I think it's just the Sony spin machine. They'll probably announce the PS3 will be released this year and when the holiday season has come they start delaying until the second quarter of 2006. A classic strategy.
Not bloody likely, the media format isn't even nailed down yet and the current wrangling with Toshiba over a unified Blu-Ray/HD-DVD format risks delaying the PS3 release to possibly late 2006.
Unless Sony decides to pull Blu-Ray/HD-DVD and go with standard DVD once again. If they are serious about matching Xbox 360's release, that's what would have to be done.
Well if Sony is trying to scare the crap outa MS while getting the Rev details out of Nintendo this might work for them. Then they'll know what's coming and delay their release to mid 2006 after E3.

Responding to questions from Jiji news service, Sony Chief Financial Officer Takao Yuhara states, "For the year end sales season, simultaneously building up both the PlayStation Portable system in America and Europe as well as the next generation PlayStation is one option that we have."
