Man, missed this, but props for mentioning Bahamadia. Never heard of some of the others you mentioned.

How about MC Lyte?

MC Lyte used to be in my top 5 back in 2012, but after finding other artists I seemed to forget about her. I'm not sure about putting her in that tenth spot though.

I assume you probably don't recognize Akua Naru and Rapsody from my list. Akua is a jazz rap artist and you can't go wrong with any of the three albums she released as a starting point and for Rapsody I'd suggest The Idea of Beautiful to start with.

Personally my top solo acts would be something like:

Q-Tip
Nas
Mos Def
Talib Kwali
Father Metro (Finnish rapper of the band Don Johnson Big Band)
Black Thought
Watsky
Shing02
Snoop Dogg
Common

If groups are ok, the list would be something like this:
A Tribe Called Quest
Beastie Boys
Nas
De La Soul
Black star
Gang Starr
Pharcyde
Black Thought
NWA
Mobb Deep

Nas
BIG
Pac
Jay-Z
Kanye
DMX
Jadakiss
Camron
3 Stacks
Rakim

If duos/groups are allowed, I'll add Clipse, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang Clan, Gang Starr. Honorable mention to Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Blu & Exile, Busta Rhymes, Black Star (and Talib Kweli), Run the Jewels, Danny Brown, Method Man, Redman and Lauren Hill.

3. Andre 3000
4. YG
5. Ma$e

10. Kool A.D.

Rich Chigga
Heems
Ya Boy Bangs

Bladee
Fat Joe
Corey Feldman
Fat Nick
Kendrick Lamar

this is the high water mark for the most absurd list in the thread. throwing Iggy Azalea and Hopsin on ur list will no longer cut it

In no particular order, except for MF DOOM who is number 1 no doubt... a weird thing about this list is that 93 til infinity & Bizarre ride 2 the pharcyde are 2 of my favorite albums of all time, yet I can't really say that Souls & Pharcyde members belong in a top 10 rappers (although Opio from Souls is dope).

1. MF DOOM
2. Nas
3. Mos Def
4. Ghostface Killah
5. Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
6. Q-Tip

HOLD ON A SEC....

Bahamadia and Akua Naru ( She is awesome, we used to rock out back in the day) on a list from somebody with a Jill Scott avatar? You had to either hang out at the 5Spot or be from somewhere close. That is some regional hip hop...and a Rapsody sighting? Lemme find out you a emcee on the lo-key.

You can tell a lot about a person from there choice of fave rappers.

I actually just wrote a little bit of stuff when I was in middle school and during 2013. Never tried to do it seriously. I'm not from the 5Spot, actually from NC.

Favorite rappers of all time? That I can list. My list is going to be pretty awful so bear with me.

3. Earl Sweatshirt
4. Daveed Diggs
5. Vince Staples
6. Pusha T
7. Lil Ugly Mane
8. Danny Brown
9. Captain Murphy
10. Outkast

Some of the artists you mentioned on your list, I should try and check out. High-five for Jean Grae, too.

I can never do these list because a lot of the hip-hop acts I like are groups rather than solo artists.

Anyway

Nas is my favorite all time.

Followed by in no particular order:

Pete Rock & CL Smooth
GangStarr
Public Enemy
Wu-Tang (prefer Ghost and Raekwon's solo efforts)
Mobb Deep
Jay Z
J. Cole
Kendrick Lamar
Comeback Season - Take Care Drake (his unreleased material during the Take Care era got me through some times, shame he fell fuck off after absorbing Quentin Millers life force)

And my favorite artist today: Future.

I remember Rapsody for her verse on TPAB, which was one of the best verses on that album. I keep forgetting she has an album and I should check it out sometime. Akua sounds like something up my alley, and her Google return made a good case for her music.

Ooh, Nas is your favorite too? I thought you were good people.

Glad that you like her.

B.I.G.
Eminem
Black Thought
Melle Mel
2Pac
KRS-One
The Fresh Prince
Del tha Funkee Homosapien

I jumped in this thread expecting there to be zero mention of Kool Keith and readying my list with him at the top, but man, super pleasantly surprised to see that Dr Octagon was already adequately represented. With that knowledge I'm pumped to try out some of the other artists I'm unfamiliar with, thanks for the topic OP

The last 5 or so can be switched out with many others. Plenty of people like Earl, Open Mike Eagle, or Vince Staples could be up there if they keep it up

So have only been listening to rap since about 2008 but I'll throw a list out there, I like a lot more recent ones then i do the previous decade.

But here's mine:

1. J Cole
2. Kendrick
3. Drake
4. Kanye
(big drop off here for my rankings, not that they suck, but the top 4 is my Rushmore)
5. Childish Gambino
6. Lil Wayne
7. Chance the Rapper
8. Future
9. Wiz Khalifa
10. Vince Staples

Rap is probably somehwere around my 4th or 5th favorite genre.
RIP to Lil Wayne who would of been #1 easily by a mile
