what jrpg are you playing right now ?

So in The Last Remnant, how big of a deal is keeping your battle rank low? Is it something I should really worry about just playing through my first time? i.e. if it gets too high can it really break the game by leveling the bosses too much?

I need some help picking a new game to play jRPG. I'm a bit burnt out on Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Right now I am playing Harvest Moon 3DS and Friends of Mineral Town. Plus a few computer WRPGs.

Any suggestions on some RPGs to play on the DS/3DS/PSP/Vita?

It isn't a huge deal, especially if you're playing on PC. If you don't actively go out of your way to fight things, like intentionally trying to grind, you shouldn't run into any issues. Fighting everything on your path is fine.

So just doing main story and side quests should be okay? I just won't go places to grind just for grinding sake and I should be okay? I am on PC.

I keep hearing that the female MC > the male MC in P3P, so I'm thinking of replaying the game. Is there really that big a difference between the two? Although it's been a while since I've beaten Persona 3, so I might just end up replaying it anyways.

The big difference is that she gets social links with the whole team instead of just the girls and the hermit social link is different as well.

I think her s. links are way better than the guys and she comes across as being way more connected to the group. Her dialogue choices are also more upbeat than the male.

Yeah, and on PC it's much less of an issue too. Just play normally and it'll all go smoothly.

As for a recommendation for a beginner, I would say dooo nottttt ignore herbal arts! Use them whenever you can so you can unlock vivification herbs, among others.

Why? Sidequests are marked with red speech bubbles; you can find all of them without a guide.

Some sidequests have a time frame that need to be done before a certain event. Also, some require careful planning, especially 'at hatreds end' which is optional but worth it.

I've been getting through Xenogears on my Vita until recently when I decided to take a break. I'm about halfway through, but I don't think I've gotten to the point where the story is just told to you. In other word the part everyone hates, so I'll reserve judgement until I get there.

Breath of Fire 2. BOF1 was a pretty neat attempt at a JRPG by Capcom with some glaring flaws.

Playing through the sequel (with the new and improved retranslation), but there are two jrpg boner killers in this game:
1) The soundtrack is abysmal. Every track is a short unmemorable sample that repeated over and over again. Its sad that the best track so far, is a cover of the BOF1 world map theme.
2) Features DQ2's terrible fetch quest game design of you need to this really ominous dungeon, but in order to reach that place you need the mystikal scepter of Adir. Don't have the scepter? Then you need to befriend the vegan dwarves in Nogrod. But they'll only barter that scepter with a spice that can only be found the lost woods of Yggdrasilaethen.

working through FFIV and FFV right now. Although I'm finding FFIV quite boring in comparison. The job system of FFV is surprising addictive and adds much more enjoyable dimensions IMO.

That's true, but if you just do them all as they come up, you won't have a problem.
At Hatred's End I do agree with, but I lucked out on that one I guess since the options are options I'd choose anyway.

the difficulty with some quests was that a couple of them were in that one dungeon that was confusing as heck, and there's a couple in that enormous desert; that one quest with the pillars, walking back and fro...that definitely needed a guide

how is pbw2's postgame content ? and how long did it take you to beat the main ?

Tons of content, I gotta say. There's the Pokemon World Tournament, new areas you can explore, rare Pokemon to collect, trainers to beat and more. A list here.

It took me...40-50 hours to beat the main? I was doing alot of training and in game content too haha.

What you don't like hearing something like this looped for 15 mins?

Well, the iOS version of FFT got an update, which prompted playthrough number...lost count.

Also finishing up Code of Princess. Not great by any means, but those visuals -- yum! So many disappointing things about this game, not least of all the dead online, but the graphics are some of the best I've seen on 3DS. Ironically, the 3D effect kinda blows.

And I'm playing through Tales of the Abyss (3DS) again, not because I really want to, but I hate to waste that grade.

I think that's true about a lot of the music, but I think there are some standout tracks. I never really appreciated BoF2's music until I replayed it recently, though... The battle themes especially are pretty great, and so are some of the event themes. Of course, it's definitely the weakest BoF soundtrack.

It's basically turned based with twist. Most every attack requires you to use the spinner, some attacks are harder to hit than others, as you might expect. The spinner also adds a couple of related status effects in the game, like double speed or random speed for the dial, both obviously negative effects. There are also ways to increase the amount of hits you get, IIRC, or otherwise manipulate to spinner for your advantage.

But really, the main draw to Shadow Hearts - the first one anyway - are the horror like elements. The second game is a better game in my opinion, due to some better sidequests, slight tweaks to the ring mechanics, extra content, progression systems, magic and etc, but it removes a lot of the horror from the first game.

If you don't care for turn based, you likely won't like Shadow Hearts battle system.

The Judgment Ring is one of the better systems in a turn based JRPG.

If we're talking extra reaction type systems in turn based games then yes, SH's system is pretty much best. Beats Lost Odyssey, Legend of Dragoon,... Well, there aren't many but still. Personally I still prefer it when there's no reaction-based stuff.

What's the sad face for?

I was kind of let down with that twist. I mean I already knew what it was but the way they brought it up wasn't, I don't know, dramatic enough imo. Just felt no impact when it happened.

Anyway, ordered Fire Emblem Awakening last night. Going to take at least a week to get here, though. I probably got spoiled on a plot twist a while back, when some idiot thought it'd be clever to post a picture of one character from FE in a thread about relateable villains or something.

I've started the game two days ago and it feels very appropriate. You get used to it very quickly and it brings a certain interesting flavor to the turn-based combat. I'm in Dalian, by the way.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm planning on picking it up from a friend tomorrow so hopefully the Judgement Ring isn't such a bad mechanic like you guys say.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. I'm trying to juggle both.

Still really early in P2, story-wise. Dungeons are taking me forever to get through because I absolutely have to tile the whole map, and the encounter rate likes to make this process longer. Not to mention that battles can take a while, too, especially when you're first experimenting with whom you send out to speak to demons and what to say to them for the desired result.

All in all, it definitely reminds me a lot of EP (which I didn't complete), so after I'm done with this, I'll probably revisit my copy of EP on PS3. The music's great, too. I really like the regular battle theme.

Tactics Ogre also takes me forever per battle. Pretty sure I'm at 40 hours and am only at the beginning of chapter 4. That's probably just me, though.

Persona 2 has aged a bit. It carries all the flaws of a PS1-era jRPG. It's still a really good game, though. Enjoy Mecha Hitler and his Nazi choir theme song.

have you played either pb or white ? I have white and black 2, haven't started yet, but are they 2 totally different games ?

hope it's not just another iteration

Thanks, guess I will look up hatred end just so I know when to check the FAQ.

THe last remnant is no joke. I tried doing one of the guild quests (kill monster in caves) at rank four and couldn't do it. Now I am stuck on a boss (
the fire one after you talk to the mage in white for the first time
). The guest unions could probably do it on their own except the only way I can stay alive is to full time heal myself which means I am sinking the momentum which makes it harder to survive...etc. the problem is I am early enough that I don't have a lot of options, not sure what I can do to improve things.

RAINBOW. SILK. ROAD.

You grind by taking goods that are common in one town to another where they are worth a little bit more. Figuring out the best trade routes, while also exploring the world for dungeons/quests, recruiting an army, increasing your load potential by buying camels.... this game is unlike any other jrpg I have ever played and I am positively hooked!

Yeah, I've played White numerous times before.

While White/Black 2 is still set in Unova (still the same starter choices) and there are some familiar elements, it's still a different game than BW1. It feels like a true sequel, similar to how G/S/C was to R/B/Y.

Just platinum'd Tales of Xillia. :D

Overall even though I got sick of the game during my second run, I still liked the game. The characters (minus one) were all pretty enjoyable, I do like the battle system and I like even more how breakable the elemental system is.

thanks. I didn't want to buy pokemon games and then be dislodged because it was another remake.

so confusing. why does nintendo/game freak do these enhanced remakes.

right now i'm playing heartgold, just got platinum and white, and have black 2.

Can I bump this?

Now that E3 is over and no longer distracting me, I got a bit further in Grandia 2. I just completed the segment with
The mother and her once-blind child, now holding the eyes of Valnar
it was actually quite sad :(

The progression systems with the eggs, books, and coins it pretty simple but the game does a pretty good job limiting the amount of coins you get - you actually have to pick and choose what upgrades to get (unless you just grind needlessly). The two major Valnar boss battle so far were pretty hectic, I like how they started off with several enemies. It kind of makes it a scramble as you try to pick off the weaklings before you get overwhelmed too quickly. The pacing in the game is pretty good, and so far the difficulty has been pretty good, no crazy spikes. I have to remind myself to re-equip Elena's skills and equipment whenever
Millenia
appears.

I hope some of the later game dungeons get a little trickier though.

Fire Emblem Awakening and now that we got a working PS3 again, Demon's Souls for the first time. I'm not sure if I like it as much as I liked Dark Souls, I like the hub world system more than the completely open world but that's pretty much it. FE is fucking awesome though

Just beaten Xenosaga 3, the ending made me cry :(

No joke, the experience of playing + completing Xenosaga 1 - 3 was, is, and will always be something that I cannot erase from my mind. Such an unforgettable experience.

I especially adore how Allen rose up against Kevin on 3. Incredible, incredible scene.

Also, right now I am having difficulty in choosing whether to play Fire Emblem Awakening, Soul Sacrifice, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, P4 Golden, or MH3U... urghhh. Or replaying Breath of Fire IV.

Ni no kuni just arrived in the mail today. Grabbed a bargain and it fortunately arrived in time for the weekend.

Heard it's quite good. Jumping in later hoping for the best.

Shion in that particular scene though, ugh god.. Every time I try to replay Xenosagas I remember how horrible Shion is and I'm just completely put off.

I just started Demon souls. I have to say the messaging system is one of the most innovative thing in gaming. I am dying a lot, and there´s no mercy.

Oh yeah, I made it through all of 1-1, even the first boss, without dying once :smug

Starting with royalty helped a lot though lol

Dragon Quest IV remake for DS.

I have V and VI as well but only spent a few min on each. Really lovin' IV right now.

Other than messing around with some of the old NES/Famicom and SFC originals + remakes via emulation some years ago, I'm just now getting into the DQ franchise. I grew up on the classic Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy games.

Heard mostly great things about the original DQ VII on PS1 as well as the recent 3DS remake and VIII on PS2, I want these. Hoping for a localization of 3DS VII. It's too bad the PS1 remake of IV and PS2 remake of V never made it here.

I'm playing Final Fantasy XIII. Always been a fan of the series and this game honestly isn't quite as bad as the press it gets. It's still probably the weakest entry since V (which I didn't really enjoy, for me it just aged pretty badly), but it's still an enjoyable game.

Also, Persona 4 Golden on Vita. And this game is absolutely amazing, loving it.

not really. game is super linear.

Shion in that particular scene though, ugh god.. Every time I try to replay Xenosagas I remember how horrible Shion is and I'm just completely put off.

I always thought she's a fantastic character. She's not all perfect, pure, or whatever attributes you usually throw to a leading female protagonist.

Her development from Xenosaga 1 to 3 fascinated me.

And what do you mean by ugh in that particular scene? In the end she has the courage to make the right choice after all, and defied the will of one she, up until that time, loved the most and basically one of the biggest reasons of her living.

xenosaga games are superb. the whole series is great.

dem sidequests. dat music. dat disappointing episode 3 final boss.

hnnngh

I admit my memory is a bit hazy, but I swear Shion made the dumbest decisions.
Boyfriend leaves him for years, comes back as bad guy, fucking ruins everything, EVERYONE is saying how bad and horrible he is and STILL she's all "YES DAVID I KNOW YOU USE(D) ME BUT I STILL WANT TO BE WITH YOU EVEN IF THE WORLD GETS DESTROYED BECAUSE OF IT!!!!!"
(his name was david right? i remember it being super boring compared to other jrpg names lol)

That kind of stuff just doesn't work with relatively simple characters as I can probably never relate to them enough to understand that kind of decision, and feel the same. Like I said a while back in the FF thread, romances are usually absolutely fantastic as side stories and add depth to the characters. When they directly affect the plot, they fucking suck, big time.

At the very least someone could have stopped her.

It felt kind of like Shulk and Fiora's relationship in Xenoblade.
How am I supposed to relate to them when Fiora's away most of the time, and when she comes back, she's stupidly one-dimensional? No relationship development of any sort, the writer just tells me that "hey they have been in love with each other for a long time so just deal with it." I wanted him to end up with Melia but no fuck you, here's a forced love triangle, shulk is still gonna end up with fiora even though you have no idea why/how they even came to like each other.
Of course, in XB's case it thankfully doesn't really affect the main plot.

But yeah, at least she comes to her senses later, yeah. After all that dumb shit, she somewhat redeemed herself. It's not about her not being pure or anything, the only thing I want from main characters is that they don't repeatedly do dumb stuff. It just kills me inside when a protagonist does something extremely stupid, everyone knows it's stupid and you're powerless to do anything about it because the story is so fucking linear.

Still, opinions! I hated everything about her, but I really liked every other character in the game. Every single one. And Albedo is the most awesome fucking badass antagonist ever. And the games are still very good. And hell, I think I'm going to replay the series after I finish Fire Emblem here :V

e: not sure why i wrote such a long post, i'm not interested in arguing or anything. w/e

Dragon Quest IV on the DS is the same thing as Dragon Quest IV on PS1 though. And there is an English patch for DQV PS2, you can import the game, apply the patch and play it.

You'll find the grasses in Demon's Souls make it at least a tad easier than Dark Souls, especially since you can use them when in another player's world. Midway through the game, you should have hordes and hordes of top-level grasses. Game's still as challenging as Dark Souls battle for battle, but having an almost limitless supply of healing outside of battle is definitely a crutch Dark Souls didn't have.

Oh yeah there's that. I thought I liked Dark Souls' system more the first time I played DkS since you had, in practice, infinite health potions. But now I'm two hours in on DeS and I already have over 30 bunches of grass, if I keep getting them like this, I don't think I'll ever run out :V

1-1 was of course very easy, used maybe three or four bunches of the lowest level grass
