What is your favorite Multiplayer game of all time?

Unreal tournament instagib, back when multiplayer was more fun and friendlier. I remember joining a match with a bunch of guys that played together and getting my ass handed to me, like they were all in the 30s for kills in a first to 40 match and I had 3. There was a bit of piss taking, like a few seconds, and then "don't worry, we'll show you some things to help you get better" and then they spent the next hour or so giving me a tutorial. In our final match I still lost badly but ended up with 15 or so kills and did much better in matches after that. Also there were official Asia Carrera skins and maps. Good times.

If you count MMOs then it's FFXI without any hesitation. If not, it's probably Battlefield 4. I like Apex Legends as well and still play it and maybe it could be my favorite but Respawn and EA mess it up too much.

Hard to name a favorite game. Here are some top picks of mine:

I don't play PvP as much as I used to anymore, but in today's age when a co-op game nails it's gameplay loop you really get something special.

Diablo 2 and Neverwinter Nigths.
Specifically Nwn because I've been on a full custom role play server for many years. Good old days.

Goldeneye
Also, playing left for dead on expert I made friends that I still talk to online for over 14 years. To beat the game on expert you cannot play selfishly, so that helped all of us bond and become really good friends.

What a tough question. I can't whittle it down really.

Local multiplayer;

Mario Kart 64 - I used to play this all the time with my brother when we were both under the age of 10.

PES 6 - again, I used to sneak in my brother's room and we'd do all nighters playing this game. This game used to have hilarious modifiers like every player is in an ostrich outfit. You also had absolute OP gods like Adriano, Ronaldinho and Henry.

Online multiplayer;

Gears of War - 360 plus Gears of War. First HD console, first truly online console we had. This game is GOAT tier. Not only was the gameplay superb but the community was hilarious. Shit talking, getting on the wall and tea bagging, turkey noises down the mic, Jedi backflip and skydive glitching, gnasher dominating host advantage madness.

Halo 3 - how do you follow up Gears of War? With the greatest FPS of all time (IMO). Traffic cone splatting, throwing stickies a mile in the air and it landing on someone's head, hip firing snipers - this game had it all. Lunacy. Custom games like zombies and duck hunt, racing around on mongooses. Bungie hit it out of the park.

Modern Warfare 2 - just another absolutely perfect game that improved upon the first MW in every way.

Rocket League - really fun game that has stood the test of time (10 years at this point).

Honorary mention;

Mario Kart DS - I think I played this before Gears of War. I showed my brother that we could connect to WiFi and play with other people, it blew our minds.

Probably Minna No Golf 4 on the PS2. A friend imported the Japanese version because the western localization in Hot Shots Golf Fore! was omega cringe.
We put in several 100s of hours in it. Good times.

I really get confused how people can't look back objectively and pick just one stand out title.

This was it for me, fantastic movement and gunplay and excellent multi crew vehicles and the ability to customise yourself into a specific role. The fact it was up to 128 players (64 v 64) during the age of dial up with actual projectile weapons with travel time and no lag... nothing else quite like it.

Starsiege Tribes

Best there will ever be

Was the first MP only release in history. Had a netcode where you could play >32 players on a 56k modem. The class systems and equipment to load to protect bases and setup turrets and mines etc , way ahead of its time

My fondest memories come from...

Quake 2
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast / Jedi Academy
Battlefield 1942 / Vietnam / 2 / 2142
Warhawk
Resistance: Fall of Man
Team Fortress Classic / 2
Star Wars Battlefront 1/2
Alien Vs Predator 1/2
Unreal Tournament 99/2003/2004
Chivalry 1/2
Halo 3/Reach
COD 1/2/MW/BLOPS 1/BLOPS 2

Could be more but that's what immediately comes to mind.

UMK3 in Genesis
Rocket league pre FTP Ps4
GoW asenssion Ps3
Quake 3 arena Dreamcast
Unreal 99 PC
Counter Strike

I made good friends in Killzone 2 and Destiny. Killzone 2's clan system and Destiny's amazing teamwork based raids were so fucking great.

I would say my favourite is Gears 1. I was obsessed with it. It was released on PC in 2008 I think and I played the crap out of it.

Bronze, Silver and Gold
Goldeneye
Street Fighter 2

Online:

RFOM 2

I don't tend to play multiplayer games much nowadays. Maybe a bit of Mario Kart on the Switch with the fam and GT7 on the odd occasion.

World of Warcraft. I haven't actually played many online multiplayer titles. FPS isn't normally my go-to genre, but I did enjoy the multiplayer in both Killzone 2 and Bioshock 2.

2 categories, fun laughing and fun playing.

Fun laughing: gang beasts.
Good. Lord. Even just thinking about it now makes my lungs swell and my sides spontaneously combust. The amounts of laughter gained in ratio to how much is happening is astounding. The controls being absolute ass so even "good" players struggle, and the variety of possibilities every time keeps it so funny. Dang..

Fun playing: black ops zombies.
This is probably a more subjective pick as I always played with good friends. But the fun in zombies is pretty great, lots of variety with levels, and always looking forward to what shenanigans will be lollygagged.

Thank you.

Never liked playing with randos online too much, so my favorites end up being those that I could play in LAN parties.

Perfect Dark. Loved playing with my bro or just with bots. Super fun, and back then it seemed like the most content-rich game ever to me.
Mario Kart, specially the one on Wii. We even downloaded a pack with 300 courses or some shit like that, played it for hours on end.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Played lots of hotseat games back in college.
Warcraft III. Custom maps up the ass in college.
Left 4 Dead 2. Lot's of campaigns played through the years with different groups of people.
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. The one exception, couldn't stop playing this the summer it came out on the Switch and had a lot of fun with the multiplayer.

Probably Halo 2. It was just an incredible multiplayer game and the online was revolutionary for console games. In fact I think it kick started matchmaking.
