Disintegration is not my favorite Cure album, but I think it might be their 'best'. It's the first sign of the band taking their distorted atmospheric post punk badassery and adding a true polish and shine.

The album is fucking beautiful, from start to finish. I was born in 1991, and this album is from '89, but I'm going to stand firm in my belief that any other answer is simply wrong.

I say this as someone who absolutely adores 80's Sonic Youth, Depeche Mode, and Duran Duran as well.

You can't beat Disintegration. It's an 80s fever dream.

The already mentioned "Thriller" by Michael Jackson.
If you were there, you would remember would a force of nature Thriller's release and its videos were.

Honorable mentions go to Purple Rain by Prince and Appetite for Destruction by Guns'n Roses.

As much as the kid in me loved 80s Van Halen, NWA, Beastie Boys, Motley Crue, U2, Guns n'Roses, Prince and so many more it just has to be Michael Jackson's Thriller, shit it had these all on the one album -
  • Thriller
  • Beat it
  • Billie jean
  • Wanna be startin' something

It’s hard to pick albums from the 80s as most were singles led with a bunch of throwaway tracks in between and the genres and sounds were so diverse.

If I had to choose though it’s probably a tossup between Appetite for Destruction or .....And Justice for All.

While your album choices are great, Thriller wasn’t led by a bunch of throwaway songs. Out of 9 tracks, 7 were top 10 singles. And the album photo shoot...

I did say most albums, not all. 😉

And MJ and Thriller were hype as fuck when I was a kid.

Greatest album of the 80s, IMO:

Four great singles, several great album tracks, and no filler. Here's a song you probably don't know, unless you've heard the album.

This is hard because the 80s had 2 distinct sounds, early 80's was way different than the late 80s.One song that always comes to mind though is Prince's Little Red Corvette. The early 80s still had some lingering musical motifs of the 70s, but Little Red Corvette sounds nothing like anything else from 1982.

For me its Huey Lewis and the News - Sports
It has a classic 80's sound without trying to be something its not.
Great vocals, mix of rock, pop, and funk.
Gives off great vibes with high energy and is generally a happy album.

I feel like there's still a lot of 70s influence here.

Funnily enough, I feel like Stuck With You by the Hewey's might be my quintessential 80s song

Preach, brother.

My favorite album of the 80s and of all time. Not a single track is filler. It's one of the few albums I can listen all the way through without skipping a track.

Geez. I thought this album came out in the 90s. I had no idea it came out in 83. It’s such a deconstruction of folk music it fits the 90s so much more. I guess these guys were just way, waaaay ahead of their time. I can’t believe I misremembered this fact for so long.

Joshua Tree by U2 for me.

But there are so, so many good ones in this thread already. Could probably add a dozen more as I type this.

I was going to say either An Innocent Man by Billy Joel, Bad by MJ, or Straight Outta Compton by NWA, but then I remembered being 10 and hearing the opening of Welcome To The Jungle, so my choice is Appetite by Gnr.

I know. Along with artists like The Velvet Underground, I think they contributed a lot to what people would come to think of as "indie" music.

The Pet Shop Boys produced some absolutely awesome tunes though I'd be hard pressed to choose between these two albums.

Might be cheating, but there are some great soundtracks and "best of" albums (often not compiled until much later) that define the 80s for me.

Back to the Future soundtrack
Footloose soundtrack
Top Gun soundtrack
MJ History
Duran Duran Biggest & Best
Madonna Immaculate
and others...

I may be biased though because during an empty theatre screening of this was the first time I ever touched a boob.

Good suggestion, and I'll have to think about my answer but for now I have to touch on this album and how it is held back by one song. Honky Tonk Blues. It is so close to being a "put it on and hit play" albums. You're sitting there enjoying the album, "fuckin fantastic album this is" you say. Then all of a sudden Honky Tonk Blues comes on and fucks up the whole scene. What a bummer.
