what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Looks like I am going to drop Wild Arms 3. Sure, I've been wanting to play it since the PS2 times, but after so waiting so long it has not aged well. Random encounters are tedious in both encounter rate (I tend to spend all the evasion points when in a puzzle) and execution.

I don't know. Maybe Persona 4 set the bar too high, as I barely can get interested in a jrpg after that. I'm saving Bravely Default for the december Holidays, so not a lo to play right now. Maybe I could try with Terranigma or Seiken Densetsu 3, who knows.

It's been 8 months since I last played Final Fantasy X. I was stuck on
Seymour Flux
and just gave up.
Just beat him yesterday though on my second try. Everything after that went smoothly.. until I reached
Yunalesca
.

Jeez. From one boss roadblock to another.

None at the moment. Got Tokyo Mirage Sessions on hold and I refuse to start any JRPG because World of Final Fantasy is so soon.

Finished Bravely Default, with all jobs at level 14 and all party at level 99. I loved this game so much, clocked 55 hours.

I am playing Bravely Second now, and loving every second of it and I already have played it for 12 hours. After BS, I'll play Darkest Dungeon on Vita.

For all of you that are playing Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth:
This game is amazing, the story is just ok until chapter 10. From this chapter on, the story just grow and is an awesome story. Hang on!

Cool I'm on chapter 7 of Digimom Cyber Sleuth and it's great to know that the story starts to pick up. Though I already like the game and I wasn't going to drop it. Is it worth playing new game + after beating the game?

The Bouncer (going to beat it after all these years)
Grandia
Grandma 3 (just started)
Saga frontier (4th character playthrough: Asellus)
Arc the lad 2
Breath of fire 3
Persona 3, 4
FFX-2 (in the final dungeon)

Recently beaten:
Persona 2: EP (yay! :)
Dragon quest 2 (snes)

I finished TMS few days ago. Not a masterpiece by any means, but it was good.

Final boss was fucking insanely hard for me lol.

Can't wait for FFXV.

Playing Ni No Kuni at the moment and i'm really enjoying it.

I'm jealous. First palythrough of that game was so good, charming and very memorable.

Any JRPG with turn based combat like the Shadowrun games or Xcom? (PS3 or PC)

I haven't played Shadowrun, but a SRPG series like Fire Emblem is probably the closest Japanese equivalent to something like modern Xcom. If you are up for more story/exploration with your turn-based combat, you could try one of the Trails series. Trails in the Sky FC and SC on Steam, or Trails of Cold Steel 1 & 2 on PS3.

Trails in the Sky is a decade old series that has more recently been ported/localized to PSP and PC. Trails of Cold Steel is the more current follow up series (the first game came out in Japan 3 years ago).

The main town is a lazy (putting it nicely) set of menu items. There are other places where people reside that you visit which make it sound like there are towns and other people to talk to (at least in menu form), but they're not even lazy implementations of towns, they're just more bland copy and paste dungeons.

As I said, that's actually common for CH games. You have one "town" and even if the story sends you into a smaller town, it's always another dungeon. Though, the story gives enough reason for the town to be almost destroyed.

Again, it's not a game for everyone and CH games are usually made on short budget, but I still find those quite entertaining.

This may sound crazy: but if you loved the turn based XCom, try Steamworld Heist. Not a JRPG in any means, but a really really fun turn based shooter. Watch up on it on YouTube. I LOVE Steamworld, a really really fun strategy game with many different ways to tackle a situation.

Yeah, i played the Trails series in Steam. I need to buy the Cold Steel in PS3 yet. I only play Fire Emblem in Wii, i need a 3DS for the new games.

No, there's nothing new in new game plus, it's just there if you want to go through the story again without resetting to 0 i think.

Ohhhh yeah I've also been grinding away in PSP2i an even went back to DQ9 after 7 left such a bad taste in my mouth. Bedrest + grinding = road to recovery!

Well my PS4 HDMI output isn't working anymore (tried different cables and tv, no dice. It randomly started working again for a few hours but after that it just stopped and hasn't come back since) so looks like Cyber Sleuth is going to be forcibly put on-hold until I take care of that. Between this and my DS4 fucking up earlier this year I can't say I'm too impressed with Sony's hardware.

At least SMT Apocalypse has been great and I still have a lot of non-PS4 stuff to take care of so it's not that big of a deal I suppose. Though things might start to get a little complicated if I can't get it fixed by the time XV comes around.

Dragon Quest III (iOS) now. Collecting the orbs. Keep meaning to try Trails in the Sky more as people keep saying Estelle is more than unbelievably dumb and shout-y and that the world is well developed. I just wasn't hooked when I first tried it and I keep not feeling it when I do give it some time.

Just finished Pokemon Conquest. It was a pretty fun and quick spin-off game. I really liked the character designs, it makes me wonder what the other Nobunaga's Revenge games were like (that weren't released in the West).

Now starting on Radiant Historia, only a few hours in and I can already tell I'm in for a treat. Music is awesome, main character is likable, battle system is engaging. I hope the time-hopping won't get tedious, currently it's pretty intriguing.

I just got the headquarters expansion in Suikoden 5 and am running around recruiting new people.

So, 3 things have started to annoy me with this game that's slightly souring me on it:
-The RTS battles... way to force me to play one of my least favorite game genres.

-In some dungeons (think, the ruins where you first get Jeanne), the encounter rate is ridiculous.

-Some of the characters have the most ridiculous, you would never figure this out without a guide, methods to recruit. Some of them, you will need to see scenes 10-15 hours before you even have a chance to get them (and god forbid if you miss those scenes), and of course these scenes have a limited window before they are gone for good. Others are pretty weird - like going through a dungeon and having one of 2 old guys in your party with a level > than the hero's, or making sure to both bring some hot girls along with you and hope you beat the shitty RTS battles without taking too much damage.

Overall, the game isn't as good as 1, 2 or Tierkreis, on a similar level to 3 and Tactics. But much better than the 4th game.

Pretty sure having to do the RTS battles is why I never beat Suikoden 5 years ago despite really liking it.

I'm not playing any JRPG. The last JRPG I played was Xenoblade X. The characters were lifeless and repetitive, full of anime clichés, and the story was a bog-standard anime script, full of hammy, awful anime dialogue. The music was out of place and also excessively bombastic and the melodies and vocals are dripping with J-Pop cheese. Antagonists were all forgettable, and amounted to nothing more than trash-talkers, and comic relief characters like Tatsu are simply gratuitous. It's strange how Monolith are a developer that seem determined to push the JRPG forward, yet the stories and characters still cling to stale anime tropes and clichés. I don't understand it. This series needs new writers, imo.

It completely put me off JRPGs. I realised then and there that the writing and stories in JRPGs are mostly for young children.

FFIX on the Vita. It's easily my favorite mainline FF game. This will be my 5th playthrough (I try to play it once every couple of years).

Next up - World of Final Fantasy next week. PS4. I guess I'm in a FF groove right now!

Persona 3 Portable, but this is my second time playing it. Back in 2010 I tried playing it but it felt never-ending, didn't pay attention to the Personas' stats and fusions and got kind of bored and quit...

This time, I'm grinding as much as i need in one go, reach the last available floor and then play the rest of the daily life at a swift pace. So far, the best s.links are the old couple, the mysterious boy and Chihiro (which i'm waifuing at the moment).

This game benefits a lot from a 16:9 screen res, since it looks more clear and simple
latest

P3FES looks more convoluted

Whenever I start a new Suikoden game now I google a spoiler-free missable lists because fuck missing a scene where I have to go down an allyway a certain way in a city that becomes closed off to get a character 8 hours later (LOOKING AT YOU S2 CLIVE)

In the middle of a bunch still:

Star Ocean 2: the Second Story
-Disk 1, second continent as Claude at the arena.

I am Setsuna
-About to get my airship, I think, the dungeon before it.

Xenoblade Chronicles X
-2nd playthrough, 200 hours total, post-game stuff. Never ends.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE
-First major chapter, at the main dungeon currently. The one with the

Dragon Quest VII
-Early on, just rose/saved my first continent and returned home.

Currently revisiting my PS2 years and playing through Arc the Lad: Twilight Spirits on PS4, such good nostalgia.

Patiently waiting for Legend of Legaia 2: Duel Saga on PS4 too, maaaaaan, I really enjoyed that game back in the good old days.

Makes me sad that the JRPG genre has dwindled so...

FF14 if that counts, although it's a MMO.
I've cleared the main story for A Realm Reborn but because I didn't buy the Heavensward expansion when it was on sale for $10 my level is capped at 50. Instead of doing more story-related stuff for now I'm just doing fun stuff like learning dances lol.

I just finished Star Ocean 5. What a disappointment. I knew it wasn't received all that well but I thought maybe people were just overreacting.

You can feel the missing budget in every facet with this game. The last one I pmayed was Star Ocean 3 and that ps2 game was leagues ahead of this one in terms of combat depth, content and even story as crazy as it is.

It feels like the Devs came up with nice ideas, started turning them into game mechanics and then noticed they didn't have enough time or money to do it. Everything is just half done.

It's really a shame because there is a good base.

One good thing is that Relia (the child character) is adorable. :P
Only with japanese voice acting though...otherwise she sounds like a 25 year-old trying to sound like a little girl.

I just finished Fire Emblem Fates Conquest.

Awakening /really/ soured me on one of my favorite franchises, so I wasn't really looking forward to Fates, but Conquest has put me back on board. The narrative stuff is dumb but the gameplay is really great, some of the best in the series even. So many great maps and objectives, even if a few of them tilt a little too far into gimmick territory. As I said earlier, changes to the pairing system also make a huge difference.

I kinda hope the next game isn't so much "Matchmaker Emblem", as I feel the support conversions are generally weaker than earlier titles (which isn't much a surprise considering just how many there are). But knowing those elements are really popular, I don't mind too much as long as the compelling strategy gameplay stays.

I guess I'll dive into Revelation now, hearing some mixed things on that.

This post is 100%.

Awakening was my first FE game, but the pairing system makes me never want to go back to Awakening. My biggest complaint about Awakening was the maps and objectives (always the same) and Conquest mixes it up. So as a newcomer to the FE series, I thought Conquest was one of the best turn based strategy games I've ever played.

I also completely agree with the story and support conversations. I read every one in Awakening and about 1/4 of the way through Conquest, I stopped reading them altogether and just mashed Skip through each one. But they didn't bother me, I just didn't do them or the petting/relationship mini game. If people want that, great. I just skip over it and doesn't impact the game.

And the story was dumb, but I actually really enjoyed the last three chapters of the game. It was fun and interesting enough to give me another hook to keep on playing. Although, it's kinda of Advance Wars, you don't really need much reason/context for a good strategy game as long as the game is strategic, fun, and fair.

... Let me know when you go in Revelations. I went Hard/Casual through Conquest and it was PERFECT. It was plenty thought provoking and challenging and I even had my entire party wiped out a few times. I was thinking of going Hard/Classic through Revelations because I hear that its easier than Conquest.

Near the end of Chapter 7 of Trails in the Sky SC. Loving every moment of it, though a bit frustrated I missed a single copy of Liberl News! How painful.

I envy you. I gave up on SC at the start of Chapter 3. It's mostly my fault for playing it on PC and I hate playing it on PC, if I had the Vita/PSP version I would've kept on going.

Trails is great, but damn the music and graphics are so... boring. The dungeon design also isn't a strength either. And the combat system is slow. BUT the writing and dialog are A++++. Maybe I'll return to it in the future...

I rather like the Dynamic between the Nohrian Siblings, an interesting mix of stand off ness and Familial Fortitude. Xander in particular is probably one of the best characters in the series and his support with Corrin is so filled with brilliance it seems out of place. Then again, I read into everything so I ended up liking the story overall even it has some pretty solid flaws.

I think I still prefer Thracia overall but Conquest has the best implementations of Skills in the series into its map designs.

I finished it last summer for the first time. I had the same first impressions as you, great music, fun battle system, and an interesting story.

By the end the music was
reptitive. Good, but after a few hours I felt like I heard all the tracks in the game. It needed more. The lack of variety in the OST, soured me after a strong first impression
. The main character remained strong and likeable. The battle system is awesome. I really think its one of the best in the JRPG genre and should be re-explored and used again in a future JRPG. The story (non-story spoiler, just my impressions)
was solid, but never really AMPED UP and got crazy and unpredictable like JRPGs traditionally do. It was pretty straight forward, it's a fast ball with no curves or breaks or "woah I didn't see THAT coming!". I like the crazy/unpredictable in my JRPGs. This was right down the middle,
it executed well - but not what I personally wanted.

All in all, it's a pretty good JRPG. The battle system drives it forward more than anything and I wasn't disappointed that I had took the time to play and finish it. It's somewhere on on the #10 side of my Top 10 JRPGs.

The music really? I personally love the music.

It's relaxing... too much relaxing, on the side of boring lol. The battle music is, okay. But its the same damn track for 80+ hours. I don't know, it didn't move me. Same for the graphics/visuals. They're solid PSX 2.5D graphics. But nothing that will amaze you, the art style itself is JRPG-Maker generic.

... That said I really LOVED the FC. I think I just got burnt out playing through SC.

You get a lot more moments of intense music as the game goes on as well.

I do entirely agree with your opinions on Radiant Historia.

I actually didn't dislike Fire Emblem Fates story as much as I feared, but I think that's largely because I don't really care too much on that front? As long as there's some semblance of a plot, preferably with a pulse, that works as a vehicle for great gameplay, that's fine for me.

As for supports, I mostly think it's just a factor of there being just so many in comparison to earlier games, such that they start to blend together.

I envy you. I gave up on SC at the start of Chapter 3. It's mostly my fault for playing it on PC and I hate playing it on PC, if I had the Vita/PSP version I would've kept on going.

I'm in a similar boat. I got up to chapter 4 of SC last year but stopped. Kinda related to the above comment, I think the story and writing are great. Really great. But... that's not what really gets me to become enamored with a game. I'm with you, the dungeon design, general structure of the game, and battle system are only so-so for me. I kind of find myself wishing that there was more "game" to Trails in the Sky than there is.

I'll reiterate that I think it does what it does well, but it's just not quite the style of JRPG that I really click with.

I love Radiant Historia's battle system. Aht and her traps were the best. And yes, unfortunately the OST only has like 20 tracks total so its reused a lot.

I kinda completed Trails of Cold Steel II last week and playing (and currently very absorbed) Dragon Quest Builders.

One questions about Trails of Cold Steel II
how essential is the epilogue? I'm kinda lazy to touch it coz I found the game a bit of a slog till the finale.

Yeah, Trails' music is my second favorite thing about it, after its story. SC's final boss theme, in particular, is insane - maybe my favorite song in the series. Overall, though, I think The 3rd and Ao/Azure have the best soundtracks in the series.

Speaking of Falcom, I just finished Tokyo Xanadu (eX+) the other day after 90 hours. It wasn't without its issues, but I enjoyed it a lot nonetheless. Gameplay and especially music were fantastic.

Now I'm playing Vantage Master, which is brutal even on Normal difficulty. Really fun though, and I like that it's a SRPG that really prioritizes strategy over stats. It even has multiplayer. It's free, too!

Apart from a few songs (usually late-game boss battles) I found the music to the 2 Trails games I played to be extremely mediocre. Jazzy airy fare with more accordians than a minimal techno mix from 2007 (here if you don't get that reference). Really not my preferred type of music (especially compared to the 80's synth buttrock of the old Ys games, which I love) but to each their own.

About ten hours into Arc the Lad III and I'm really enjoying it. I heard bad things about it in comparison to its predecessor, but after loving ATLII I'm finding this almost as enjoyable, particularly with seeing what happened to the old cast. The variety of missions is great too, with several of them being non-combat to break up the battles. It makes taking the guild job sidequests really interesting, a bit like Trails in the Sky, as you never know what's up next.

I only played the first two last year, and would definitely recommend the series to anyone with a Vita looking for a great set of old-school RPGs to play on the train.

Trails in the sky is my commute game on vita, but at home I've been playing through trails of cold steel 2. 15 minutes after seeing the credits to 1, I immediately went out to buy 2. I am hooked into the trails series.

Final Fantasy VII....for the first time, checking out what's the deal with the massive adoration for it.

Picked up on ps4
Don't really know if I'll have the patience for the menus, save points and confusing pre-rendered backgkounds (navigation is terrible)
The battle is great. and despite being a ps1 game, graphics are bareable.
5 hours in, liking it so far.

Edit: Planning to go for X/X-2 after, already bought them
Missed the whole PS1 and PS2 era, had only nintendo consoles and PC and these feel like worthwhile to catch up
