What the hell is wrong with Idaho?

So we've all heard of the shitty discrimination bills that have been thankfully dying that were started in a disturbing number of states, including Idaho. Looking up more about Idaho in recent news, I discovered some seriously messed up shit:

Idaho lawmakers passing legislation to prevent video evidence of bestiality and other forms of animal abuse from leaking out.

Permitting concealed guns on college campuses.

An enlightening look at hunters in Idaho.

The South will rise again in Idaho, apparently.

Seriously, what is in the water over there? This place looks about as pleasant to visit as Florida.

The most amazing thing about this thread is the fact that I forgot Idaho existed.

I live in Oregon.

We almost got the same concealed gun law in AZ. Never know when you're in lecture and suddenly a gunman might show up.

It is a hotbed of the FreeMen movement.

Freemen will try to claim common law (as opposed to admiralty law) jurisdiction by asking "Do you have a claim against me?" This, they contend, removes their consent to be governed by admiralty law and turns the court into a common law court, so that proceedings would have to go forward according to their version of common law. This procedure has never been used successfully.

:lol

I will step into this thread to say that everything wrong with Idaho can be found in Pocatello. That place is a hell hole.

Here is my handy travel guide for Idaho. If entering from the west on I90, get gas in Spokane Valley, WA. Continue driving until you reach St. Regis, MT, refilling your tank and enjoying some nice huckleberry fudge or ice cream*. If entering from the east simply reverse these directions. Do not enter the state from any other road.

*Really, it's quite good.

Huckleberry everything. Fuck. That stuff is so good. Huckleberry syrup on pancakes. Ugh. Get it in me.

I still love you, Idaho. Even if some of you're people are crazy and fucked up, I can't stay mad at your beautiful mountains.

Idaho is a beautiful state, and one people are fixated on selling short.

The terrain is amazing. Even Boise is more beautiful than big cities of most states.

How could one say no to such beautiful terrain?

I took these photos all within a 15 minute drive from each other in 2008. In Idaho.

It has shit internet. No bars. No cinemas. No libraries. The live music is probably shit too. I can easily say no to that.

This much is true, aside from some of the city like the area surrounding Garden City, Boise is a pretty nice town.

None of this is true if you visit Boise. Well, maybe the internet part might be true, not sure how bad CableOne is these days.

Love Boise and Twin Falls, but the rest of the state can burn. I'm originally from eastern WA and I hate when people (here in western WA mostly) lump in the east side of the state with Idaho. Ugh.

for folks from idaho or who have been there more than I have:

Are the mountains any fun to hike? I like the ones in Montana/Colorado/Appalachia because they're gorgeous and green at the bottom and snowy and pretty at the top.

The pictures I always see are just brown, rocky, dusty mountains, which don't look particularly appealing to visit. :/

Do they still have nazi parades down the street in Coeur d'alene? What a shithole.
I did a quick Google search and came up with nothing recent. The last parade appears to have happened in 2004.

Did they ever have that?
Yes, they did. For at least 3 years and possibly more.

The articles do mention that some of the participants were from out of state and there was a lot of counter demonstrators which seems like good news.

I'm interested in doing a cross country trip and I'd love to drive through Idaho. I've heard whispered rumors of how it might not entirely be safe for me (as a non-white guy) but I've never had the time to really sit down and research the rumors. Idaho-GAF, what say you?

Yes there's lots of places to hike, there is a lot of brown but you can find places. I grew up in Boise, Meridian and it's not a bad place. Fast growing city, not a bad place to raise a family. The schools in Meridian are garbage though, not sure on the other counties.

I lived 20 minutes away from Idaho my whole life. Steer clear if you're not white.

People in Idaho want so bad to be southern confederate conservatives that many people in Idaho inexplicably have fake Southern accents.

Fake Southern accents are disturbingly common outside of Idaho. See: Country music.

It is a hotbed of the FreeMen movement.

Many "Freemen" beliefs are based on idiosyncratic interpretations of Admiralty or Maritime law, which they claim governs the commercial world. These beliefs stem from fringe interpretations of various nautical-sounding words, such as ownership, citizenship, dock, or birth (berth) certificate. Freemen refer to the court as a "ship", the court's occupants as "passengers" and claiming that anyone leaving are "men overboard".
