what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Persona 4 Golden.

Isn't this game supposed to be a joke? I've heard nothing but bad things about it.

It's a fun game with a lot of content as long as you don't have expectations from the story.

I heard how terrible it is too, but I kind of want to see for myself.

I wanted to play P4G, but haven't beaten Persona 3. I know the stories are related but I heard P4 is a bigger improvement to what P3 was

They're standalone stories.

Replaying FF9 as I never finished it back when it was released. My PSX crapped out at the 4th disc. Am on 3rd one right now and I actually remember bits and pieces. Great game in any case

Finished Dragon Fantasy yesterday.

First chapter, which is by far the longest (four hours), is just 1v1 battles. Hope you enjoy exchanging blows and healing up every 3 or 4 turns.
The second, which doesn't last more than two hours finally introduces party members (4) but you're still only ever fighting one enemy. The party members are also terrible fill-ins named Casty (the caster) and Punchy (the melee guy!). Oh, and and another melee character without much of a story called Serps. There are no melee skills for anyone in this chapter, so essentially Serps and Punchy are only good for equipping weapons on (to improve normal attack damage) or using herbs on party members.
Final chapter takes an hour and a half. Finally, multiple enemy battles are introduced. Unfortunately you're stuck with a party of two lightly armoured melee characters. They can learn a few melee skills but for the most part you're just going to be stuck pressing attack and using herbs to heal up after a battle. One character can learn a heal but she had all of 12MP by the time I finished the chapter (heal cost 3 mana if I remember right).

Seems like a game that slowly grew as it was being built, but improvements were never added to earlier content.

What did you's decide in the end?
I haven't got a bloody clue... Both amazing

It really depends on how you define "games." We are both lawyers so you can imagine how ridiculous the conversation was.

Generally, here is what we came up with:

Video Games are a unique type of media. Unlike books, movies, TV really anything before it, the strength of video games are the "experience" they create. The experience requires input from the viewer. This gives video games a unique canvass in which to paint.

Game developers use tools to deliver the best "experience."

TLOU focused on the narrative. It wanted and did tell a compelling story along with gameplay that did seem to fit into the narrative itself. TLOU like or hate it is the best attempt so far to meld a video game that is an interactive movie. It creates a certain type of experience.

I argued with my buddy (who loved TLOU more than me), that the game was fantastic, but I think he was giving it to high of marks because its a good story "told in a video game." The argument "wow, can you believe this story was in a video game?!"

If you look at the narrative on its on, it is very good, but IM sure we can find some movies that have come out in the last year that probably have better stories.

The gameplay is good, very good, but I think we can find games that have come out in the last year with as good and better gameplay.

But, Tex117, they did both so well. Yes, they did, and its the synergy of the two that makes the game great.

Souls on the other hand takes the exact opposite approach. Instead of a narrative in the linear, traditional sense of TLOU, it creates a world to explore and discover at your will. You could play the entire game and know very little about what was going on.

It sacrificed narrative to enhance the "experience" to focus on "discovery" and "gameplay" to enhance the experience.

The gameplay, love or hate it...was very involved and strategic. It demanded your mind in the game at all times. No distractions. Focus. Your mind must be in the game or you would not progress.

Any Souls player worth their salt has been on wiki checking out weapon upgrades. The lore and narrative it told was hidden and deep...more like a puzzle than a story.

In the end, as is everything, it all comes down to preference. I liked the Souls style of games because I love discovering things on my own and to have those discoveries mean something. I think this approach is unique to Video Games over all other mediums.

My buddy, a lawyer, but undergrad theater major, loved TLOU because the narrative and gameplay finally came together for him and he liked that experience more. Im excited to see what the next step for this style of game will be.

They both fantastic games of the generation that show two very different approaches to how video games are created and how they can differ in visioin.

About 5 hours into Arc the Lad 2 now and it is so, so good.

Great old school 2D visuals and music and the battle system is a fun mix of ATB and SRPG (with free character movement and in battle weapon switching).

Really digging the localization for this.

Finished Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - My Life as a King. Well, it isn't much of a jrpg, but more like a half-rpg/half-city builder?

Either way, it was an interesting title, I'm genuinely surprised it's so unknown, it was freacking addictive.

Now I don't know what to play, I don't feel like starting anything big because of XIV beta in a couple of weeks, I'll probably just focus on finishing my third playtrough on Xenosaga ep. III.

All the SMT4 talk has convinced me to possibly purchase a VITA to play Persona 1/2 while my 3DS is back home until late August.

Been watching a bit of Let's Play videos for P1 PSP to help as a primer for the combat and gameplay and it looks far more interesting and enjoyable than I was led to believe.

But damn...I really wish I had my 3DS to play SMT4.

Earthbound, SMT IV and Tales of Hearts R currently. All about 6-8 hours in.
It's really hard to decide what to play of those three (and Animal Crossing), they're all great.

Just beat Ys The oath in Felghana. Now playing Pokemon heart gold on me live stream.

I haven't played a Pokemon game since red and blue. Im having a ridiculous amount of fun

Really cool to hear! It's always better to form your own judgments than relying on message board posts from strangers haha. There's only three of us P1 fans here on GAF for some reason, maybe you'll join the party in the future.

I'm holding back on full SMT4 thoughts for now. I'll just say that all those people complaining about pretty 2D Kaneko battle sprites and art really ought to redirect their budget anger towards towns being reduced to menus. That's the real bummer here, unless things change later?

Dungeons though!

I found a copy of Folklore for $15. I've only put an hour and a half into it so far, but it seems like a good game from what I played. Looking forward to when I have time this weekend to play some more of it.

i played folklore for a bit hoping it would be reminiscent to koudelka or shadow hearts , not so much .

Xenogears, and I'm probably not going to finish it this time because I just don't have the patience for this shit anymore. Maybe it's just this particular game, too many long unskippable cutscenes followed by multiple boss fights.

I like what I have seen, and I have played a decent amount of P2:IS that I actually might end up preferring P1 gameplay FAR more than in Innocent Sin(not sure if EP fixes much of my quibbles).

I don't mind the lack of demon "fusion" system in P2, but it's nice to see P1 retained it as I am not too impressed at all by the card grinding in P2. Demon negotiation, combat fusion skills, and of course card grinding REALLY dampens the progression and pacing in P2...a LOT. To the point that I really am at odds trying to love Innocent Sin. In an effort to expand the core systems of P1, Atlus really just added so much excess bloat...not surprising P3 really scaled it all back and went with an entirely original concept(and a return to fusing).

I like the more tactical nature of positioning and skill area effects for how you setup your party. I can see this getting irritating at moments, or wasting precious turns switching rows just so an attack can actually work...but it's far less messy than I have found P2 still.

I've only watched a bit of P1 so far, but the glimpse I have seen is enough to win me over.

I was making my way through Disgaea 3 a few weeks ago. Still slogging at it, most fun I've had with a Disgaea game so far now that I'm actually exploring character creation and passing bills.

(I played Disgaea 4 as if I was playing any other S RPG and I was bored out of my mind)

Super Mario RPG (SNES)

Also, I am about to finally start The Last Story. I am a little embarassed to admit that I have not played the game yet, considering how involved I am with Operation Rainfall. I played Xenoblade to death though.

Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Job System.
Never got the chance to play it on PS2 so decided to play it emulated with fan translations of the text, audio is in English.

Also SMTIV. Finishing up my first (Neutral) playthrough. Nothing but love for this game.

Also playing Xenogears (PSP) but it's not a new playthrough, I've been going through the same save slowly for years. The game always looked high quality and one of those PS1 era RPGs. But yeah, it is slow and a long game. Then again, I haven't really played a typical RPG like it for years. Now I'm finally starting to get into this style again. It's bringing that RPG nostalgia back.

I just defended Shevat from Solaris, have Maria and Chu Chu, and need to head for Nisan. This bit in Shevat was very enjoyable.

Kingdom Hearts 3D. The Tron: Legacy world has been the best part of it so far. Mostly because it's just the plot of the movie and barely any of the "hearts and friendship" stuff they like throw around.

YAY! First post!

Anyway, as of right now I'm playing Suikoden II and Dragon Quest IV (DS version).

I've got one hell of an itching to play though Lufia II again.

Just finished Half Minute Hero!

That game is wonderful! One of the most shining hidden gems for sure!
The whole concept is genius. Gameplay is very well balanced too.
The characters are hilarious.

There is a sequel that unfortunately was never localized, too bad :/

Now on to Assassin's Creed Liberation and then Jeanne D'Arc, hoping to crush my intolerance against SRPGs.
