What is wrong with Stella Deus?

I'm playing it cuz I figured I would play with some of these dusty games, but what is wrong with it? I guess you guys hyped it up and was like wakka wakka wakka but then suddenly you guys are like what what what what what?

Because I'm playing it, and I guess it's not BAD, it's just like, really plain? Nothing really goes [wow]. Isn't this supposed to be like Hoshigami? Because of the whole Catacombs of Trials thing?

So should I even bother continuing this or should I just ditch it on the island of misfit games? Cmon help a dode out here

Did anyone even finish this

It's freakin Atlus I expect some replies, cmon now

Shallow, pointless combat. Played it for about 10-15 hours, my brother for about 30, and the gameplay never progressed or evolved.

Ridiculously stupid, easily exploitable enemy AI.

Crap story/characters/world/scenarios. Boring, generic maps. Lots of level grinding required.

you forgot the fucking atrocious VA that made cut off my ears Reservoir Dogs style.

For me it was mainly the level grinding. I got to some point towards the end where I needed to level up pretty bad. So I'm doing the tower (?) or whatever it is, and you fight the EXACT same enemies, just at a higher level. Unbelievably tedious and stupid. I honestly just couldn't do it anymore, I was bored to tears. And the gameplay itself is pretty meh, as is the story. The game looks pretty and has a good soundtrack, that's about it. I don't think I've ever forced myself to trudge through a game like I did with that one.

Ok ok ok

Let's play a game

Shag Marry Kill

Three games I haven't played yet (except Stella Deus sorta)

Stella Deus
Growlanser Generations
Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits

Shag Marry Kill

GO

Those are some awful choices.

Stella Deus: MARRY
Growlanser Generations: SHAG
Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits: KILL

And lemme remind you I think Stella Deus is pretty boring.

I really wanted to like it but honestly, the character design is the only worthwhile aspect of the entire project. I stopped playing 10 hours into it, wishing A) I hadn't wasted the time or cash and B) I could've transplanted all of the art assets to a good game. Is there a decent used market for this thing?

See Mejilan's point except put about 20 times the venom into the post.

For real. The WORST part of the game is that hours 30, 40, 50, and everything before/after/in-between play EXACTLY as hour 1. Stella Deus is the very definition of stagnant gameplay that fails to change or evolve in any significant capacity.

It isn't even remotely fun as a grinding game either, since the only number that actually matters is "level".

I bought Arc TotS when it came out. Pity me.

"IS THIS EDIBLE?" Christ was the dialogue, art, and everything else in that game irritating.

Ok, so Stella Deus is poop

I can deal with that

But I gotta try out Arc the Lad before I pass judgment

It's the law

if demi didn't like Fire Emblem because of its story, then i doubt he'll dig Suikoden Tactics, which has an incredibly shitty story (but decent gameplay).

GG is very ugly, has a dumb story, has no real meaningful character upgrades, and -- did I mention that it's really REALLY ugly?

Arc the Lad has boring graphics, annoying characters, no real meaningful character upgrades, and is just really dumb.

Did that help?

Fire Emblem had such a broken story

Literally

It was like

Hey there's this evil god, we should stop it

Then it's like, yay we beat the bad guy... [fin]

I mean, why bother introducing this evil god when you don't even bother with it

Could have avoided it period and had the same result

boggle boggle

OH CMON why is GG poop

WHY IS ARC POOP

I paid 10 bux for these you know

Arc TotS = same problems as Stella Deus but a less offensive story and just as simple gameplay but not as broken.

I love GG myself but they are the worst two games in the series with Growlanser 1 and 4 being like a bajillion times better. OH and Drinky probably doesn't like it much because it doesn't have big character upgrades and etc.

NO

I want to play Shag Marry Kill is all

Well, it's true -- if there's no real ability to upgrade and develop your characters, you'd better have DAMN tight scenario design ala Fire Emblem. GG doesn't, although the AI is pretty solid.

Really, though, I think GG's biggest strike is just how ugly the maps are and how bad the animation/effects seem to be.

Ok ok ok I got it

Shag Marry Kill

All of these are sealed because I'm gay

Disgaea
La Pucelle
Phantom Brave

Shag Marry Kill

dont let me down!

Hey, I didn't say it wasn't true. I'm just saying that upgrade/development systems are really your bag.

As for FE, I've find the the scenario design in the game to be a bit too stiff for me. There's usually very specific ways to approach a map or battle in most cases and very little deviation to it. While GLII/IIIs scenarios aren't anything great most of the time, I really like how you can approach each map multiple ways and use different strategies in battle to achieve your goals in most cases. Only some of the maps are designed very strictly so that you need to do it a specific way to beat it.

FE PoR seems like it was set up to be part of a larger story. Sequel.

I have Stella Deus as well, (Bought it last summer, not even opened it yet.) Does it at least have good music? I had heard that Hitoshi Sakimoto of Vagrant Story/FFT/Ogre Battle musical fame was involved?

If he was, then maybe the music is at least tolerable?

Shag stella deus, its purdy but you dont wanna get stuck with it.

Kill Arc the lad, its awful

Marry Growlanser, sounds like you hate level grinding, which is good, cuz you dont have to do any of that, the game is pure strategy, you can gain the required levels simply by playing through the game at a normal pace without trying to level.

What's wrong with Stella Deus:
-Ambiguously gay hero.
-Lame story...
-...which is told crappily, to boot.
-A number of pointless, "do nothing" quests.
-Voice acting to commit suicide over.
-Shitty, repetitive music.
-Battles are set up in a way that makes them take way the hell too long.

Playing Arc the Lad

Seems at least better than Stella Deus

But the voices are still laughable

I'll give it a bit more

*Stares at Meijilan* Sorry dude... I'm still bitter about your recommendation :P

Although I can't totally blame you. The game was good...for about the first 3 hours. Until you realise that this game follows the same boring pattern over and over again. Play 1/2 stages of story mode--> Level up in extremely boring looking dungeon --> Repeat till end of game. Of course, I gave up after about 10 hours or so.

The only thing that this game has going for it is it's Sountrack...which pretty much rocks.

I know! The first 3 hours really WERE great. I'm sorry, sorry, sorry! I've bitten my tongue over and over again over the memory of the positive, preliminary postings I made... :/

Ok so why is Arc the Lad so bad? I'm certainly enjoying it much more than Stella Deus...

Does it just get suddenly awful over time?

You are talking about the first one (offline) right? Well, I actually enjoyed the game quite a fair bit contary to the mostly negative reviews that it has received. Despite it's mediocre graphics/ music and ho-hum plot, I managed to persevere to the very end. Could be because it came out during the RPG drought (End 2003 if i'm right) It certainly is better than Stella Dues that's for sure.

If you are talking about the online one that was recently released, then ignore the above :)

Shag Disgaea.
Marry Disgaea.

Kill... but still, is it alright for you to be doing this? The GAFfers all say that bad SRPGs are evil, but are they really? It doesn't seem fair to judge somebody based on review scores alone. Even if it's Drinky's orders, I don't feel right assassinating a game I haven't played... Does that mean it's alright to assassinate a game I HAVE played? That seems wrong, too. Can't kill Arc the Lad... Hmmmm, can't kill Disgaea either... which means... ohhhh...

Well the thing is, those three games (Disgaea etc) focus a lot on level grinding and micromanagement and such, and I really am not into that...

Like, Final Fantasy Tactics is a nice one (which most can agree on)

I like Fire Emblem (GBA anyway)

Stella Deus is FINE, but its just so vanilla...I prefer chocolate (take that how you see it)

Arc the Lad right now seems just about even, it doesn't seem too difficult, too "advanced" etc

Of course I'm not basing solely on gaffers remarks

I mean, hello

Buy Advent Rising, GOTY 2005

Disgaea requires about as much level grinding and micromanagement as you want. You can make it through the game's basic story with little to no level grinding. Or you can grind as obscenely as you want. The choice is yours.

Twilight of the Spirits was pretty decent but the whole endgame stuff was just plain goofy. I missed the whole dungeons from ATL2 though. ATL2 is still far and away best Arc game if you ask me - long, challenging, lots to do, nice story, quick S-RPG battles.

My little brother beat Ninja Gaiden Black on Master Ninja mode two days ago. He has done everything in DMC3. He has finished Dynasty Warriors 5. And he loves Disgaea...

Take that how you will.
