I can just imagine the "asshole" in this story being some old fogie out to teach you a lesson when it comes to leaving your keys out in open view within an unlocked car. No damage was done, so that's just another lesson learned, I suppose. At least you won't be making that same mistake again! :lol

Just think: instead of someone with harmless intentions teaching you a lesson, your car could have been taken out on a joy ride by some kids and become involved in an accident that resulted in injury and damages to person and property other than your own. You're not the only person who can be victim due to your own negligence. I'd say you're better off having been made a fool of harmlessly when much worse could have happened.

Well said. Much agreed upon. :)

I was exiting a restaurant one day, and on my way to my car, I noticed someone had left their headlights on.

So I went to my car, took out a piece of paper and wrote "YOU LEFT YOUR LIGHTS ON", placed it under his windshield wiper, and went home.

I can't believe only one person so far has mentioned hiding the keys. I don't understand why, if you were going to leave the keys in the car, you couldn't have just hid them. Glovebox, under the seat, in the console storage area (if there is one), etc.! Nobody would've been the wiser.

This sounds like stolen comedy. Almost like Steven Wright. Come on give props, where did you get it?

they were in the middle console area between the driver and passenger's seat under a glasses case. they weren't exactly in plain view. not hidden either, but not right out in the open.

so wait a minute.. this entire thread is about you doing possibly one of the dumbest things possible in western society (short of brushing your teeth with a steak knife) and you are asking what kind of an asshole responds to that?

umm.. well... there are millions of assholes in the world, and the chance that there is one around your car when you do something just utterly moronic is like 10000/1.

It's like bitching because your house got robbed after you left the front door wide open before going to work.

we don't lock our car doors, or houses, or whatever to stop them from being broken into. We lock them to weed out the 97% of idiots out there who would take advantage of them if they were wide open (the remaining 3% will figure out a way to get in even if locked).

By leaving your keys right on the front seat you just included the other 97%.. good job.

and frankly I don't see what you are bitching about. I would rather pay a locksmith $60 to get into my car than an insurance deductible for some dude joyriding around in my car and then torching it. or if you don't have full ocverage insurance than needing to be an entire new car....

personally I don't think the dude was being an asshole, I think he was doing you a favor and saving you some money.
