What RPGs have party transformation?

I've been thinking about one thing that was in Final Fantasy Legend (GB). Eating the meat of a monster makes the monster in your party (if you have one) transform into another one. I liked that. If you got really lucky and one of the 4 major bosses left some meat (only happened once to me, although i played through the game three times!) your monster transformed into an incredible beast.

SMT3 has a similar, also very interesting, idea that allows to fuse monsters! I like that.

I believe the thing i am actually looking for is some sort of random or free (or at least lots of possibilites) party member evolvement.

Yeah but that's probably a spell or ability, and only allows for one particular transformation. I'm not looking for that, sorry :)

Breath of Fire 3 is one of the few 'traditional' JRPG's that offers a bit of freedom in how you evolve Ryu's dragon forms, for which there were a whole slew of them to goof with.

Then there is that Pokemon stuff which I hear is so popular among the kids.

Jade Cocoon games? Never played them myself though.

SMT3 is pretty much the mother of them all I'd guess.

BoF3 was pretty mediocre overall in my opinion, but man that dragon transformation stuff was a blast. :D

BoF III=best dragon system in the series, horrible everything else. :lol

Makes one wonder why they turned them back into boring summons for IV and a crutch that punished you if you relied on it too often in Dragon Quarter

The first SaGa Frontier on PS1 has a monster transformation system that's similar to, but more flexible than the system found in FF Legend 1-2 (which of course were actually SaGa games)

Last Armageddon on the PC-Engine is one of my favorites of all time. Your monsters (your party is all mutants, post-apocalypse) evolve, and you choose the way they'll evolve or what they'll turn into. I never mapped it, but the possibilities had to be a HUGE tree.

After Armageddon was the MEGA-CD sequel and it was pretty sucky. The transformations in that game were handled by taking DNA from the pre-mutation humans that were captured that had the attributes you wanted. They were naked in jail cells and you picked them like dinner at Red Lobster. I always felt guilty about picking the little kids that had rockin' DNA I needed...

I'd love to play/do an update to Last Armageddon. At least part of the developer (Pandora's Box) is part of Sony Japan now...maybe there's hope.

Disgaea? You can change a character from nearly any monster or human job type into any other monster or human job, and carry over some of their stats / abilities.

Not to derail, but are you familiar with what happened to Pandora-box in general? I liked their series of PS cheapies.

Actually, my memory was cloudy. Last Armageddon was made by Brain Grey, some of which ended up as Pandora's Box with Sony. Most of their Sony work has been pretty forgettable. I don't know if they got absorbed into other teams and PB was dissolved. Next time I get a chance, I'll ask.

SMT Nocturne is right up your alley.

Also, in Breath of Fire 2 you had different transformations through shamans, each character had a few different ones.
