other people's perception of you, especially if you have an image that's (through whatever false presumptions) tied to a very distinct and fashionable trend. infact, it's entirely to be expected.

I hate when people throw around emo. Furthermore,

There was an Emo kid who came up to me at the mall once, saying I dress nice or something. (I can't stand cargo or jean shorts, so I wear those Tripp shorts or whatever. They're just REALLY comfy, taking off all the fucking retarded chains that is.)

Anyways, I just tore the kid apart mentally/psychologically, he literally ran away crying. Fucking loser.

Oh, and I hate labels like "Emo, Goth, Punk, etc." If I wanted to be labeled, I would go into a supermarket wearing a soup can costume.

Yes, Hot Topic is my favorite store and Mindless Self Indulgence is my favorite band.

you have tattoos, piercings and thick frame glasses and you are into (decent) mid 90's emo.

i'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, just be careful throwing around your accusations. i barely know a single person involved in punk or it's billion splinter genres that isn't in some way stylistically influenced by it.

I'm actually more into stuff like Fall of Troy and Mars Volta, but plz general moar. What I was getting at is the idea of emo has become so mainstream that instead of being associated with argyle sweaters it's more associated with black eyeliner and Pete Wentz. That is what I don't like.

i've always found fot to be a poor mans hot cross/off minor. you should probably check both of them out.

and if you like sweeping, epic stuff with symphonic/progressive leanings (mars volta?) check out circle takes the square or city of caterpillar

Noted! I know about Circle Takes The Square, I actually saw them open for Thursday back in May, and I'm going to see Mars Volta on the 21st :D

I've come to just ignore them usually. I will admit, though, some of these kids come up with the most interesting means of dress. 'specially the girls. Jesus christ, makes me wish I was back in high school.

Get over a prejudice use of a word that's incredibly offensive to a decent portion of GAFers, as well as all of humanity? No.

And what's "wrong" with emos is the same shit wrong with metalheads, indie kids, GAFers, video gamers, punks, gangstas, etc.

Oh fuckin hell, get over it and yourself.

Emo died in the mid 1990s, ask Ian MacKaye.

All this pop punk bull shit is just shit.

Yeah I enjoyed "real" emo back in the day, Jawbox, Texas is the Reason, Shudder to Think. This new crap is just a hybrid of pop-punk and goth, and has nothing to do with what the genre originally was.

I'm not even bothering with that gospel anymore. I recall people referring to Lost Prophets as 'post-hardcore', I died a little inside.

So what you're saying is that you don't like something now that it's become popular?

I had a similar experience with the Goths that I went to high school with— they were pretty friendly, and were only really pigeon-holed by their unfortunate taste in clothing.

Emo kids have got to be taking the piss, though. If I were the parents to one of those self-indulgent little shits they would be disowned the second black hair dye entered the house. Pretty much every single one of them worships that shitter of a band AFI, which is disappointing considering they're apparently the new Goths (who, like has been said before, enjoyed a considerably wider palette).
People shouldn't give them any credit by sticking up for them against generalizations; their whole ethos consists of sulking, and idolizing shit. It's just a whole subculture that has formed from the worst parts of other subcultures, it has nothing new and thrives on mediocrity in ever facet. Fuck these kids.

very little, really.
what you saw, with that group, was just a bunch of stupid teenagers being dumb, you're assuming that's an 'emo' trait because of how they dress probably.
I had an 'emo' friend, being depressed/cutting yourself/ being moody/ being a twat was nothing like her personality, or her other 'emo' friends. They were friendly/funny, so saying 'what's up with X STEREOTYPE' is pretty silly because it's usually not accurate.
Same goes for goths.

ps. i get called 'emo' because of how i look, yet i'm nothing like that ignorant/moody stereotype, nor do i where clothes like that, or listen to that music - it's all about the image, nothing more when labeling someone.
