what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Played some more FF Legend 3 this weekend, now up to the Underworld. Feels like I'm getting to the home stretch... but generally with oldskool RPGs that means lots of dungeoneering and constant barrages of challenging enemy encounters.

Biding time before DQ7 drops by playing Echoes of Aetheria.
Cool little RPG Maker game from the devs of Skyborn.
It's more than decent, unsurprisingly, but has the same problem Skyborn had - too easy on normal, too difficult on hard. :\

Got PS Now for my PC. There's a lot of good Jrpgs that were only on PS3. Playing Eternal Sonata, haven't played it in 8 years on the 360 so I barley remember it (only got about half way). Really enjoying it, love the art style and the story seems pretty mature. The music is excellent, as it should be because the games theme centers around music. The dub is decent too. I really wish I could play it as PC port it would look so much better. PS Now is mostly smooth but there was a few hiccups but it's playable for the most part.

Plan on checking out Ni no Kuni and Trails of cold steel as well.

I was playing through that one earlier this year actually but stopped when Fire Emblem Fates came out, I should probably go back to it. Hope the second half isn't as bad as most people claim.

How are Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Cyber Sleuth in the highest difficulty settings?

I don't know about TMS, but Cyber Sleuth hard mode is totally bollocks, they just boosted enemy HP and Speed massively and called it a day.

I started it at hard initially but switched to normal eventually because it really wasn't fun.

The Hyperdimension Neptunia series on PC. Got all 7 of them and currently playing them back to back. I'm currently on Re;birth 3.

Final battle in Final Fantasy Legend 3. I liked the game, but not as much as the other 2 FFL games. It's grindy, with a high encounter rate, a bit punishing (though difficulty definitely drops when you get access to spells that hit all enemies at once), the story is very confusing, there are a lot of times where the game doesn't lead you very well what to do next, and the Equip screen UI is a nightmare.

But overall I enjoyed it. You go to a variety of areas, the enemy design is fantastic (some of the best looking GB graphics), some of the music is catchy, and it doesn't have some of the more arcane elements of the first 2 FFL games (such as breakable weapons). I like the breezy, pick up and play nature of oldskool 8 bit games, where you have to do resource management to survive and story/cutscenes are kept at a minimum (and you don't spend hours just wandering around a huge town).

Will beat it tomorrow since my friend is coming over and he wanted to see me do it.

Trying so hard to finish Tokyo Mirage Session on Wii U but fuck me it's so hard to play JRPGs on that console. I can't afford a Pro U Controller.

Though the gamepad implementation is actually used pretty damn well.

Wish I could remote play it with Vita.

I don't understand all the hype the Legend of Heroes games get. I haven't played them myself but I'm very wary:

-Characters/world look ultra generic.
-Game seems to be overstuffed with dialogue
-Said dialogue/story/characters seem to be anime trope after anime trope, cliche after cliche
-Long and grindy and paced to match

These are my outside observations, but as someone who finds generic anime archetypes and cliches to be abhorrent I'd love to read an argument that convinces me that the series is worth my time. The praise that the battle system gets has me intrigued.

I like weird, creative or goofy stuff and challenging battle systems. Not a fan of overabundant talking heads/enemy encounters. Definitely not a fan of melodrama unless it's so over the top that it borders on satire.

I started Trails in the Sky recently and after about ten hours, I am not quite as bought into it largely in that it has been somewhat plodding in its world building and characterization, but the writing does come across as more genuine and natural in most cases than most typical jRPG's. Yes, there are occasional anime tropes and forced jokes dealing with relationship building and personality quirks, but there is also confidence on behalf of what the writers are intending between those moments that stick out stronger. Even the first town is so dense with evolving dialogue with every progression step from all NPC's that it is understandable how one could get lost in this adventure and setting absorbing whatever amount it has to offer at any real pace.

Combat is stronger than most jRPG's in that enemies thus far have demanded a bit more concentration than typical auto-battle fodder of other games. Lots of experimentation and skill customization that doesn't demand 'perfect' builds as it really is up to the player to mix and match how they see fit with little consequence. Though this also means that due to the number of encounters(that you don't choose to avoid) en route through dungeons or fields can bloat the playtime and weigh down the pacing, but playing casual sessions as I have helps keep the malaise at bay somewhat.

If games like Lunar or Grandia ever evoked much appreciation, this will also fit into that wheelhouse. I feel a bit aged now to really find this sort of game to strike as heavy a chord as other fans, but it is no less charming an experience as its forebears. But yes, motivation is required on behalf of the player to slink into its particular design.

I randomly popped Final Fantasy Tactics A2 into my 3DS a couple of weeks ago and have been obsessed. I only got maybe 25% of the way through it years ago even though I enjoyed it. I'm getting close to where I left off back then now and determined to finish it.

Unfortunately the story is lame (although some of the side stories are interesting or funny) but the battles, the looting, the leveling/job system, team building etc are so, so good.

I only wish they tightened up the menus so I could go to one menu that was sort of a combination of the "Unit" menu, the Bazaar, and the Fitting Room so I could manage all aspects of the units in my squad in one place. I feel like I'm constantly going back and forth between the Fitting Room and Unit menu to figure out what I have, what I need next in planning my build, buying what I need, and changing abilities and classes.

Getting new loot items and seeing I can unlock something new in the Bazaar is so satisfying!

The game is also pretty easy, but you do still have to plan and think about what you are doing going into and during battles. It keeps me on my toes just enough to keep me engaged, but isn't such a cerebral logic exercise that I get overwhelmed.

Looking forward to finishing this one, and then I am determined to finish SMT IV.

Just fought a boss in Shadow Hearts Covenant
Rasputin
that easily could have been the final boss if not for the game having a disc 2
and Nicolai still being around.

Trails of Cold Steel 2, of course.

Also took some time to platinum Dragon Quest Heroes. Terry and Bianca are 2 gud. Yangus too. My main party. Really hope we get the sequel.

I beat Tales of Hearts r. The story wasn't great to begin with but I felt that it fell apart in the end. Exploring and fighting was fun. A decent game and I enjoyed most of my time with it.

How many JRPGs do you folks juggle at a time?

Usually two max, but some times you just feel like juggling a ton. I'm currently playing Dragon Quest VII and Stella Glow, hopefully getting Cold Steel 2 next week and Cosmic Star Heroine should be out soon-ish too, which I'm planning on getting day one.

How many JRPGs do you folks juggle at a time?

Tons. Tales of Berseria and Persona 5 active right now. On hold/If I feel like it: Bravely Second, SMT Nocturne, SMT IV Final, SMT IV neutral route, original NieR, Star Ocean 5, FFX and a bunch that I completely forgot about. Haven't touched Nocturne, SMTIV and NieR for a while. The list will definitely pile up when FFXV, NieR Automata, and more stuff releases :( Been trying to beat some of them for newer releases, but not going great.

I did beat #FE recently (had no way to play it since January) so that's an accomplishment.

I'm diving into DQVII on 3DS today! Cant wait to pick it up after work. Currently just started Persona 3 FES on PS3, will then play Persona 4 Golden on the Vita in prep for the NA release of Persona 5.

I want to start up the Trails games soon too with FC & SC followed by CS I&II.

Speaking of which - what is the best way to play Trails in the Sky FC and SC? Is it better on PC or on Vita? I wish I could play it on my TV with the Steam Link streaming, but it wont work for me via the streaming method and even if it did, I cant get a 360 controller to play nice with the game on PC. I am tempted by the vita, but Id like a bigger screen I think. I cant decide - is one version superior to the other? It was originally developed on PC right?

Playing some of that y's origins on steam big picture mode. Just kicking back damn.. I'm at work right now all fantasising n shit.

Thanks for all the answers :)

I usually do one at a time, currently it's Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, but I also wanted to start Persona 3 (I beat P4G already) or Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2 (short one).

Cannot wait for World of Final Fantasy on Vita. Stoked!

I usually stick to one game at a time in general, but I've been overindulging a bit lately. I currently have Dragon Quest VII and soon SMT IV: Apocalypse as my main games until I finish them, Devil Survivor, Soul Hackers, Genealogy of the Holy War and Final Fantasy Tactics in the backburner just waiting for me to go back to them.

Generally I'll do one console, and one handheld.

If I'm nearing the end of one (or just doing postgame dicking around), and I have like a whole weekend free I'll start a second one before completely wrapping up a first one.

2-3. One console, one handheld usually. And maybe one more that i can half pay attention to while watching stuff.

Great idea.
Will keep playing Tokyo Mirage on Wii U and start Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2 for Vita.

Was playing Popolocrois on the PSP, got 3.5 hrs in when the slow random battles got to me. It's a charming setting and story, with some funny NPC dialogue, but I'm dropping this one.

People, im in a bind.

A year back I played Trails in the Sky FC and SC and fell in love. It was such an amazing journey and for a long time it has left me satisfied. But to fill this void for an amazing JRPG journey I have not been able to find a game that replicated those sentiments for me.

I tried Suikoden 2 and Star Ocean Second Evolution but neither of them hooked me like Trails in the Sky. Suikoden 2 was a great game but I couldn't finish it because my save got corrupted fairly far into the game. Star Ocean had great characterisation but the battle system didn't hook me.

If anybody could recommend where I should turn to, I would be grateful.

The best thing I liked about Trails was the adventure feel. The lead was refreshing and lovable. Music while not amazing but did fit the mood. But the cast of characters and their dynamics was something that I think really holds up. After the credits rolled I wanted another grand adventure with the characters I grew to know and like.

Have you played Trails of Cold Steel? they (part I & II) were just localized and released in NA relatively recently, although I don't know where in the world you are located. If you liked FC & SC, I believe the natural progression is into Trails of Cold Steel as it is the same world.

What platform did you play FC & SC on? Im about to start my play through and am looking for advice on whether I should get it for my Vita or PC?

Reminds me of when I finished P4G...

I am still looking for that feeling.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions is pretty damn good but Persona 5 can't come soon enough.

Trails of Cold Steel?

Although I will say CS does not replicate that adventure feeling you're talking about due to different circumstances.

I'm about 11 hours in to Tales of Zestiria. This is my first tales title and I'm really enjoying it, even if I'm still not 100% sure if I know what I'm doing in combat.

Good cast of characters and an interesting plot so far. Combat is fast and fun but I'm still getting to grips with it.

You could try Grandia, I think it has an atmosphere similar to Tits in some ways. (It's more similar to FC than SC, tho'.)

Lunar 1 and 2 too, I guess? Yeah, give them a try.

How many JRPGs do you folks juggle at a time?

Always two, generally one on portable one on PC/Console... well, it's more like, I always play two games at the same times, more than anything.

I'm juggling a few at the moment. DQV, DQVII, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions. At first I wasn't digging TMS, but after playing a bit I'm absolutely loving the weapons triangle from Fire Emblem and the weaknesses from SMT. Enjoying the shit out of it.

Just bought Dragon Quest VII for my 3DS today. So I'll probably be juggling that with Shadow Hearts Covenant. DQ7 for bus and school, SH:C for home.

Earthbound and Grandia are the ultimate kids going on adventure games.

Lunar 1 and 2 for PS2 if you want the character interactions. They have chemistry, fun personalities, and respond to every single thing the people in the towns say.

A Dragon Quest if you want a game with the slow pace of Trails games. Every DQ is also a massive adventure. DQ7 just came out and is great.

Finished Trails of Cold Steel II.

Got SMT IV: Apocalypse early so I'm starting that next. Whew.. from one great JRPG to another (from what I'm hearing). SMT IV is my favorite 3DS game, really excited for this.

I was playing 7th Dragon 2020 and Trails in the Sky SC, but i've been playing a lot of PSO 2 lately. Once the event dies down I'll probably buckle down on my SP experiences again.

I haven't and I want to but I sadly sold my ps3 and never had a vita. Unless I get one of those, im out of luck.

I played it on PC and I never had any problems but I believe vita is the better version from what I've seen.

I put #FE on hold to return to Cold Steel 1 now 2's available. Both cracking games, but it feels good to be continuing my journey through the school year/Erebonia. Game's huge though, currently at 50 hours and part-way through chapter 5, with I gather a fair way to go. If CS2 is similar then I won't be helping to save Tokyo through Song for quite some time...

Grandia, should I start from the first one?

I just checked Lunar Silver Star Harmony, looks really good.

I think Trails of Cold Steel is right up my alley but don't have a ps3 or vita right now.

P4G was pretty amazing.

Grandia, should I start from the first one?

I just checked Lunar Silver Star Harmony, looks really good.

I haven't played the Harmony version but I've heard complaints about it compared to PS1. No world map, loading time, screen transitions interrupt the music, a worse translation.

For Grandia, I might be in the minority, but I would say start with the first one and just play the first one. I couldn't get into the characters and story of the second.
