What was your opinion of Green Army Men as a kid?

How much did you like these toys as a kid?

  • Amazing. Punched way above their weight.

  • They were OK I guess?

  • Cheap. They never appealed to me.

My older brothers had them as a kid, so I saw them later on. Didnt know their were desert coloured ones. My brohers had green versions of the bottom group. Those are old school from probably the 60's or even older.

It must had been sets you buy with all of them because I remember almost all of these models. Didn't really play with them but the bazooka and the guy kneeling with the machine gun tripod were the best.

I grew up with Star Wars figures. Those green army dudes never stood a chance.

Agreed with this. Those two were my fave as well and seemingly the most rare in people's sets, lol.

I also liked the parachute ones they made.

Although I didnt play with them much, one thing I do remember is they were durable. The plastic was soft enough so the thin parts like the guns, tripod etc... held up well bending. The box of this stuff we had in the basement seemed to have the soldiers with all their guns still attached.

My friend Richy used to have loads, hes a dirty cunt, he used to put them on his helmet, pull hes foreskin over them then mix them back in with the othere so you didnt know what ones were clean. He done it with haribo aswell and put them back in the bag and laugh then hes parents started eating them.

Loved them. Not as much as my friend, and I was never allowed them myself, but whenever I went over this his we'd play with them a bit.

And I loved the Army Men games. Go Sarge! And that I was absolutely not allowed. The same friend burnt me a copy and when my mum found me playing it at home, she went berserk*. Snapped the CD in half.

*Context: It seems my grandfather suffered a lot in WWII (he was in North Africa during the bad and 'good' times, and was one of the liberators of some of the concentration camps) and the hatred of war got passed down onto my mum.

Everyone had them somehow, but yeah they were junk. Why would any kid waste their time on these in a world where GI Joes, Star Wars figures, Transformers etc etc. existed.

I assume I had some but I never really played with them. I was into G.I. Joe, Lego (space and medieval sets), and X-Men action figures.

I never owned any myself. I preferred small Lego and Playmobil sets for the money. I think my mom disliked them too. Friends did have them and they were fine as fodder for Transformers to blast. It always bothered me that the vehicles like tanks and jeeps (which were often included) were not at all to scale.

I always thought they were kind of lame to be honest.

Well maybe not “lame”, perhaps I’m being unkind. But I had articulated Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca dolls to mess around with, a bucket full of uniform coloured army men with wonky bases that you had to bend into shape so they would stand up properly felt kind of disposable, even to my prepubescent mind.

But perhaps that was the point to my 10 year old self; these expendable army men with their poorly formed bases and poorly trimmed mould lines are yours to use and bend to your will, they’ll never be the heroes in your dreamed up conflict but such is modern warfare…

🤔

Why would anyone play with Green Army Men when we had:
gi joe america GIF
'murica = the whole world. bullshit american propaganda toys don't really do well unless it's the USA.

I'm calling the election early. The Pro Green Army Men contingent have won convincingly and are thus in power for the next 4 years. Congratulations fellow sophisticated children, we did it!

All you GI Joe nerds and people lukewarm on the green army man can go kick rocks!

I had some bigger 6-8" ones at my grandpas house from when my mom and uncle were kids. They were Native Americans, Japanese, and German soldiers from WW2. I just shot them with my bb gun. They were cool for that. The mini ones weren't that neat.

Never had any because my mom didn't like war themed toys.
But a lot of my friends had them and I always liked them (though it was probably mostly because I couldn't have them). The ones with parachute in particular were always cool.

They were filler toys for me. You had them and would mess with them when you were super young but the other toys I had available back then were much more interesting.

Though I remember my army men bucket had a couple that were posed as being shot. I'd imagine those don't get included in these things anymore. =P

edit: It was either this or one really similar

Because my parents could not afford quality licensed toys but I was able to swap "junk toys" and candy easily for handfuls of green army men becuse of how common and undervalued they were.

Great toys, I had a ton of them and a ton of medieval Knights n such as well. I built mighty fortresses out of cardboard and books and whatever was on hand.
Required a bit of imagination, which is sorely lacking in the digital age.

These were a blast with a friend. You’d just get lost in setting up your army around a bedroom/living room “base”.

Friend 1: “I’m putting all my prone guys down here so they can peek and see when enemies are coming.”

Friend 2: “Cool (aka yeah, okay whatever). Look, we have a giant cat guarding our base.”

Used to play with them while humming this theme when I did..

You guys are probably too young to remember - I barely remember the re-runs, but the theme song always stuck with me. :)

Anyway, they were more of my older brother's thing - I was rather more into SF like giant robots and all.

A lot of people had them because their older siblings had them so they got passed down. They started selling in the 1950s.

I remember being very young and my grandmother gifted them. Then my teenager uncle melted them with a lighter making a weird running blob!
Since then I knew I wanted to be an artist! Lol
