what jrpg are you playing right now ?

How did you like Raidou? Been looking for a good JRPG to play since Persona got knocked out of 2016 and FFXV was delayed again. Haven't touched my PS3 in awhile. (It's been having problems with connecting to the network for some reason.

I thought it was pretty great! I always liked the art direction, music, and general style of the game, but it didn't convince me at first because the combat felt way too simple and easy. But I went back to it eventually and had a lot of fun. Combat gets some depth eventually and while fusions are annoyingly restrictive, I still had fun with that. I enjoyed the game so much I ended up going for all secret bosses and all that.

Story was serviceable for the most part but got pretty crazy near the end, that was a cool surprise. I would have jumped into Raidou 2 right after but I don't want to get burned out and I'm trying to clear my SMT backlog before Apocalypse comes out anyway.

Finished Star Ocean 5, found it awful. Graphics are kinda bad, story isnt nothing to remember, and its made to be replayed several times.

Finished the game without any rush under 18 hours.

Think I'll finally start Valkyria Chronicles Remastered.

Trying to get through FF7 but I think I took too long a break because I can't seem to get back into it. Just got to Temple of the Ancients and end up quitting after 20 mins of play

Finally got a full party in BoF2, game became much more enjoyable now, even if the encounter rate still high.

It's really a huge improvement over BoF1, pretty much everything it's better. The script is also pretty good, the fan translator really did an excellent job.

Phantasy Star II

Not sure why people say this game is boring. I sort of like how unforgiving it can be (for now, at least). Just getting through areas with standard enemies can be difficult; but the combat can move pretty fast for a 1989 JRPG, which helps.

The fact that the enemies don't show up in backgrounds that resemble the area you are in is probably the worst thing about it, especially considering how it was a key feature of the first one.

It's a great game. I loved XIII-2 too. Lightning Returns was ruined by the time limit thing, though. I might go back and play it on PC with "cheats."

Its always nice to see people who enjoy the game. Its such a bummer that its disliked by majority of the community. I mean, I understand why they might not like it, but for the most part I think the hate is a little overblown.

I'm playing Rogue Galaxy at the moment and just find the dialogue and combat terrible. The characters are terrible JRPG tropes in action.

...Very few JRPGs have writing on that level.

Preach it!

As an aside, I forgot just how great the actual gameplay is. They really created something quite unique in terms of SRPG gameplay. Almost perfectly balanced too. Lots of little details.

That's all I ever expect out of Level 5.

Tales of Zestiria

I'm really digging it so far, I think I am 50% in. Its not Vesperia levels of greatness or anything but its at least way better than Abyss.

Rose > Alisha

Still playing

Tales of the Abyss
Star Ocean Til the End of Time
Final Fantasy XII
And Yakuza 1 on ps2

Er, I think I should stop trying to play so many at once... ;X

The time limit can seem intimidating at first, but you actually have more than enough time to do everything in the game. In fact, I had three in-game days left but ran out things to do so I just skipped to the last day and finished the game.

I picked up cheap copies of FFX and FFVIII for my ps2. Still fairly early into both but I'm enjoying them. I put down FFXII for a bit, last time I played it was when it first released. I feel that my opinion of it may decrease a bit after I go back to complete it, we'll see.

Thanks. I'll give it another try soon.

Kingdom Hearts 2 HD. First time playing critical mode, but third time thru game since ps2. It's everything people said it was and more! Feels like a totally different game. It's got me focused on my entire move set and the combat is really coming to life compared to original release. I'm 22 hours in and am about halfway through. The amount of added content is amazing.

I am also skipping almost all the story. I used to watch the Disney cutscenes but now I only focus on main story and Org XIII stuff. Kinda dig the mind warped sci fi plot elements.

Just bailed out of SMT: Strange Journey. After 16 hours stuckin
Delphinus
I am sick of not making any progress and checking every wall for a hidden door.

The demon fusing isn't as fun as Persona 3 or 4 to me due to pigeon-holing yourself to the demons with the same alignment, and ultimately I just decided to move on, disappointed.

Going back to finish Fire Emblem: Conquest now though

Xenoblade Chronicles X and I kind of hate it.

I feel like I've put in five hours or more, and I'm still stuck in the beginning where you need to discover 15% of the map to continue.

Someone please tell me it gets better?

A lot of people are turned off by the extremely large dungeons and focus on resource management the game has (as well as the mandatory grinding in certain sections...). Personally, it's my favorite RPG of all time (with the offline PS series being my favorite game series of all time). Love the story, setting, music and yeah I do love those ridiculously obtuse dungeon designs.

Trails of Cold Steel 2. Have barely put it down since I started. The legend of heroes series might be one of the greatest JRPG series OF ALL TIMEEEE.

Playing Shin Megami Tensei IV, almost finished with the neutral route. The story lost a lot of steam and lacks any kind of impact by the end, but the gameplay is pretty good and addicting especially demon fusion.

After finishing it, I'm torn between playing the PS1 Popolocrois games (1, Epilogue, 2) or wait for DQ7 next week and play that first.

Recently been going hard on the old school JRPGs for want of something that's actually good.

Finished EarthBound and Mother 3 back to back. Amazing.

Working on wrapping up Suikoden, will follow up with Suikoden II shortly after. Suikoden 1 is fine and all but it feels pretty crusty and I really do not care about the boring story or boring characters. It's been slow going, I don't get the hype for this one. Chrono Cross is the better game if you like collecting tons of party members you'll never use.

Also started Lufia II on SNES.

Thinking of starting Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Still need to finish P3 and P4G, those games are soooo loooong and I kind of lost momentum.

Also eyeballing DQVII on 3DS, as well as SMTIVA.

Other JRPGs I bought because they were on sale for cheap but haven't gotten around to yet:

Wild Arms 1 and 2
Persona 2
SMT Nocturne (played a few hours like two years ago)
Digital Devil Saga
Etrian Odyssey IV
Alundra
Tactics Ogre LUCT
Breath of Fire IV

I'm the worst!!!!

Still looking to acquire a new PS2 so I can play Breath of Fire V and Shadow Hearts 1 and 2. Really wish they'd release those as PS2 Classics...

Already 10 hours into Trails of Cold Steel 2 and it just came out yesterday. Few games can keep me this entertained. ty xseed

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Return to PoPoLoCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale

but I'm back in school now so my free time just took a nosedive. this week is probably the last week I can put in some decent gaming time D:

and freaking DQVII and SMTIVA are out this month. WHAT DO I DO

DQVII is only 120+ hours. I'm sure you'll have that done in no time.

Been playing Bravely Second for almost 5 hours total. Story is kinda weird? Like everything comes and go out of nowhere lol.

Love it so far, and I'm still in the Prologue chapter apparently. A pretty damn long Prologue.

I started Trails in the Sky FC a few weeks ago, and played through the prologue and a bit of first chapter. Was surprised with how the NPC dialogue changes after every event, and how much the NPCs talk. But overall, I found the beginning boring, and the combat system was extremely mind numbing. I might give the game another go next year, but for now, I've dropped it.

Started FFX-2 HD two days ago, and I've wasted both days just on the monster arena lol. It's a great meta-game. I'll start the rest of the game once I get the monsters to level 99 and get as far in the arena as possible.

Earlier tonight I beat Chrono Trigger for the first time. I had started that game like 7 times over the years and always petered out, but this time I stuck with it. Turns out that's a good video game.

I had minor complaints here and there with the UI and the overworld and stuff, but as a whole I really enjoyed it and I'm glad it finally clicked with me.

So now I'm eyeing Chrono Cross because I can't wait to see the continuing adventures of Crono and crew!

FFX HD. Been playing this with my wife. We are 82hrs in trying to 100% the game. Just got chocobo catcher 0.00 (that was bruuutal) and the butterfly game finally. Absolutely loving it. For both of us, this is our favourite game soundtrack of all time. Just magical.

I"m currently playing the classic (to me atleast) Digimon World: Dawn. I've owned this game for nearly a decade and I still never get tired of playing it. My only real problems with it are:

1. There isn't much to do after beating the main storyline

2. DNA Digivolution is... annoying, to say the least

3. Since Wi-Fi is gone, I can't do the Legendary Tamer quest. Chronomon!!!! T_T

Even with those issues, it is still my favorite DS game.

Trails of Cold Steel. After buying part 2, I've decided to try and catch up a little.
No way I'd get very far before Dragon Quest VII hits. :(

Off and on Tales of Zestiria too, for the heck of it.

Does Earthlock: Festival of Magic count? i think it was made by a Norwegian development team (not 100% sure) but its a jrpg at heart and im absolutely loving it so far.

I should be taking a serious break from jrpg's after 78 hours of Persona 4 Golden, but yesterday I caught myself playing Shin Megami Tensei IV in a waiting room. And I really don't like the game. From a complete mess of cluttered menus instead of doing simpler and easier to understand, to that super zoomed in perspective where it feels as if you were looking though a small hole.

It's not only the huge difference with the last thing I played (P4G), but also feels like a huge stepdown compared to SMT3. A First person Dungeon crawler like Strange Journey would have worked better.

The composer just uploaded this soundtrack to YouTube, which popped up in my subscriptions. I don't know anything about this game, but it piqued my curiosity.

Im going to pick up the first ToCS this weekend and will juggle between it and SMTNocturne....the praise these games get...I'm finally getting on board.

I don't understand all the hype the Legend of Heroes games get. I haven't played them myself but I'm very wary:

-Characters/world look ultra generic.
-Game seems to be overstuffed with dialogue
-Said dialogue/story/characters seem to be anime trope after anime trope, cliche after cliche
-Long and grindy and paced to match

These are my outside observations, but as someone who finds generic anime archetypes and cliches to be abhorrent I'd love to read an argument that convinces me that the series is worth my time. The praise that the battle system gets has me intrigued.

I like weird, creative or goofy stuff and challenging battle systems. Not a fan of overabundant talking heads/enemy encounters. Definitely not a fan of melodrama unless it's so over the top that it borders on satire.

Just started Final Fantasy IV (PSP) for the first time after beating Dragon Quest III (SNES).

Man... Catching up with both franchises has made me realize Dragon Quest is a hell of a franchise. I love FFV, and to a lesser extent I and VI, but DQ 1-3 are much more solid than FFI-III.

It's mostly well done storytelling that develops something interesting for the most part. The greatest strength of the series is contained within how consistent and well defined the setting is. Trails of Cold Steel is also notable for having a superb combat system and by and large is not "grindy". In a certain light, tropes disentegrate when you have different character dynamics, which the series also utilizes extremely well. By and large the tropes are what build these dynamics but the dynamics are what tends to make everyone interesting to the audience. The dialogue while hefty, is also dense with detail and isn't terribly repetitive, it's usually some new development each time and the dialogue itself is rather enjoyable to read through by itself thanks to an excellent localization by XSEED.

Just started Magna Carta 2, although technically it's a KRPG rather than a JRPG.

Very generic story opening (main character has amnesia) but seems well made, looks nice and runs very smoothly.

Been playing through FFVI the past week. First time since I was like 10. This game is even more awesome than I remember it. Just got to the WoR a little bit ago and I'm loving it more and more.
