What should be the Justice League movie roster?

With Man of Steel successfully setting up the new cinematic DC Universe and Superman/Batman announced in San Diego Comic-Con, more and more rumors are surfacing about DC heroes receiving movies with a specific framework. Specifically, it is said that following Superman/Batman, Warner Bros. will introduce The Flash and eventually Justice League on the silver screen -- and regardless of the validity of the rumors, we all know that it will be a huge opportunity for WB to pass on.

The question is: what heroes would star on such a movie? And not only that, but which of them can make an appearance before their team's debut?

I guess the big five would are a given: Superman has debuted and Batman is co-starring in the Man of Steel sequel. The Flash is rumored to have a solo-film after Superman/Batman and is a pretty safe bet regardless. Now, about Green Lantern... Can we expect them to use GL 2011's Hal Jordan? I would say probably not; but can we expect a GL that isn't Hal Jordan altogether? John Stewart would be the next logical choice, and would work very well, but I'd rather have Hal for the first movie. As for Wonder Woman, I wouldn't expect anyone from the Big Three to not be there, but (barring Green Lantern, due to 2011's disaster -- though he could still have a cameo in The Flash) I think she is the most likely to not debut before the movie out of the standard characters.

Now, the Justice League usually composes of seven characters, leaving two spots that could be filled by several candidates. Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Hawkman or Hawkgirl, Atom, Green Arrow and Cyborg are some of the most popular choices. Maybe Shazam/Captain Marvel too.

Personally, besides the big five, I'd be interesting in seeing at least one of Martian Manhunter and Cyborg. Though they don't necessarily offer too much together, each of them gives something different to the team. It's always odd to see J'onn do what he does for Earth in spite of it not being his home (something we can't say for Clarke) and his dynamic with the team is reinforced by his distance from each member. Cyborg on the other hand is a surprisingly fit member in modern reincarnations of the League. Loyal, collected and very stable -- things you can't say for numerous modern JL members. If a Teen Titans film feature was an options, I'd probably choose J'onn for Justice League -- but as things are, I'm equally eager to see any of them. As for the last member (considering that only one of the above would get a spot), I'm not sure. I'm not very interested in either of the Hawks, and Aquaman's insecurities tire me. Maybe Atom, and if less popular members have a chance, Red Tornado or Black Lightning would be amazing to see, especially the former. Well, or maybe this Aquaman.

If it were up to you, which heroes would the roster be composed of?

I don't like how Cyborg has been added to the League. Wonder Woman would be hard and if they had to do Aquaman do the 90's Water Viking. As for Green Lanterns I much prefer John. Would love a Martian Manhunter tied to the League's origin. Take a few pages out of the JL and JLU cartoons.

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, GL (preferably Hal, new one), Flash (Preferably Barry with a tint of Wally's personality), Martian Manhunter.

Knowing DC though, they will probably have Cyborg instead of MM though unfortunately.

I want to see some cameos like Aquaman being in it briefly being a badass to set audiences up for him in the sequal or something.

Hmm... probably something like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, and one other person - ideally a woman.

Zatanna would cover non-mythological magic (better hope they get her in before Scarlet Witch debuts lol). Vixen would be an excellent choice, probably maybe favorite. Hawkgirl perhaps, but she feels redundant with Wonder Woman. Doctor Light (female), but that's also redundant with Green Lantern. To be honest I'm pretty down on Black Canary. I'm also okay with stuff like the daughter of the King of Atlantis (I like the idea that he is too busy running shit to be a full-time superhero), a female Martian (M'ggan? Also, get this one in before Vision debuts lol), etc. People will hate me for saying that though.

Alternatively, I like the idea of a world with a bunch of superheroes (as opposed to Marvel's handful) and some of them getting called in as specialists.

I think they should start with just the 5 mentioned in the op. They won't get as many origin movies as marvel and it's probably best if they don't have to introduce too many characters in the first JL flick.

And replace Hal with John since Green Lantern sucked.

I'd prepare for Cyborg, if they even have a sixth person. I'd love to see Zatanna, but Cyborg seems to be getting the push lately.

Cyborg stinks as far as characters getting a push.

Actually, I'd like a seventh honorary support member in the form of Oracle, but that era has passed it seems.

(Generally not a fan of what they are doing in DC comics these days.)

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern (personally I say Kyle or Guy, John is boring as fuck, and Hal is only slightly less boring) and possibly Martian Manhunter.

Yeah, new Cyborg doesn't seem all that. I never liked the Teen Titans cartoon either, so pulling characters from that (well, not from that but you know what I mean) doesn't make me too pleased.

My ideal choice would be Martian Manhunter.

Cyborg offers diversity to the team, but they could just go with John Sterwart Green Lantern instead. He's been in enough media that younger people are familiar with him.

I'd go with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Stewart GL for the initial lineup. Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and the like would take too much explaining.

If the Flash Rumor is true, 4 out of the 5 I have listed would have been introduced to movie audiences in some form before the Justice League. Wonder Woman could then be introduced in the JL movie itself.

The DC animated show (before they shoved everyone in with Unlimited) had Supes, Bats, Flash, Jon Lantern, Martian, Wonder, and Hawkgirl. I think that lineup could work. They might replace Hawkgirl with Aquaman because "you've already got a chick." Aquaman could definitely work on the big screen, he could easily have an "oh shit" moment like the Hulk with him summoning up a huge tidal wave or leading a giant dinosaur army or something. I really wonder how they are going to make it not look like "The Avengers but with DC heroes" to audiences though.

I still say Wonder Woman not getting a movie before JL is weird as fuck. 2016 would be perfect to do so; it's her 75th anniversary, and the whole anniversary angle was a big part in Man of Steel's marketing campaign.

Plus, that means they only need to introduce Aquaman and Manhunter in the JLA movie.

I wonder if DC would be crazy enough to use the new female GL they've been teasing. That'd be fun to see the meltdowns.

I only recognize half the heroes in that pic.

My condolence.

Here's my route if I am in charge of Warners.

Man of Steel (done deal)
Superman/Batman (World's Finest? done deal)
Aquaman/Wonderwoman team up (Oversea royalty team up)
Green Lantern/Green Arrow
The Flash

And culminating in.
Justice League (introducing Martian Manhunter)

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Supergirl.

Supergirl makes sense because of the MoS prequel comic and the easter eggs in the film itself, plus I'd also just like to see more than one female member of a superhero team.

Don't judge me.

I like you. It won't happen but I would love to see Guy or Kyle on screen. No John please, such a dull character.

Cyborg sucks, and sucks hard, but does add to the diversity of the lineup, so I could see him getting a spot.

Do you guys think they'll want to include Green Lantern? I'm wondering if the failure of his recent solo movie would make them unwilling to touch the character for a while.

Top to bottom without looking anything up (looping around after each row):

Batwoman, Brazilian Chick, Starfire, Green Lantern after Hal Jordan Kyle something, Robo Manhattan, Phazon, Black Hood, Bomberman, Mr. Terrific, Blue Beetle, Orion, Wonder Woman's Sister, Martian Manhunter, Fire Atom, Starburst, Owlman, Zatanna, Green Arrow, Flash, Hawkgirl, Sheva, Lady Commander, Hawkman, Cyborg, Captain Atom, John Stewart Green Lantern, The Question, Huntress, Supergirl, Captain Marvel, Power Girl, Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Hal Jordan Green Lantern, Rusty, Black Canary, Tornado, Static Shock, Wonder Woman, THE BATMAN, Superman.

I assume I got them all right.

Booster Gold, Ted Kord Blue Beetle, Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Fire, Ice, Black Canary, Dr. Fate, Mister Miracle, Martian Manhunter, Batman.

The best Justice League there ever was.

So agree with this. I don't know if it's cause people grew up with just the animated Justice League and didn't read the comics or what not, but I do NOT get the obsession people have for him. He's a dull boring character.

Kyle has always had the best constructs and Guy is just awesome, so much personality and material there for interesting scenes. Conflicts are interesting and Guy pretty much conflicts with all of them. Stewart is just big stoic character with a deep voice number 5.

Do you guys think they'll want to include Green Lantern? I'm wondering if the failure of his recent solo movie would make them unwilling to touch the character for a while.

Green Lantern is as much a part of the Justice League as Superman, Batman, WW, or Flash. He'll be there. If anything they'll use JL to reboot the movie GL franchise.

Just like they're going to use Superman/Batman to reboot movie Batman.

You have the right idea, man. Although I think MMH is less familiar than Green Lantern.

Nope.

They should adapt the marvel method, seems far more profitable.

"Hey this is a super team, you see that guy, you do not know who the fuck that game is , but he is cool. HIs name is ( insert some guy here) now you like him, you see that , now you have movie tickets you bought them, you find that guy interesting. Oh look over there he has a game, oh oook at that you bought that too"

They could benifit from pushing in some guy besides MM that a lot of people do not know. Keeping it simple don't make money and get exposure. Ya gotta take risks.

And that is what the DC movies are surely lacking.

Superman, Batman, Green Lantern
Idris Elba as John Stewart
, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and MMH

Stephen Amell Green Arrow? :p

Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Flash, Starfire, and The Hood aka Green Arrow.

That's right, no Batman or GL.

If I was ballsy, I would add The Question.

Ideally for a JL movie, I wouldn't even have Superman and Batman until the second act. Green Lantern (probably John, excuse Hal for fucking around off in space), Flash, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman as the original team. With Maxwell Lord bankrolling everything. Having Red Tornado as a secondary villain to whatever main villain they want to tie the team together with.

Sets it up perfectly for Green Arrow to come around in the second film to antagonize Lord, and introduce Black Canary. Maybe even some Hal/Guy spats.

Ending in a third movie buddy comedy of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold finally ousting Lord.

All the while Martian Manhunter battles his Oreo addiction.

I don't get the Cyborg hate. Just because DC messed up a lot of things in the "reboot" doesn't mean that everything is executed badly. I would argue that Cyborg is the biggest surprise in the line-up of the new Justice League, and I'm saying that already thinking that it is far from perfect. Several parts still need infinite amount of work, like Supes's and Bat's relationship and Aquaman's emo personality, but they did a good job with Cyborg IMO. And well, Martian Manhunter is way more iconic, but it's not that they ignored him.
He was the 8th member for a while, before beating the shit out of everyone and leaving.

Edit: Like I said, Cyborg would still work better in a Teen Titans feature, but let's face it; how likely is this to happen?
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Supergirl.

Supergirl makes sense because of the MoS prequel comic and the easter eggs in the film itself, plus I'd also just like to see more than one female member of a superhero team.

You know, while I don't see Supergirl in the League, I'd be down with Power Girl. She's less of a teenager, and much more focused than the former. And I like her whole back story too, even though it's part of a highly convoluted era. DC got her and the Huntress right on the New 52, though I don't expect any Earth-2 action on cinema. Maybe an easter egg at most.

I really wonder how they are going to make it not look like "The Avengers but with DC heroes" to audiences though.
To be fair, if Man of Steel is anything to go by, they already have distincted themselves from Marvel. Wish they had gone that way from Green Lantern already.

  • Wonder Woman - Lynn Collins or Jaimie Alexander or Lena Headey or Gemma Arterton (Really I have a crush on all of them)
  • Green Lantern (Jon Stewart) - Idris Elba (I mean seriously, just look at him then look at Jon...nuff said)
  • Batman - Karl Urban or Matt Bomer, I will accept nothing else
  • Superman - Henry Cavill
  • Flash - Patrick Wilson

Other characters I wouldn't mind seeing in some capacity

PeeGee
Zatanna
Black Canary

If there is going to be another female member, I hope it's Mera.

I was thinking the best way to handle Aquaman would be basically merge Aquaman and Mera into a new "Aquawoman" type character.

That suddenly makes the character a lot less lame.

Mera would be a lot cooler than Aquaman. Her power is just too awesome.

I still can't believe that in 2015 we can't have a Wonder Woman movie because that would make the protagonist a woman in a superhero movie.

Fuck that. I want both of them.

Aquaman haters to the left.
