what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Replaying this much beloved classic...

Started up Ys 1 on Steam (Big Picture mode, natch) - never played any of the games in the series before.

Also slowly working my way through Tales of Graces F, enjoying the co-op combat playing with my two sons.

Hmm... really need to get back to Fire Emblem and start up Atelier Meruru though...

About 3 hours into my first SMT game, Devil Survivor Overclocked, enjoying it so far.

I'm also chipping away at Xenoblade, got it in 2011 and I just got to Sword Valley.

I've not been able to play a JRPG for ages now, hated FF13, it was just sooo bad. But I'm eager to play Kingdom Hearts when that releases. Haven't had a chance to try ni no kuni either, heard its a stellar game.

I just finished Grandia III last night. I played Grandia I on PSN a few months ago and I played Grandia II and III back to back. I'll note I played the PS2 version of Grandia II, despite knowing all the issues it has. It wasn't too bad though, it only froze up on me 8 times.

Anyways Grandia III is my favorite of the trio. It definitely has one of the cheesiest (yes cheesy is the best word to describe it) stories in any JRPG I've played - and I've played a good number of them - but I really appreciated some of the modifications to the battle system. First of all, canceling seemed more significant now because not only does it interrupt the attack, it allows the played to perform a stronger 'aerial attack' which doesnt use SP/MP. And speaking of SP - I felt it was... more properly implemented in this game, largely due to Save Points not replenishing it, so you couldn't just spam hit-all skills in late game like you could in Grandia I/II (although you could still do that with some magics). And speaking of Save Points, I felt the difficulty of the game was slightly better because every single Save Point in Grandia I/II healed you completely - another thing modified in Grandia III.

The soundtrack was pretty good as well, with the large exception of this monstrosity. Oh my lord. My favorite track was probably Surmania

Xenogears is still my no. 1 JRPG of all time, simply fantastic in every way.

Finished FF9, took about 37 hours or so (36 of those were played on my daily commute). It was the final post PS1 single player FF that I had yet to finish.

Excellent game, from the character to the story, music and visuals. The visuals hold up so well thanks to the beautiful prerendered backgrounds and the character animation is no slouch either, a lot of unique moment specific animation going on.

Did kind of feel overpowered towards the end though with the auto-potion and auto-regen hehe.

An easy 10/10, highly recommended.

It took me 8 years, but i finally beat Xenogears.

Also,
Xenogears
looks absolutely breathtaking even in low quality anime.

At least you have actually played the game. I still want to finish Xenoblade, and then take a small break before tackling another JRPG. Even then, my next JRPG will probably be Tales of Xillia. I'll never get to play Xenogear. :-(

Just finished Xenosaga episode II.
Going to start with Xenosaga episode III tonight.
I'm excited.

III is the best of the trilogy - you will love it (I liked II ok, but it seemed so small compared to I... III is epic!)

I'm playing Shadow Hearts: Covenant and FF XIII

Shadow Hearts is always amazing of course, but I'm surprised by how much I like XIII. I mean, it's not my favorite FF (X!), but I was expecting it to be truly horrible. I like most of the characters (even Vanille) and the plot is interesting. Love the battle system, and I am a die hard micro managing turn based fan.

I'm thinking of getting into the Tales games. Any recommendations for a newbie? I have all the Sony consoles and portables except Vita.

I can't believe I missed this post. II was the weakest in the trilogy. III will blow you away. One of the best games on the PS2. Just endure some of the awkward censoring.

I'm getting weird glitches for Sora no Kiseki SC for PSP. When the screen changes sometimes (most of the time) it "bumps" down. If I go back and forth a couple times it starts screen tearing. And it seems like it has to read/load from the disc an awful lot.

It's really weird; FC ran better for both regions.

*high five*

Loved XIII as well, Fang was my fave.

The funny thing is that it gets so much hate for being linear, from the progression to the environments, and yet I didn't feel like things were much different when playing Final Fantasy 9, which everyone loves.

I started with Xenosaga II. I didn't know it was a direct sequel (about as direct as you can get!) I think for that reason I tolerate it a bit more than most people, because the changes made from the first game I obviously was not aware of. I had to read up a lot of wiki articles to understand what was going on, heh.

Since then, I have gone through the trilogy in order, and in the end Xenosaga II is the least enjoyable for me, but I still appreciate it because the URTV plotline is much more interesting than anything else - something that episode II focused on.

Final Fantasy VII, on Steam. I actually haven't played a Final Fantasy game before this one so I'm eager to get into it.

Ni no kuni. I love the game but i think it is because i was craving and "old school-esque" rpg. Also its studio ghibli... I think there is A LOT of missed oppurtunity and laziness in the game. Coulda been pushed so much further.

I'm getting back into FFXIII-2. I put 4 hours into it and was just warping around before meeting Hope when I first started it about 6 months ago, but this time I'm in it for the long haul.

I'm thinking of getting into the Tales games. Any recommendations for a newbie? I have all the Sony consoles and portables except Vita.

Without a 360 and without importing from Japan, you're probably best to wait until Xillia releases next month.

Graces f would work too if you want to jump in now. Be warned that it is regarded as having the best combat but a terribly cliché cast and story.

Skies of Arcadia Legends

I never finished it on Dreamcast and didn't remember much. I'm now playing it on GC more than 10 years later, and that game is amazing.
It shows that it was from a time when JRPG where treated as much more than niche fan-service things. It's BIG, well written, and the gameplay systems are thoughtful and unapologetic about being a real traditional jRPG. I love it.

Replaying Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, went Law route this time around. On the last sector, gotta kill
Jiminez and Mem Aleph
.

I adored II's story, which includes the URTV plotline. I really enjoyed how Junior got a lot of development in the game. I understand a little how Takahashi would have handled the other games. I bet Ziggy was supposed to have a game that really focused on his tale.

His game was a phone game, and it is basically directly referenced in Xenosaga III. (I havent played it.) You had to do some reading (I forget if it was included in Episode III's logbook) to understand the
Voyager/Canaan
stuff.

Holy shit, I feel so bad for Ziggy. He deserved more than a phone game. It's even more depressing that it wasn't localized.

Does Dragon's Dogma: DA count?
It's all I've played this past month, along with Animal Crossing. Up to 100 hours, part way through my New Game+ ... haven't even started on the expansion yet. Game of the forever.

I've just started playing Final Fantasy VI. I've never played it before, but I've heard a lot of good things about it. I'm really looking forward to it.

Picked up Dragon Quest VIII the other day and I'm playing through it right now.

Only up to Ascantha but I'm really enjoying the game. First time playing a DQ game and the monster designs are so charming and I love the world. I can't wait to play the other games in the series, will probably play IX next and I will grab the DS remakes sometime.

Started Tales of Vesperia today. Loved the game so far, and i love the dog with the pipe :). W00f.

Repede's the man...er dawg yo!

Currently playing through Atelier Ayesha myself. Enjoying this so much more than the previous Atelier titles. I love that the time frames are more lenient, it makes it more relaxing IMO.
