what jrpg are you playing right now ?

You're getting Valkyrie Profile mixed on with Valkyria Chronicles. :p

I liked Valkyrie Profile 2's battle system and sub-systems more than the original, but not how they handled einherjar or the plot in general.

Not sure which game I'd give the overall edge to.
Yeah, the plot is really another issue I'm having with the second one. I figure I'll still slowly chug through it though, even if only to see how some of the things from the first one are resolved.

Last month I started and beat Dark Souls after a 2 year hiatus when I was stuck in "The Depths" with the basilliks..

I really want a new JRPG to play. I'm thinking about a Tales game, but I fear I'll be very disappointed (but where would be a good place to start should I pick one? Some friends I have who like them say Graces f is a good spot since it's the first current gen, but I"m ok with a superior title even if it's on PS2 or Wii or DS )

Also thinking about FF IX. I never finished it, and it's cheap on PSN, but I'd really prefer a totally new experience. I still haven't played Ni no Kuni, but it's in my backlog and I'd like to give it proper attention.

Oh boy, if your already having problems with the plot then the big twist is probably going to make you want to drill out your brain from the stupidity.

JUST GO FOR IT! I finished it again recently, it has a slow build up but it's still an excellent game.

As for myself I started up Chrono Trigger again last night, the music makes this game 10x the experience it should be.

Vesperia. Also FFIX is great.

I've been in kind of a weird spot lately where I really want to start a JRPG but can't for the life of me pick what I want to jump into. I just have so many sitting around that I am really interested in playing that trying to pick one is really overwhelming.

I know its kind of a silly issue to have but I always have trouble with this kind of thing due to some medical issues that make anything with tons of variables a living hell for me.

I need to just pick somewhere to start in order to make my way through my massive JRPG collection / backlog. Reading what other people are interested in / are playing kind of helps somehow in picking what I feel like starting up so hopefully I will be able to make a choice now.

FFXIII and finally started up White Knight Chronicles as well. Enjoying both, but am thinking I will be spending much more time with WKC. Digging that game way more than I ever thought I would and it's really cool that the first one comes on the disk with the second one. Wish I had bought it sooner.

Graces F is very good but how much enjoyment you get out of it depends on how important good stories are for you, because Graces F's story is just decent. The gameplay is really good however and the cast is fun.

I've been thinking it is about time I started XenoBlade.

What do you guys think?

I mean it is either that, or Lost Odyssey.

Play Xenoblade. Great game and will last you a long time. Don't get too caught up in doing sidequests unless you really want to though. But still do some and accept all you can so you don't get crushed by enemies.

I'm finally getting around to Bowser's Inside Story in anticipation for Dream Team. It's pretty good, so far, but the tutorial stuff wears on a bit much at times.

Hey Gaf, maybe this is the appropriate thread for this question.

If I've never played much from the JRPG genre, but really want to get enveloped in something that makes me loose touch with reality, what game should I start with? I've always had trouble keeping interested in turn based games, but if the story is rich and interesting enough, I'll give it a try.

Xenoblade. Although I was originally one of those people decrying it as being one of those overhyped games after putting in 6 or so hours. But once it clicked...it really clicked. The story made me play into the late hours of the morning dying to see what would happen next. The world and the story are something that shouldn't be missed. Don't do all the side-quests and switch up your party members. Get ready to devote some time though, because it sure isn't a short game.

While Lost Odyssey was good, I felt that in the end it was a somewhat uninspired experience outside of the short stories. Still a good game though.

I highly recommend The Last Story for Wii. It has a very fast paced real-time combat system, has a story that hooks you right away with interesting characters, and it doesn't overstay it's welcome. As someone who hasn't played much of the genre I could see you really enjoying it. It also has music from Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy fame, and was directed by the creator of Final Fantasy.

I'm 44 hours into Xenoblade and I finally got into it. I had just been kind of pushing my way through, not really thinking much of it besides it's a pretty game. The story just didn't grab me, until now, anyway. I'm really digging it now.

The Last Story was a good time, I enjoyed my play through of it. It isn't very long and it's very simple to play, it makes a very good entry RPG.

Thanks for the response! I probably should have listed my platforms first because I don't have a Wii :/ I have a ps3 and a Vita

NiNoKuNi...I'm only like 5 hours in, can never seem to sink the time and TLOU is consuming me right now with multiple-playthroughs...

Still, I know LEve's 5 beautiful RPG will hook me.

Later on in the year I'll finally get a 3DS and get Fire Emblem and Pokemon X/Y

I've recently finished Grandia III. Although I understand why this game got panned around the time it was released, I don't get why it doesn't get more attention nowadays. The story isn't all that, but it's enjoyable... And DAT BATTLESYSTEM

Gonna start on Rogue Galaxy now.

Probably because of the creepy incest subtext between the lead and his mom during the opening of the game. Not the greatest way to introduce characters that players are suppose to spend multiple hours with.

I'm trying to finish Persona 4 Golden. It was a really fun game when I started but honestly, the thing people see as a plus. kind of turned me off from it. The whole studying, social links, events on certain days kind of things actually kind of turned me off from the game. I kind of felt pressured to look at a guide to see what I may have been missing, then the whole deal with dungeons taking up your time too kind of turned me off completely. I thought all those choices of what to do were kind of a turn off and I don't really know why.

Which is weird, because I downloaded Zero Escape Virtue's Last Reward or whatever, and I find the whole choices lead to completely different endings (good or bad) and I'm loving it. Obviously, they're not completely comparable but I don't find all these choices overwhelming compared to P4 where I feel like I may miss something important.

In that case, Nier (PS3). It has real-time action combat, a very interesting and different post apocalyptic world setting, and one of the best endings in a videogame IMO. Some really thought provoking stuff in this game's story that made me think about it days after finishing. It also has one of the most critically acclaimed soundtracks in recent memory. It's also dirt cheap last I checked.

I think I beat it in 20-24 hours iirc. So you won't have to worry about a 100 hour beast that drags on. There are multiple endings too.

.

Let me counter this and say that Graces F was, in my opinion, absolutely terrible. The plot was just plain bad and while the fighting system was ok, it was nothing compared to the best of the series. Bad characters, bad story, bland environments, laughable puzzles, just a poor game.

After all the hype the battle system got I found the game to be an incredibly plodding experience that I pretty much hated thoroughly. I think I am pretty easy to please where it concerns JRPGs too.

Don't forget the awesome soundtrack!

Oh god my ears! That second track reminds me of "Chaotic Dance" from Baten Kaitos. Gotta say that Motoi Sakuraba is my least favorite JRPG composer....except for his work in Dark Souls and a few tracks from Star Ocean 2.

...His Baten Kaitos work is excellent, Origins especially. Tales of Symphonia is also very good, and Star Ocean 3, Valkyrie Profile 2, and Tales of Destiny are good as well.

Nothing? What's the best in the series then?

I hated the CC system at first, I just wanted the good old TP to come back but after a while, it grew on me. And with the addictive title leveling, I think it was easily the best Tales of game gameplay-wise. Story was bad tho ye

Just bought Ni No Kuni and Super Paper Mario today

Still finishing off Fire Emblem atm and will pick up Paper Mario 3DS + Kingdom Hearts 3DS too once the console games are done.

Loving the style of Ni No Kuni too, coincidently making a children's theatre show where a kid goes into a video game with a bunch of Shinto character and story references so wondering where this game goes is definitely going to be a point of reference i think!

Almost 60 hours in. It's amazing.

the story is bad like a tales game. everything else is phenomenal. okay, the soundtrack has a few stinkers. people would kill to get games at that quality regularly in this generation.

i don't even remember that. the mom was one of the better characters. pity she left so early.

After 3 years of on and off playing Resonance of Fate, it's finally clicking, lol. Boss fights are quite challenging but it's very satisfying too. I think I'll finish it by next week.

Characters are great, the Eng dub is wonderful. Nolan North is really good here.
The only downside I think it's the poor tutorial the game has in the beginning and there is very little environment variety, it's all too gray, still looks good.

tri-ace went out with a bang still, this as their last game I think it's pretty great.

I'd say ignore the niche titles that other gaffers suggested. If I were you I'd wait for FFX HD when it's out on Vita later this year. It combines the classic feel and polish of FF with the modern aspect of good graphics, production values and more fast-paced system than older RPGs.

Currently Playing:
Legend of Dragoon

On Deck:
Final Fantasy V Advance

After that is up in the air. I've recently decided to try out the Dragon Quest series as I picked up VIII for cheap a little while back, but decided to try out the DS titles first. Based on the suggestions I've seen here, I went with Dragon Quest V and may pick up IV down the line.

Additionally, I've gotten a lot out of the PSN catalog of PSOne JRPGs and was looking to get some more. Are Grandia, Breath of Fire IV, and Xenogears worth picking up?

Playing a lot of fire emblem, may go back and finish tales of the abyss. Looking for a new console jrpg, out of ni no kuni, tales of graces and tales of xilia which would people recommend?

A replay of Final Fantasy IX, currently.

Next up is Tales of Vesperia if I can fight off the urge to play Xenoblade again.

That is, if I have the time for any of this, which is questionable.
