what jrpg are you playing right now ?

I'm working through Xenoblade. So far the music is pretty good, battle mechanics are... mmorgpish... which translates to fairly boring for me personally. I've switched around my characters to try to keep it interesting, to no avail. Story is decent, areas are pretty great as are creature designs. But I'm feeling the fatigue beginning to set in after 50+ hours and only seemingly 2/3rds of the way through. I think to myself, goddamn, I beat Skyward Sword in much less time than this, and I felt like I was dragging my ass in that game.

Should I just be skipping all side quests and map-filling-ins at this point? Go right for the story (!) and screw the rest? Rah...

I started playing FF13-2 and was determined to actually complete the game. But, after reaching Academia 400AF, I just couldn't do it anymore, I'm done.

I'm working on a play through of Star Ocean: First Departure on PSP. First time playing it and I'm loving it, battle system is fast and fluid. I'm only about 6 hours in but early impressions are good.

I still have a lot of Jrpg's that I bought and need to open and play/finish (Xenoblade, Last Story, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, FF7 Crisis Core, BOF3, Star Ocean 2, Ni No Kuni). I don't know what to start when I finish Star Ocean, I guess I'll just jump right into SO2.

I would, after a while the side quests do tend to become a tad dull.

Just started Tales of Graces F a couple of days ago. So far i have been enoying the game quite a bit, but I'm still not very far.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 on my Vita. It is a beautiful and fun game. People were mad that it got released on the PSP and not the PS3 like the original but I would rather play any rpg on the go. It works great on the Vita!

Can't wait for the VC3 English fan translation.

I'm playing the Zelda Oracle games on my 3DS... If that counts as JRPGs.

Same here, finally got to playing it a couple days ago as well.

I unlocked Evil difficulty and I'm playing the game on that so things are going a bit slower than normal. My god the Barona Castle boss took me sooooooo many tries to get him down, so ridiculous. Once I unlock Chaos difficulty I'm not sure if I'll jump up to it. Maybe for normal enemies. At least you get more SP on higher difficulties so you'll progress through your titles really fast and I think you get more EXP too.

What jrpg am I not playing right now?

I just finished summon night 5 and 7th dragon 2020-II. Taking a small breather before mario & luigi IV and SMT IV hits the west.

I beat Tales of Graces f a couple of days ago. Pretty average story, the characters were a bit better in terms of likeability, but the combat made more than up for it. The combat just hits all the right spots.

Anyway, then I wanted to play something like Graces, so I bought Star Ocean: The Last Hope, bad decision. The combat is not nearly as good (In my mind), and the game has some awful voice acting, I played it for 2-3 hours and just stopped.

Then I decided to play Resonance of Fate, I'm only 2 hours in, but the combat and the world of Basel is really interesting. So long story short, Resonance of Fate for me at the moment.

Ni no Kuni. The pace is a little slower than what I'm used to. Going to play Breath of Fire 4 some time this year for their anniversary.

Etrian Odyssey 4 and loving it. I'm close to the end of the 3rd stratum, my guys haven't hit 40 yet though.

Before this was Soul Sacrifice, not really a JRPG but I surprisingly really liked the story in it. The battles could get a bit samey, but I liked the variety in spells and all the different boss types. After beating it I put it down, didn't really feel like I had to go through all the post-game non story stuff. I have a lot of trips coming up this summer and will probably play through a lot of those missions on a plane.

Before THAT was Fire Emblem Awakening. Really good game, convinced me the 3DS was worth owning after a year with nothing that interested me. It was the first FE I played too and now I'm definitely a fan of the series. It feels like a game I might go back to some day.

So yeah a lot of handheld stuff :V

Next up: I have the PSP remake of Persona 2 waiting on my Vita, but I dunno if I'll get around to that before SMT4 is out in July. After SMT4 there's the new Mario and Luigi in August, I really like those games. It's the real spiritual successor to Mario RPG, not the paper mario crap they put out on 3DS and Wii. In september Ys comes out on Vita, then Pokemon XY in October, and the FFX remake before the end of the year hopefully. Seems like it will be a good year for JRPGs.

I'm deep into NNK now, well into the post-game. I like it more the more I play it. I'm very surprised L5 managed to make an RPG this good, given their track record.

This is my issue. The soundtrack, graphics, art style, and enemy design are great...but the story is ok, and the characters themselves arent that interesting, nor is the battle system. I like MMORPG style battle systems, but only when i'm playing an MMO (was part of my issue with FFXII). I'm thinking about just starting Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean International, Last Story, Shadow Hearts 1 and 2, or restarting Valkyria. Dont want to start another retro RPG since i'm already playing Brainlord on SNES and not messing with another handheld until I finish Fire Emblem.

Trying to decide if I should start Persona 4 or Valkyria Chronicles. Just finished Persona 3 FES so I don't want to be burned out if Persona 4 is going to just be more of the same.

Valkyria. Going to P4 right after 3 might be a little repetitive, even though the games are pretty different story wise.

You were like the most hyped person for it on the whole forum though.

I don't think Xillia 2 is that long. It's actually shorter than Xillia 1 in terms of the main story.

Think im just gonna stick with Xenoblade... forgetting about all the sidequests really does help things move along. Also i've gotta say i'm now in the crowd that thinks it was overhyped. I'm glad it released in all regions, and its a good game, but no where near as good as what everyone made it out to be before the english release. Soundtrack is amazing though.

Atelier totori plus for vita, a very cute and charming game :)

I'm doing a juggling act between EO IV and Fire Emblem Awakening, although all of my attention is focused on Awakening at the moment. The bestest family needs all of my attention after all. <_>

I was worried about the same thing regarding Persona 3 and 4, but I waited a couple weeks after playing P3 then felt ready to tackle P4. Though I did end up playing P4 on easy because after P3's The Answer, I wanted to have to grind as little as possible and just see the story.

Though if you think you might get burned out from more Persona, Valkyria Chronicles is a great choice.

I'm playing Ni no Kuni at the moment, since i finally got the PS3 after all those years just for the game. Totally worth it. One epic RPG experience!

And later this year i gonna tackle Tales of Graces f and Xillia.
Almost too much RPG awesomeness to handle. :P

Gaf...

...I just beat Chrono Trigger...

It deserves its praise.
feels good.

Damn right, I was in the same place as you a few months ago. Honestly that game was perfect in literally every respect, and damn if that triumphant ending wasn't well earned.

Persona 3 Portable

I love it, even though I don't know what the fuck I'm doing most of the time.
Social links, after school activities and Tartarus? I have no idea how they work I'm just fumbling in the dark with it.

I really like Yukari as a character, but I always seem to get stuck doing stuff with Junpei...who is an asshole.
I went into Tartarus and cleared all the floors till I hit a roadblock, then for like the next month I couldn't do anything there except visit past floors....

But like I said, loving it.

Ni No Kuni has surpassed Tales Of Vesperia as the best JPRPG from this Gen. I would love a HD Dragon Quest VIII remake!
Really? You can't put those two games in the same sentence. As much as I appreciate the art style, couldn't get into the game ... too kidish for me.

Tales of Xillia 2. I'm seeing the end of it after something like 90h, huge game![/QUOTE]

is there some sort of creature summoning in 2 or something? or is that just a strange fairy character?

still chugging away at Fire Emblem A and SMT Strange Journey.

I beat NNK at last, my impressions remain same, story was pretty meh, ending was decent though. Overall I enjoyed running around and doing errands more than main quest. It was a good effort overall, Hino probably shouldn't write everything L5 makes...

I'm looking at Xenosaga III as my next game, yeah I've actually never played it before. I've played the first one ages ago, I haven't played II and I've heard it's pretty bad. I'm looking at III because I've heard the battle system is pretty interesting, I think I'll probably be lost as far as story goes though.

It probably is the best JRPG this gen, which is definitely a problem, sadly.
Its an ok game that I can appreciate, but I completely understand if it didn't click with someone. I recommend it.
The game falls short of Great.
The story was extremely bland and kiddy, Oliver is an Idiot, Esther eats through MP like cake, battle system need ff12's gambit system, not enough animated cut-scenes. Just tons of issues that aren't necessarily problems, but they definitely should have been addressed. It would have turned this game from ok to Fantastic.

Yes, it's the best damn RPG ever made imo. I think I still have my NES cartridge, but not the box or manual which were quite amazing.
well here goes :D

FF13 endgame, tortoise farming etc.
I'm enjoying this part alot more than the game proper, maybe that's just me...
I think that growing up with Diablo I and II has resulted in me always enjoying combat more than anything else in a game.

just finished both raidou 1 and megaman x command mission.

horrry shietttt. finally.

now working on heartgold and tales of legendia.

hnngh

I'm thinking of getting platinum and white 1 just because; however, I don't want to splurge on 2 poke games that are the same.
already have heartgold and black 2 (the latter for the unovo region)

any good reason why I should even get plat and white 1 ?
