what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Almost done with BoFII, the game would have been 10x more enjoyable if you could switch party members on the fly.

Also, I got the "airship" and it's like 10x slower than the Bird. Everything in this game seems to be designed to slow you down. Fuck you!

I was in a Dreamcast mood over the weekend and decided to give Skies Of Arcadia a spin. Never gave it a shot back in the day, and after all these years... that game kind of sucks ass.

The encounter rate in the overworld is stupid high, which wouldn't be so bad if the battles were quick, but they're not. I found myself finishing one and being confused about where the hell it was I was flying to next, wandering around aimlessly to get my bearings, only to get into another shitty random battle. This heavily discouraged me from exploring the map, which is contrary to the game's intention. They reward you for finding landmarks for crying out loud. I was not having fun, and I don't see myself going back to it.

Digital Devil Saga update:
Why can't all games be like this? Great gameplay AND great story. The only issue I have had so far with this game is that sometimes it doesn't let you play the way you like. I had to grind for about an hour to get one of those Expel spells to beat a boss (
Jinnana
). As I said the gameplay is really nice so, I wasn't bored or anything, but I wish it would just let me play the way I want. I wasn't underlevelled or anything, I needed one specific spell.

You can play these aaaaaaaaaaaaany way you want. You, in Megaten games, keep the burden of those choices.

Yeah, seems like this game has not aged well at all. Never played it myself, but always wanted to. Impressions like yours have been steering me clear.

The GC version has lower encounter rate, if you are interested.

I don't think SoA gets very good until the second half anyway.

Ironically, since I was late to the party I had the choice of version to pick up. I chose the Dreamcast thinking to myself "I'm an old school gamer, I can take it." I was wrong.

I hate the fact I'm discouraging people from checking out a game, but it really is a chore. Maybe try the Gamecube version like Taruranto suggested.

Currently playing Legends of Heros: Trails of Cold Steel I and Dragon Quest IX (my first DQ). I know these are both long games, but with it's working for me. Switching frequently is keeping me from getting bored.

Finally got my copy of Cold Steel 2, so now I'll be jumping between that and DQ VII.

After these, I think I'm gonna play DQ VIII and IX.

Been playing Persona 5, reached 45 hour mark.

Can't remember last time I was enjoying JRPG this much. Probably back when I was playing Persona 4 on my PS2?

Persona 4G
Wild Arms 2
Yakuza 5

Loving each of them. Can't wait to play P5 and Yakuza 0 and 6, if we ever get it in the West.

How's Wild Arms 3? Should I play it after WA2?

It's been a while since I played Wild Arms 3 but I remember really liking it. There is something about its visual presentation that really impressed me. I can't put my finger on it. I think it's just the combination of little things in cutscenes like the camera angles and the character animations that sets it apart from other games at the time. It also has this weird thing where you have to find towns and dungeons on the world map by pinging the area. You can literally be standing in the exact spot where a town is but you'll never enter if you don't send out the search ping. Once you find it it's there for good. Other than that it's a cool game like the others in the series.

I also just started Yakuza 5. I should play more Yakuza games, they're freakin' amazing.

Odin Sphere. Going through Velvet's campaign and some of the mini bosses turned downrigh tmurderous with her moveset when compared to other characters.

Just finished P4G the other day...True Ending...wow...

I moved right into Trails of Cold Steel, and the similarities are pretty stunning so far, even in the first 2 hours. School, relationships, managing time in free days. I really am digging the combat system in Trails so far though...much more dynamic than P4G.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius on iOS. It's so much fun and has a pretty great main-line story, if super cringey dialogue. The meta game / freemium build is fun as well and gives it a nice long lifespan.

Yeah, Yakuza is an awesome series. Some of my friends were turned off by it at first because they were expecting a gta style game but when I told them to look at it as a classic jrpg with a brawler battle system it seemed to click for them. I'm slowing convincing everyone I know to grab yakuza 0 so we have a better chance of getting 6 localized . These games deserve so much more love. Fuck, most people on my friends list have played Dragon Age Inquisition (uugh) but barely any have played any of the yakuza games and 4 was free on psn . Sega really missed an opportunity to grow this series in the west when Ps4 launched. They should have localized ishin when there were no games on Ps4 and everyone was dying to play something new

Currently focusing on playing through the Breath of Fire series, I'm on 2. Also playing Persona 3 FES, and have a few on hold at what I'd consider the end of their intro/prologue, or good stopping points halfway through: Wild Arms 1, Digital Devil Saga 1, Kingdom Hearts 2 and Trails in the Sky FC.

Other than JRPGs I'm playing Witcher 3 after playing through 1 and 2, and also playing a good amount of Overwatch.

Finally finished BoF2... man, the final dungeon alone took me whole yesterday and today. =_=

A massive slog with encounter every 5 feets. At least the final boss ended up being easier than I expected. Lin and Deis were faster than him, so healing wasn't too bad. Mostly it was a matter of spamming Kaiser Dragon before he used the MP drain move.

I gave up on Persona Q.
The gameplay is good, but there is almost nothing else to this game and that just isn't enough for me to keep playing.

Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii U (Wii VC) and my favorite game of all time: Final Fantasy IX HD on iPad.

I'm still doubting if I should get Xenoblade on 3DS.

Do I want to buy a Playstation TV and P4G or should I buy dark souls 3?

Have not played persona, but keep hearing how great it is. I'm a big fan of the souls series , and have somehow managed to avoid reading or watching anything about Dark Souls 3 because I was waiting for the price to come down.

I can finally fly on the world map in Ni No Kuni. Trying to find as many treasure chests as possible and also trying to do side quests. Doing really well so far. One of three guardians down, which gave me the Sun Stone. I also want to try my hand at the arena. Got wrecked a few hours ago. Hopefully, I have a team that can fare batter.

In Digimon: Cyber Sleuth, I reached chapter 2. The game is building up the story but it's fairly slow at the moment. Solved the first case the game throws at you, buying beans. I can finally move more freely in the game world. The game basically feels like SMT: Digimon.

I got the PSTV for exactly that reason and I had (and still have) a really hard time getting into Persona 4 Golden. I may have to give up on it, as I think I was at 10-12 hours before I stopped (which is a thing I never really do anyway).

I'm not certain where I fall in the casual/die-hard JRPG spectrum, but Chrono Trigger and FFVI are tied as my #1 game of all-time. I've played all the FFs and thought Ni no Kuni was pretty good. I owned and finished Wild Arms and Suikoden back on the PSOne.

I want to like it, but maybe it's the setting? :\

An ARPG in Phantasy Star Nova. It's pretty enjoyable, despite soloing the whole thing. And the translation guide in addition to menus that aren't too difficult makes the whole thing less of a hassle than other import games. I feel like I'm missing out on some of the call backs with the monsters considering I haven't played PSO in so long, and never really got into it until it was too late.

I'm also attempting to play Minstrel SaGa. Holy fuck is that game obtuse. They all are, but it's the closest one to a normal JRPG system. I thought I could hang but I guess not. If anyone plays these games on the regular, gimme some tips.

Playing Tales of Zestiria.
Just save scum my way through water temple, not a pleasant experience

I just got there myself, fucking annoying!

Other than that, i'm loving the game, put just over 20 horus in to it so far and unless something happens (like a difficulty curve, or more places like the one we're on about) I think this might be one of the few JRPGs I actually finish!

Running through Suikoden II at the moment. Just had a craving for some True Rune RPG fun. If I'm still in the mood for more, I'll probably jump over to Suikoden V. Not in the mood to play S3 as much as I liked the characters, and I'm not touching S4 with a ten foot pole. But Suikoden V had great story, so it's a worthwhile replay.

Are there any jrpgs that have a similar art style to something like Wings of Honneamise?

Arc the Lad 1&2 feel close to this. They have that "familiar, yet different world" feel that Wings had. It seems somewhat similar to Earth but things are just a little off. Technology wise it feels similar to 20th century Earth. Each region in Arc has it's own look, and some of the religious mysticism in Arc reminds me of WoH. Not sure if I can find a pic to convey it best but Arc the Lad 1&2 are the two that immediately remind me of Wings Of Honneameise.

rotating between Wild Arms 3, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse and Dragon Quest VII like a crazy person

I was also just given Mario & Luigi Paper Jam as a gift but I'm not even gonna bother touching that one for a while.

Dragon Quest VII

It's so good that I'm actually hoping it keeps going like this for 100h, it's just a blast to explore and take everything slowly

I finished the PS2 remake of Phantasy Star (Phantasy Star Generation I) a few days ago. It's overall a big improvement over the original Master System game, though the random encounter rate will still make you tear your hair out. The new music isn't bad but it's also not really great either. I prefer the original chiptunes.

Last night I started on Dragon Quest VII for 3DS and I'm loving it so far. It's one of the last DQ's I still hadn't played yet. The story and characters are interesting, and I'm really excited to dig deep into the job system. I'm still too early in the game though and haven't even encountered my first battle yet.

Finished Trails of Cold Steel 2 a few days ago. Amazing game; probably my favorite of the localized Trails games yet.

With that done, moved onto Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. Really great game too, though I loved the first SMTIV, so I guess that's to be expected lol. Went for a Dex run this playthrough; I love shooting things to death.

It didn't feel generic to me because I can't think of another RPG I played where I was leading and building my own army. Also the core of the main cast all being over 25 made it feel unusually mature for a jrpg. How do you feel about Wild Arms? That's the game I found very generic, and slow (battles are in slow motion), and ugly. (Even when it came out, that 3D did not look good)

Of course you wouldn't get all the characters on your own. I've never gotten close to them all and I've replayed it many times. So what? It's not a big deal. I hope you didn't use a guide. The main fun comes from finding characters on your own.

Wild Arms has shit battles, yeah. The encounter rate is mercifully low, though. The way they do the beginning of the game is interesting. The puzzley dungeons are fun, the music is great. Not far enough yet to really say much else at this point.

I did use a guide about halfway through Suikoden 1 because I wanted to unlock the sidequest and characters in Suikoden 2 and had no intention of replaying the game for that. But the game wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything interesting outside the recruiting of a bunch of characters. The castle is cool on paper but getting around it to do stuff gets old. A lot of features of the game feel underused. There's not enough army battles, or those weird sparring matches. Not many pairings for Unite attacks, either.

I like Chrono Cross better when it comes to recruiting a big cast.

finishing up lufia 2. going to move on to some gba games, golden sun and mother 3. can't wait. not sure which to play first.

Mother 3. Just played it recently, masterful. You play EarthBound first?

Golden Sun is an acceptable game but very generic.

Nice selection. I'm currently playing Golden Sun, which I have played several times over the years, yet never once beat it. I must say the game looks uglier each year. Would have been great to have it on say N64, as the game is way too low res and there's too many enemy recolors and limited music. Game is still nice, though.
Mothe 3 is a timeless masterpiece. I say get to it.

PSTV + P4G

P4G is amazing and you should experience it. The PSTV also has a ton of other great RPGs between the three platforms it supports.

Dark Souls 3 will go on sale again.

Since the up coming Paper Mario game is depressing me, I'm replaying The Thousand Years Door.
This could take a while since I'm too busy prasing every small thing about the game.

I also started Fire Emblem Awakening.
It's a great game, but I don't think it has to be this punishing right from the start.

Mother 3. Just played it recently, masterful. You play EarthBound first?

Earthbound is one of my favorite games ever, never played anything else like it. I finally got around to obtaining the means to play some DS games, so I'm going to get to it.

Morther 3 it is. I'll play Golden Sun at a later date. Thanks for the input, all.

Arc the Lad is such a weird game for me. I finished it, but I remember absolutely zero things about it except for the ending sequence with the late-20th century architecture.

Like, I was checking a wiki entry about the game some time ago and I literally went "Who are the people? Did I actually play this game?" when they talked about the game story.

You should not play Golden Sun, that I can tell you.

First game's story was super generic and doesn't even conclude. I can't even remember much besides being on the run from empire with ragtag bunch and you had to seek out five elemental spirits around the world. Second one's is far better, but it is mostly a bunch of tragedy vignettes chocked full of brutal scenes of death and misery. First scene in the game involves genocide and people getting shot by firing squads. I think the only thing I remember well about the main story is arriving at the capitol city of the antagonists and
realizing everyone had been turned into monsters and nobody running the show was even human anymore. Many of the final battles took place in various homes, apartments, and normal everyday places was kinda creepy.
