what jrpg are you playing right now ?

I'm playing Xenogears right now, hopefully this time I'll finish. Yes, I know, immensely LTTP.

I want to finish my second playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles which I'm doing on emulation, but the instability, particularly of the sound, has been a significant deterrent.

I'm about 5 hours into The Last Story. Does the combat ever really "click" and make more sense like it did in Xenoblade? I just feel like a bumbling idiot most of the time, hiding behind walls and slashing repeatedly.

funny to see Breath of Fire III mentioned. i decided to take it from my old pile of shame and give it another go. already ran into a few annoying sections like
the stealth section
. this game has a high encounter rate, higher than most hardcore games of today. when fights go by fast it doesn't matter, but sometimes you run into 3 fire slugs that love to fire breath you for 10 seconds each before you can act. that's what i hate the most. other than that, i was surprised how cruel the first 10 hours or so were on the main party. there is some terrible shit going on. i also got murdered in a dungeon when i decided to take weak onion with me. lost 30 minutes that way because there was no save point at the end. sometimes i forget games liked to do that.

love the sprite artwork and how the devs weren't afraid to use some color. the game is good, but it could have been so much more if they respected the time of their audience a bit more. i hate even minor puzzles when you get disturbed by random encounters. that's a no go, no matter which time period.

i will finish it this time.

Just finished FF VII for the first time yesterday. Fucking loved it. Before this, I had only played half of FF X and couldn't complete it because I figured out the mana mechanics pretty late into the game.

Not sure what I want to go for next. I could do P4 Golden, Dissidia 012, FF IX or Chrono Trigger. I've heard P4 is really long but amazing. I would probably prefer a shorter jrpg at this point though.

Advice?

played about 4 hours of Dream Team. i like the idea of it but its so slow and talky, getting Golden Sun flashbacks :/

picked up Valkyria Chronicles 2 in the EU PSN sale. cast is annoying, looks good though and plays ok so far (VC1 is one of my fav games this gen). having to press the Start button after each turn is a bit aggravating though as the Vita Start button is pretty awful.

Shin Megami Tensei IV. My first foray into the series.

I REALLY want to play P4G but I don't have a Vita (yet) so that will come with time. I'm just waiting for the system to be cheaper.

At the moment:

SMT: Soul Hackers

In various states of progress:

Xenoblade Chronicles
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
The Last Story (so close to completion)
Mother 3
Strange Journey (I think I'm giving up on this one)

Still playing Persona 3 and Valkyrie Profile 2 at the moment. When im on my psp im playing Trails in The Sky. All three games have been good to me so far. Trails feels like it needs to pick up the pace though but maybe its just cuz I have been doing as many side quests as I can.

Finished the first CD of Xenosaga Ep III

I'm on the hunt for a decently priced PS2 right now so I can finally play through Rogue Galaxy and Wild Arms 4. Hopefully I can find one in the next week or so.

Edit - oops, just realized this thread was a for JRPGs and not just general what are you playing. I just recently finished Pokémon Black 2 if that counts.

It is very slow... Besides talking to classmates and stuff, nothing happen. It isn't as open world as I thought.

How far are you in the game? The first 2.5 hours are pretty linear and mostly just dialogue scenes but then it starts to open up. There's still a lot of dialogue though.

Ni No Kuni.

I was trying to beat it before my copy of Tales of Xillia, but i got stuck and i think i need to level-up soooo much, that i'm kinda dreading the moment i turn on the PS3 :/

At the moment, I'm playing Radiant Historia. It's a good game, but it falls into the plague of walking 5 feet to read a cutscene, then walking 5 more feet to get another cutscene. Combat is unique, but it quickly becomes tedious due to controlling the same 3 party member for the majority of the game. I'm about 12 hours into it right now.

I just started playing Shin Megami Tensei 1 for the SNES. It's aged in some ways and the requirements for story progression are insanely hard to discover on your own, but it's fun once you get around to the real combat.

EDIT: I love the monster negotiation and fusion concept, I'll probably get into this series' later games.

SMT1 is the one RPG I think that would most benefit from a top to bottom DQ5/FF4 style remake. I was able to overlook all the interface issues to appreciate and love the core game, but a spruced up reworking with all of the modern Megaten amenities we get in terms of fusion and press turn would catapult this game into my all time favorite list for sure. As it stands, I still thought the game was too much fun.

I know Final Fantasy VII too well... Not even out of disc one and my party is nearing level 50, with level 4 limit breaks across the board.

I've been playing Final Fantasy 7 for the first time ( been playing it on and off for some months ).

Honestly I'm not really digging it. I just don't really like the world in this, I also feel like the game is very very slow in some parts that are not very interesting.

Is it possible that I will like FF 9 ? I prefer fantasy settings generally, and FF9 just seems to have a nice charm about it.

Honestly, if you think FF7 is slow, you'll hate the pacing in FF9. Its not so much that the story is poorly paced, its that the battles are absolutely glacial. by far the slowest battle system for a FF. It was painful the last time I played through it. However, if you dig fantasy settings, 9's world is top notch.

Still playing Tales of Graces F. I have already clocked around 65 hours and just started chapter 8. By the looks of things looks like i'm almost at the end of the game.

Finished Dragon's Crown as the Elf, if that counts. I'm going to start Tales of Xillia tomorrow.

Picked up Dragon's Crown yesterday and just started as the Elf my own self.

Also playing Persona 3 Portable. Two hours in and I'm already in love with Mitsuru.

Replaying Panzer Dragoon Saga. It's totally brilliant. I spent 15-20 minutes just gushing about the design of a particular boss fight (end of disc 2 stuff) to some friends earlier.

finally working on my backlog and tackling persona 4.

To be honest, i didn't want to get into it because it was a random dungeon crawler, but i didnt realize fighting is actually fun. Thanks to fast load times, speeding up the battles by pressing triangle, and the persona system is pretty awesome.

i'm about 20 hours in

I picked up a Wii U Pro Controller and started up Earthbound this weekend. It is as charming as I remember.

I've actually finished a bunch of RPGs this year (Persona 4 Golden, Yakuza 5, Demon Souls, Ni No Kuni) after taking a break from the genre. I've also been meaning to start up Dragon Quest 7 but I'm hoping the 3DS version gets translated.

Still playing Tales of Graces F. I have already clocked around 65 hours and just started chapter 8. By the looks of things looks like i'm almost at the end of the game.

Some people seem to blast through, but I was about 60 or 70 hours by the end of the game. And, after all the extra stuff, and the Lineage and Legacies post-game ark, I got to the 90 hour mark. Graces is packed full of stuff to do and skits to see. I still have to do the post-game dungeon and I have one Valkines Dragon to beat.

As for right now, I'm playing Tales of Xillia. Loving the anime vibe.

I just tried the M&L4 demo on 3DS, and was floored by how good the music was and how addicting the battles were. I had no idea Shimomura composed for these games.

Putting aside Vesperia and Kiseki 3rd for a while I went right out and found a copy of RPG1 on GBA, and have 2 and 3 on order. I'm definitely having a lot of fun and the bosses seem pretty clever so far. Getting pre-emptive strikes is kind of frustrating though :P
