A high amount would mean I could stop working. So I’d have all the time in the world to play games. But I’d have to give up gaming instead? Does not compute.
I’m not even a heavy gamer anymore, but this hobby has shaped my interests to a point that giving it up completely would leave a gap that I could only fill by completely reinventing my life. Sure, the money would help, but finding completely new interests in a world where basically everyone is playing a video game every once in a while would be very hard. This could lead to early self-distruction so easily.

Some people down on the ropes here... frequent a gaming enthusiast board / accept $10k to give up gaming forever :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The correct answer is no amount of money, unless you're having terminal cancer and you're about to go in a couple weeks, at least leave some good sum to the family :messenger_relieved:

While not the only one this is one of my greatest hobbies.

I always said if I won the lottery or my stock portfolio did incredibly well, I'd build a huge mancave for all my consoles, killer pc's and arcade cabinets. What good is it if I can't use it

Interesting question though.

How stupid would you be to take a deal like this? You might as well suggest going blind or murder your first born.

Money can be earned. Happy memories can't be. We earn money so we can have the time to be happy, unless you never liked videogames to begin with, why would you sacrifice happiness for useless tokens?

Free time and the ability to do what you like with that free time, is basically priceless. Ironically the more money you earn, the less free time you get because as your salary goes up, your COST of "doing nothing" goes up. If your income increased tenfold, your freetime also becomes ten times more expensive.

Most of us who had been gaming for a long time, know that we are running out of time to game. We could buy any game we want, any console we want, even a PS5Pro. But the time we have to use them is a different matter. Give me freetime any day.

10m at least so I will be set for life. I will just consume media all day long in my favorite city and playing “games” with girls instead 😉

But you could never earn “fuck you” level kind of money. Most of the people I know spend most of their time working whether due to low income or supporting their family anyway , so they don’t really have free time for gaming.

I earn enough to life a good life. Getting more doesn't change anything in the long run. You just get used to it.

So... no amount of cash will make me drop games.

I need enough so that I can have luxury hookers every day and enough so that I can open big ambitious businesses (some involving games, some not).

1b$ sounds about the minimum. 100m$ is a lot, but probably not enough to really blow loads of money every single day, not when money will be worth jack shit in 10 years time.

I think I'd take $100,000 and spend it on a personal trainer to undo all the years of slouching in front of the TV playing games.

1 million would do it. Financially secure, would still have to work but oh well. I derive great enjoyment from watching movies and reading books.

People who wouldn't do it for 10 million are crazy. Unless you are already a millionaire I guess.

With 10 million you could essentially budget travel the rest of your life, you would never have to work again if you spent/invested it wisely.

Not everyone wants travel for rest of their life, yes time to time I like travel for vacation but also like enjoy playing video games and I can easily currently do both even without 10 million.

I don’t need money if it means I have give up on something I love, is not worth it. Life is too short, I rather spend my time doing something I love instead of collect money.

I don't see the point in living if I can't do what I truly love the most. I would have to receive so much money that it would feel immoral not to take it and enrich the lives of my family/others. Like at least 20 million+.

Yeah, I would say $10 mil and up. So both wife and I could quit our jobs in couple of years, pay off the mortgage, put kids in private school, etc…

I guess I would have to learn to watch YouTube/Switch play through of games via playing, but this would leave me time for other hobbies.

I reject the idea of changing who I am in exchange for money. My personal experience has taught me two lessons that come to mind here:

1. The more I've leaned into being myself and rejected being a fake to try to gain something, the better my life has been. Sounds corny, but "be the best verion of you" has 100% been true for me.

2. As my salary has gone up and beyond what I ever thought I could make, the added happiness and lower stress around money quickly plateaued. I make enough to save 20% of my net income every month. I have savings/investments that nearly equal a year of my net income, and I'm on the verge of a promotion that should include around a 20% raise. If I get it, I won't feel anything around the additional salary bump. I'll feel good that I did good work and earned more trust and respect.

A million sounds fine. Giving up videogames would probably be good for me, heh. I don't need the money but it would provide an incentive.

[edit: on second thought, let's make it a billion. I could take that and give it to charity. Save some starving children or something. Probably better than sitting on my ass playing a videogame.]

I'm a rather casual gamer; I only play a few hours a week, even though I'm retired, single, no kids, with abundant free time. I've given up gaming for large stretches of time already, and it's not been a problem. It's just entertainment and distraction for me, nothing more. There are plenty of other forms of entertainment.

Let's be real.
Even 10b is not enough.

You'll be fine for like a month or 2 MAX, but then you'll start to miss it, and you'll regret missing out.
You might end up going down a path where that $10b feels like it came at a severe cost that makes you feel even less happy.
Spoilers: It will

Wouldn't give it up for any amount. Having vast amounts of money is not that important to me as long as I've got enough to get by. Gaming is the only consistent hobby I've done in the last 24(ish) years and I genuinely would not want to give it up for anything.

No amount. There's more to life than money. Wealth is supposed to give you freedom, so there's no point in ammasing it if it requires denying yourself one of the things that brings you the most joy.

Honestly a fascinating question. That would really leave me in a cold sweat deciding. Some real Squid Games shit.

£100k, I would be gutted but it would solve any problems, no gaming expenses gives me enough to aquire another hobby and frankly I think i've seen the best times of gaming already.

This ofcourse is on the understanding that if Quarks.inc bring out a holodeck and a copy of vulcan love slave it is not considered gaming.

I think most of us have had this shower thought. Seriously no amount of money for me as I have no kids. If I did, that would be different.

I really don't know. Video games have been a party of my life since I was under 5. I'm not really sure if I could go without them as I use them to help me with a lot of issues I have now since my daughter passed.

It would be at least the 100 million option that I would then put some actual thought into it

And what would i do with all that money if i can't spend it on my favorite hobby?

Sure, i won't have to work ever again and i will be free and secure. But what else am i going to do with all my extra free time?

Sounds like a monkey paw situation.

I voted 10m but damn it would be a hollow fucking life. I'm not rich, but I don't think I could stop for less than 10.

It's a really good question OP. I hate to even admit it and would love to say I would never sell my love for gaming, and actually I would still watch steams, but 10m would make it where I never had to work again, so I'm not sure I love gaming more than I dislike work....

Honestly, I'd take the 10million but I'd definitely live to regret it. Imagine all the poor souls who have mechanical injury or illness and can't game because of it and they don't get anything but a shrug from the world. It makes me want to donate more to videogame accessibility. Agree with the above poster.
