what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Did you turn off the combat animations? As fancy and entertaining as they are, they're a huge waste of time when you just want to focus on the combat.

Most of the time. It eliminates the time needed for battles but it doesn't really fix the map complaint (though I just started some of the harder paralogues and they're better, as well as any other battles where I can't just steamroll through everything with ease).

Second playthrough of Final Fantasy XIII-2 and still enjoying it. Augusta Tower and Academia AF400 are pretty shitty, though. I love it that there's so much optional stuff that I missed on the first playthrough.

I backed myself into a corner with my JRPGs. I was somewhere in the middle of Dragon Quest VI on DS when I picked up DQ9, ended up not having time for either yet. Then I was somewhere in the middle of No No Kuni when GTA5 came out.

My backlog is getting more and more intimidating.

Since Persona 4: Golden is my GOTY, I've decided to play P3F, and I really like it (I'm about 20 hours in). But the improvements in combat and dungeoncrawling makes P4G so much more enjoyable. They really need to make a Persona 3: Sapphire for vita

Im close to done Fire Emblem awakening and about 10 hours into Shin Megami Tensei IV. Those and making a new team in Pokemon Y will keep me busy for a long long time

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Had it since launch

Figured it was about time.

As much of a rush as it is to deal massive damage during the stagger countdown it always annoys me how it seems like bosses only get injured when staggered and nothing else. And it's such small damage that I'm fighting for an hour.

How does my monster being a medic or a decoy help in any way when dealing damage to a boss. It's like the boss are weak to your paradigm shift and not the actual attack themselves.

Not sure it's true but it feels that way and it keeps preventing me to move on when I hit those brick walls.

But I gotta move on... Preordered part 3 so I'm committed. Gotta fund 15 and KH3 :(

A mix of Ni No Kuni and Time and Eternity. Probably should have sprang for the Tales games or the Agarest series, right GAF?

Starting Rune Factory 4 again. I only stopped because it released in October and that month was jam-packed.

I'm totally lost. I need to establish a routine and stick with it.

Earthbound - Complete

FFXIII - Complete except for the last mission (had it down to 10% health once, then was too slow switching paradigms and.... FUCK!)

Clearing the backlog in time for Bravely Default over Xmas :)

I'm about 40 hours into Persona 3 FES. Liking it so far, but compared to P4G, some small gameplay elements have nagged me throughout (getting tired in dungeons, not being able to equip/unequip party members' stuff outside of specific situations, the torture of not getting to pick which abilities transfer during fusion). Not only that, but the lack of social links with my party members kind of bothers me too. I can date the girls, but why can't I hang out with Junpei after school? I know I'm complaining about an old game when its sequel fixed a lot of its problems, but it still bugs me. I'm still really enjoying myself a lot, and I plan to finish it sometime soon.

Been considering revisiting JRPGs after about a 15 year hiatus from the genre.

Current systems I own are PS3, PS4 and PC. Are there any "must plays" available for those systems? I am guessing nothing for the PS4 at this time.

No specific criteria or preferences, I'm a clean slate at this point.

Many People like and recommended Tales of... series. You should try Ni No Kuni (in next week I'm going to start it too).

I just started a new Chrono Cross game after being done with Zelda ALBW.

It's been a while since I played and I never really finished it, yet I went through Chrono Trigger tons of times. This time it's for real.

I plan on playing Squaresoft's old school RPGs during all my Christmas vacations, idk why, but I just feel like that, heh. :P

I just purchased Dark Souls for $11 on Amazon. I never played Demon's Souls, and for the most part I kind of stink at video games. Err....wish me luck!

Give Valkyria Chronicles your utmost attention.

Resonance of Fate is pretty good as well, battle system gets some getting used to, and the story can get a slight bit confusing, but definitely give it a shot.

Ni NO kuni DEFINITELY.

Kingdom hearts 1 HD and I fucking love it. Makes me happy that people say KH2 and BBS are better.

This is the first time playing a KH game and I'm excited to finally know at least the story from the first game

Up to the final dungeon of the post game of Graces F... think once that's done I'll take a brief detour and finally play Link Between Worlds... then it's Suikoden 3, Memories of Celceta, and Ys 5 for me. Got a lot of great RPGs on deck... and 15 days of vacation.

^Late, but depends on what you feel like? Are you in the mood for more action rpgs like the KH series in general? Try a Tales game maybe. Do you want more card-based battle system shenanigans? Hunt down a copy of either Baten Kaitos 1 or 2 if you have a Gamecube or Wii with backwards compatibility (II is the prequel, but I'd recommend playing 1 first, to appreciate the changes in 2). It'll prob be expensive though. :(

Recently, I've been playing Ys II. I finally beat Ys I after being stuck on the penultimate boss for a legitimate 2 months, according to Steam (I only needed 2 days to beat the last boss afterwards, RIP in peace my wrist). The magic system seems like a neat addition, not sure if it'll nerf boss fights though. I've only beaten one boss so far, and that one seemed like it was designed with magic in mind. Hopefully not all bosses will degenerate into shoot 'em up gameplay, though it wasn't too bad anyway.

I've also been playing Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1. I like it so much better than Persona 3 (my only other foray into the SMT franchise, although apparently Persona should be considered its own franchise). The battle system is good, although the encounter rate is a little high. I like how you can customize each character through mantras. The plot's pacing is wonderful, and always makes me feel like I'm making meaningful progress. The plot itself is odd, as is the cast, but I think it's charming that way.

still ni no kuni. it's an on-and-off playtime. 20 hours across the past 7-8 months. in-between those i've finished god of war ascension, beyond two souls, and ico hd (which was a masterpiece). played some android, psp, and ps1 games as well but only in small doses.

so yeah, ni no kuni. hopefully i will finish it before 2014 ends.

IMO, DDS2 is even better than the first game. Played it for the first time this past summer and it hit all the right notes for me. Great storyline, awesome music and gameplay. I haven't played Nocturne yet but so far that is my favorite of the SMT series, yes beating out even P3/4.

gawd damn hype me more bro I started DDS1 yesterday night with about two hours of progress. Pretty good so far. Heat is a dick tho.

Nocturne came out before this and that had the sensor for encounters so it's an odd omission. Maybe it'll show up again later.

Heat is a major dick. He hasn't gotten better for me so far (I'm twenty-ish hours in).

Aw man, I try to avoid getting hyped up in case of crushing disappointment, and you're not helping. D:

Replaying Persona 4 Golden (Lost about 30 hours of new game plus because someone overwrote it)

SMT IV

Mario and Luigi Dream Team

Thank God for handhelds. It's the only way I could fit JRPGS into my schedule.

The exception will be Persona 5 of course

I just finished Secret of Mana for the first time. The thing is that I was not impressed at all. It is weird because other SNES Squaresoft titles are among my all time favorite games, e.g. CT, FF6, Mario RPG etc. Maybe it was much better back then and now it is a game that just didn't age well.

Besides the terrible AI the game feels broken in many ways.. Magic is too powerful, leveling up magic is just stupid and there were several times when I just could not move and I had to reset the game (stuck into walls etc). Regarding the plot I had no expectations at all, but the plot was next to non-existent and the same goes for the characters and their dialogues.

Despite the rant I enjoyed the game, I liked the visuals and the music... Still I don't feel that it can compare with other Square masterpieces of that era.

How about other similar games of this era e.g. SoE, Illusion of Time, Terranigma, Seiken Densetsu 3? If I wasn't impressed by SoM due to the flaws that I mentioned, is there a chance that I will like more any of the above?

15 hours into Persona 3 FES (my first Persona RPG).

It's okay. Reminds me of playing Sim Date on Newgrounds way back in high school - only with a really shitty dungeon crawl aspect.
