I edited my post.
When you have your head down and walking past people who are out to mug someone, you are essentially waving a wad of cash in-front of them when you pull out your phone and iPod.
As a person that has a carry conceal permit, this is not always the best answer.
There are a few reasons.
1. He lives in Canada and chances are slim he will get a carry permit.
2. If the assailants get within 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) the weapon becomes useless.
3. The hardest part of carrying a firearm is to known when to use it. When you do use it, it's only for one purpose. From what it sounds like they aren't armed so that would invalidate any reason to use the weapon.
I'd look into something like Krav Maga or some form of martial arts, and change your travel route.

Typically lowlifes look for what they deem are easy targets. Since you are small you unfortunately qualify in this category. Not trying to be mean or anything, just the reality of the situation.
Since I took on my current job last year, working in a scummy area, I've learnt the following:
- The majority of the general public are disgusting, stinking scumbags.
- The majority of the general public do not give a shit about anyone apart from themselves.
- It is not worth my time or effort to get involved with any of them. Just be polite and get them away as quickly as possible.
From working in the retail job I have now, I've turned into a complete and utter cynical bastard. I hate everyone.

Sounds like you are being deliberately targeted. I've walked home alone late at night countless times in not so great parts of Ontario cities (West End Windsor, Kipps Lane area of London, etc) while I was a student. Other than having an egg thrown at me from a passing car, and a few drunks yell in my general direction, nothing happened. I only know a couple people who have actually been mugged, and I can't think of anybody I know who has been mugged more than once. At least in Canada. My dad was mugged a few times in Detroit back in the 70s.
Knowing the northern part of the York Region, I would guess that you are either not white (tons of racist assholes up that way) or they recognize you from your job at Goodwill.
