what jrpg are you playing right now ?

All done with Golden Sun Dark Dawn! After DQ7 it sure was nice to go back to an rpg that actually gives ya shortcuts ta get around places/parts you've already done! On the downside the games random encounter rate is super ultra low! Like it was rare ta get thrust into a battle even once per room x.x

Now I'm down to like 4 more rpgs to finish my 52 rpg challenge? My selection is lookin' pretty slim so I gotta think over which I wanna do next! Meaning more vocation grinding in DQ9. Only got half of 'em to L99, gotta do the rest!

Moving steadily along in Suikoden 5, have nearly all of the characters and just got my final castle expansion. Though there are so many RTS battles lately (and like I said I hate that particular genre). And those dungeons with that encounter rate. Doraat, which had a ton of HP sink enemies that you couldn't run from, was the absolute worst. Though the forest path where you could barely see where you're going was up there too.

I acknowledge it does a lot of great things in between the shitty parts - fleshed-out recruiting sidequests, parts of the game where your decisions change a good deal of the storyline, a decent storyline and soundtrack.

Just exactly what do I play after Panzer Dragoon Saga...

Do I keep the Saturn chain going with something else like Dark Savior, Magic Knight Rayearth, or Dragon Force? Or maybe something more light hearted like Mario RPG or FF Mystic Quest.

I could always start on the Suikoden series or Shining Force...still havent played FF3 famicom version. Its cool to have a backlog of RPGs you've never played or havent played in awhile, but damn if indecisiveness doesnt hit.

I'm finishing up the Suikoden series right now, so you must start the cycle anew and start on that series. (Though Shining Force III is phenomenal if you're on the high-roller Saturn tip)

Well I managed to snag a disc only copy long ago, but the way i'm rolling with retro...i'm trying to play through large series in sequence. So say, I dont play Shining Force 3, until i've beaten Shining Force 1,2, and CD.

At any rate, i'll probably get started on Suikoden in that case.

Finished Tales of Zestiria last night. my ingame clock shows 42 hours, really enjoyed the title for the whole duration of that. Combat was fast and fun (admittedly I played the game entirely as Sorey and never switched to anyone else) even though I'm sure I was just button mashing for most of it lol.

Might go back to try some of the post game content and try and finish off collecting some of the orbs and stuff, but for now I'm sitting here wondering what game to play next.

Any good RPGs in similar vein available on PC/PS4? I know Berseria is out soon but I won't be buying that for a while.

I need some advice guys: in the last months i have replayed the Final Fantasy series from VI to XII on my old consoles and next to this i have taken a second run on Xenoblade and BG&E (i know that it isn't a JRPG). Now i don't know clearly what game to play/buy next.

FF VII was the most sastisfying of the series, his unique atmosphere has really catched me a lot, despite this is the 4th time that i play it.

I'm searching something for PS1/2/PC/Wii/3DS with something similar to the atmosphere/feeling of the abandoned and dark area of the midgar (with his beatiful collection of music).
Something with pre-rendered backgrounds would be perfect! :)

PS: i've tried Legend of Dragoon but it didn't catch me... too slow..

Try Xenogears I guess.

Some other names: Paraside Eve 1, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Anachronox, Shadow Hearts 1-2, Digital Devil Saga 1-2, Soul Hacker... Shin Megami Tensei games in general, except Persona 4.

Xenogears absolutely.

Vagrant Story and SMT: Nocturne are also must plays if you want a dark Midgar similar feeling atmosphere.

If you enjoyed it, I would recommend not doing the post-game stuff, the DLC chapter, or going for harder difficulty stuff. I really liked the game, but as soon as I started doing the post-game stuff and cranking up the difficulty, the flaws became extremely apparent and I ended up changing my opinion and not liking the game. Plus, the ending to the DLC is just insulting.

I haven't really touched much on the PS4 yet. I'm playing through Rogue Galaxy now, but it's pretty much just an emulated PS2 game. I have Valkyria Chronicles, Odin Sphere, Omega Quintet, Nights of Azure, Star Ocean, Atelier Sophie, and Megadimension Neptunia V-II in the PS4 backlog, plus a few more PS2 emulated titles. I'm waiting for Fairy Fencer F and Exist Archive to come down in price before picking those up, too.

Speaking of PS2 on PS4, I just recently finished playing Valkyrie Profile 2. I really wish they would do a PS4 version of that. The game looks so good, it deserves to be played at a higher resolution. It's doing effects I never really noticed on PS2 before: bloom, depth of field, environmental shadow maps, real-time reflections. It almost looks like a low-res PS3 game.

Thanx a lot Taruranto and Lothar!!

It's a lot of time that i think to try Xenogears but everytime i search some opinions i find someone complain about the fact that the game seems unfinished or that is slow and with a ugly combat system...

Maybe i have to try it for have an accurate and personal opinion!

Ready to retake Sol Falena and beat Suikoden V. I got all 108 stars, which I have done in every other Suikoden title so far.
Chose Euram instead of the mage girl, even though I did the latter's dungeon and fought the boss on another save slot

Lots enjoyable about it, some serious annoyances that could have been easily retooled (encounter rate), and some RTS battles that I didn't like at all but I eventually figured out how to succeed with them. Overall I enjoyed it.

Also started DQ Builders but didn't make it too far. Still in the first chapter, I found the ruined castle and went to go search for the former king on the roof, then fell down and died :P

I recently finished Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. I loved it, might be my GOTY so far, Bravely Second and it are neck and neck.

Currently bouncing between Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth. I'm loving both game, the latter is way better than I expected it would be.

I think I'm going to focus on Tokyo Mirage Sessions, I need to wrap up my Wii U games before the Switch comes out.

Glad I stuck with Suikoden II this time instead of stopping and restarting months later. Really picks up a few hours in.

well there is tales of symphonia pc

Got a confusing lil situation here.

Final clear game save file of Golden Sun: Dark Dawn says 19:50. However my 3DS activity log says 19:30. ???

Is the games timer faster than real time? Which one should I go with officially as my clear time o.o?

Also decided my next rpg will be Shining Soul. Which iirc is kinda rough around the edges but still fun enough for me to have beaten at least once before!

the 3ds activity log doesnt track ds games all that well, especially when you keep a ds game open for long periods of time

Ohh that stinks! I was relying on it being accurate since the other Golden Sun games have clocks that lag behind real time, so I had to track them manually. This one I figured the 3DS had my back on so I didn't jot down my sessions ;.; I got through it in like 4 days which could be prolly considered long.

In the middle of Tales of Xillia while playing Fire Emblem 4 and 9 on and off.

Xillia has been good for me (only prior experience was a bit of Vesperia before my 360 broke and 1 hour of Symphonia). Playing mostly as Jude with Alvin, Milla, and Rowen in rotation. Music has been ok, although hard to pick out when I'm focused elsewhere. For reference on progress, just met Muzet a while ago.

FE4 is entertaining me so far. At chapter 2, after recruiting Ayra, Jamke, Holyn and Raquesis. Just saw Sylvia, Lewyn and Beowolf. I feel bad for axe users (moreso for lance users when Lex with his Brave Axe rolls up).

FE9 has been exhausting when I'm actually playing. Animations are now off and movement sped up but I still want to sleep at times. I said once before, but I was doing push-ups during enemy phase to pass the time. At chapter 13 now.

I'm re-playing Dragon Quest IX. I found the cartridge laying around in my room and forgot how much I loved it. Started a new game and currently 15 hours into it!

Playing Kingdom Hearts HD. It's... not fun? Dunno, I find the camera and battle system not fun at all. Using magic or item is a bit of a hassle as you need to use the d-pad to choose it and it's a real time battle.

But I'm still very early so maybe the battle system will click as I progress through the game.

Finally finished SMT IV: Apocalypse. Outstanding game, way better than SMT IV, and that's something I didn't expect at all as I adored it.

Moving on to my yearly replay of Earthbound, this time on 3DS VC. Hopefully will be done before Pokemon SM is released, as it will get priority as soon as it does.

Also just beat TLoZ: Oracle of Seasons. Loved it just as much as when it released. Onto Oracle of Ages!

Shining Soul is good fun in short doses!

It'd have been even more fun if your Hero wasn't blind.

3 more rpgs ta go with 21 ta choose from! Or less since theres quite a few I 100% wouldn't choose to replay! An if I had the thread decide ya all would prolly pick the ones which'd make me suffer most lol.

There was a LTTP thread about Bravely Default, which made me rethink about buying Bravely Second. I passed on it at release because I was in the middle of Fire Emblem Conquest, and after I finished it I tried the demo - but the demo didn't light me on fire for the game like I hoped it would.

Fast forward to this weekend, I re downloaded the demo and started playing where I left off, and I enjoyed it! I think I made my next JRPG decision! Which is too bad because Dragon Quest VII is on its way here from GameFly, so I'll go ahead and give it a try- but I'm pretty certain Bravely Second is what I want. I LOVED the first game, but the music in the demo didn't sell me on Second right away, and it felt too samey. I think enough time has passed since my last JRPG (FE Conquest) that I feel like I'm ready to jump back in.

Actually recently I've been replaying Xenoblade 3DS, which is great. But I know the game pretty well. I'm looking for a new experience...

Just about to finish Trails in the Sky SC. Amazing game for sure. Trying to decide what to play next. Might end up being World of Final Fantasy just because it comes out soon and I have it preordered. I just have so many JRPGs to play in my backlog so it feels a bit crazy to buy more :P

Tales of Symphonia HD on PS3. A little more than half way through. Glad I stuck with it because I am having a lot of fun. Great towns and dungeons and the story is going all kinds of places. They somehow made me not hate a sewer dungeon. Loved shrinking down and fighting those rats and traversing those narrow paths.

I think I will be trading in Dragon Quest 7. Too long. About 30 hours in so I'd say that's a fair shake. I made it 92 hours into Disk 1 on the PS1 and even with the quality of life fixes I am starting to feel bogged down again.

Toss together a list, you never know right?

Speaking of, I've narrowed my choices down to 4 now that I've actually beaten Panzer Dragoon Saga (and connecting the series dots is still floating in my mind).

Grandia 1, Suikoden 1, Lufia 1, or Treasures of the Rudra.

Of course I haven't played an srpg in awhile... How long is Shining Force 1?

Beat Dragon Quest 7 and clocked around 80 hours, then did a quick little runthrough of Dragon Quest 1 which took 10-15 hours, and now onto Dragon Quest Builders!

Fun little marathon I must say.

But I'm still very early so maybe the battle system will click as I progress through the game.

You can assign magic/items to shortcut in menu so all you do is press L1 + button. Combat imo also starts to get much better later as you unlock more abilities ect. Definitely give it more time!

Please play this one! I love Shining Force soooo much, it's just ridiculously charming. I would say it is about a 20 hour game more or less depending on how much grinding you do. Grinding isn't really needed unless you like using a wide range of characters or something.

Have you played Shining Force 2? It's even better.

Chrono Trigger on Wii VC. I forgot how gorgeous this game is, just stunning artwork...

Currently playing Grand Kingdom thanks to the NIS America sale on PSN.

I have to say, I think this game is a gem. Not as great of an SRPG as Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics but it does enough to set itself apart and it's pretty fun. My concern though is that there isn't enough variety to the enemies, maps, units and combat to keep me interested in the game long enough to beat it. Despite having 17 different classes, many of them are extremely similar and I find myself rarely having to shift tactics.

I finished my latest play through of FFIX over the weekend. It's just as good as I remembered it being. Still playing Dragon Quest Builders off and on, but playing it more for the free build mode than anything else.

Next up - World of Final Fantasy. Amazon shipped my copy this morning, so I'll get to dig in tomorrow.

2 is the only one I played to completion but that was long ago (like 4th grade summer) so I only remember the music. I own all 4 NA released games though, so I'll be getting to that one soon. Seems pretty quick though.

Don't play Lufia 1, just go straight to the second one

Well I have both so I can't just skip it :p

I am playing Xenoblade Chronicle's on my n3DS and I am at what I assume is the point of no return on the
mechonis
and I can't decide if I should go back and finish some quests up or carry on.

Suikoden 1 is one of the best RPGs under 20 hours. Doing that will eliminate a back log quickly and you'll play a great game.

Just finished Trails of the Sky SC.
That ending was so sweet and well done, it reminded me of the ending of Xenogears in some ways. I have so many questions left though! Aaah! I knew something was fishy with Kevin, but that final scene with Weismann just makes me want to play the 3rd all the more. How connected are Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel? I know ToCS takes place in the Erebonian Empire and is sometime after Trails in the Sky. I am guessing that the Society of Ouroboros is still the enemy but I guess we'll see. I feel like Estelle and Joshua are still ripe for another game starring them, perhaps for the true final showdown with the Society?

Grandia 1,
Pretty good RPG with a great adventure feeling. Too bad it's sooo easy.

Suikoden 1

Only if you plan to do 2 immediately after, otherwise, wait.

It sucks. Skip to 2!
or Treasures of the Rudra.

Decent, pretty good OST, interesting magic system, but I think the plot is literally all over the place.

Playing Lunar: Silver Star Harmony. Just
got an airship and went through a dungeon
. And still grinding vocation levels for Aishe in Dragon Quest VII.
