What's left for the GCN?

Why do most assume that Twilight Princess will be stellar? A lot of were greatly disappointed by TWW, but it seems to be accepted as a given that TP will be phenomenal. Are you just judging it by the art style, by press releases, or what?

The fact that it's Aonuma and the fact that they're taking so long with it. If TWW was rushed, and it took about 2 years to make, then 3 years for TP should mean it'll be fantastic.

Yes. I know The Doug. Given the fact they put extra time into this one, I'm guessing it turns out to be one of the better Zeldas, maybe the best?

I just wanted to nip that criticism of Drinky before it kicked off in earnest because I know that for all his DS bluster, he'll still play great Nintendo games.

Not much, but I'm looking forward to playing Chibi Robo, Odama, Naruto, Baten Kaitos II, Sonic Riders, and of course, TP.

Aonuma's been pretty "meh" with MM and WW, but this time, Zelda: TP has the backing of Miyamoto himself putting in more effort in a game since OCARINA! So they're little doubt this will be stellar.

As for the topic, there's Zelda obviously, and Baten Kaitos 2. I don't give a damn that there's only 2 good games coming out this year for the GC. The fact that one of them is Zelda immediately kicks the shit out of 2005's entire lineup. I'd rather play one tremendously awesome game than dozens of mediocre ones (barring an exception or two like FE: PoR :) )

Miyamoto is not putting in more effort since Ocarina. Infact, Miyamoto is even more removed. However the development team has a much longer development time on Twilight Princess than they did on Majora's Mask or Wind Waker.

Plus Aonuma is going for a very visually appealing style that will appease those have been awaiting the more action-based and epic Zelda.

Wrongo! Shiggy specifically stated he's doing more hands on stuff with TP than he has in since Ocarina (or a good while).

are you deliberately snubbing re4, or are you forgetting that it came out in 2005? :x

Good god! Terribly sorry about that. :( I don't know why, but I forgot it came out in 2005.

If you read his E3 interview you will hear exactly what his involvement is on Zelda and it definitely isn't more hands on than since Ocarina. In Ocarina of Time he was the producer (not director) and now he is the General Producer (not the producer, director). I mean it really isn't a big deal, he isn't a game director and not a level designer anymore. He does mainly supervising, time tables, and R&D management now. So does Tezuka.

Sigh. You are correct about the E3 thing, but Shiggy did mention a little something afterwards:

Please allow me to interrupt you by saying that you will have to be patient, really. This will be, without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form. I worked on it personally, moreso than Wind Waker! I haven't invested as much into any game as I have this one. Our goal was to make the best Zelda game ever. The most rich/satisfying and melancholy. We've really improved it in just a few months. Everything's coming together much quicker. We may have some last minute ideas...

Told ya. :)

Also, I know Shiggy hasn't went under the "director" credit since Mario 64, but he put in 60% into Ocarina, so it didn't matter too much that he was just a producer.

I think I'll have to murder you more than usual today.

Hey, I liked MM, but after playing Ocarina, well, you know. :)

I'm really beginning to think that Zelda TP will release 3-4 months before the Revolution launches and then be a pack-in game with that system.....

Why aonuma directing TP will somehow ensure it being an awesome game? He directed WW and that's one of the least popular Zelda games. And I think n-sider (not sure) reported he's only producing TP and it's being handled by a new director anyway.

Yeah, he's competent, and above average, but not legendary.

It was assumed that Aonuma was producing it in 2004, but recently it was mentioned that he's a director now.

Definites:

If by new tv, you mean a HDtv? Don't. RE4 looks better on a standard CRT tv.

The Gamecube era is over for me. I sold mine (kept a few games though), and all I have now is my DS & my anticipation for the Rev. Twilight Princess will be playable on the Rev, and it's backwards compatible with the GCN, so I'm not going to miss out on anything. It's going to be a long wait, though :(.

The Gamecube wasn't the best system this gen obviously, but it had some badass games (from Nintendo & it's third party collaboratives) that I will have fond memories of in the years to come.

Well I dunno, but to me what's left for the GCN is at least more interesting than what's left for the Xbox:

- Baten Kaitos II (liked the first one very much and the second one looks promising)
- Chibi Robo (hope it gets a EU release, concept sounds fun and innovative)
- Donkey Konga 3 (nice for the fans, or if you still want to try it out once)
- Giftpia (they should release it outside JPN, even though it'll probably become a nich title)
- Harvest Moon: Magical Melody (well yeah, nice for the peeps who like it)
- Homeland (same story as with Giftpia, though I doubt this one very much since hardly anyone has ever bought a broadband adapter afaik)
- Kirby Adventure (really hard to judge this one since we only got screens up 'till now, could've become a Rev launchgame)
- Mario Party 7 (still a nice game to pick up for a budget price, very useful to play with "non-gamers")
- Naruto: Clash of Ninja (seems it's actually gonna be released outside JPN, not very interested in it myself)
- Nintendo Puzzle Collection (just release it outside of JPN, some people might like it)
- Odama (another really innovative game that sounds fun)
- Pennant Chase Baseball (why hasn't this game been released yet? did they move it to Rev as a launchtitle?)
- Zelda: Twilight Princess (if the game will be as stellar as many expect it to be, this will make more than up for the drought)

- Mega Man X Collection (very nice indeed, don't know if I'll pick it up though)
- Sonic Riders (yeah well, even though the previous 3D Sonic games weren't anything to speak of, this might turn out good)
- Splinter Cell: Double Agent (X360 version is most likely for me, still nice it's coming to GCN)

Well, that's about it. All in all, I thought the GCN had a fairly decent life. The support it received both 1st and 3rd party was a bit supbar and EAD definatly underperformed on the most part, but it did have some gems and purely focussing on exclusives, I liked it more than the Xbox. I personally thought that Smash Bros., Pikmin 2, Paper Mario: TTD, Resident Evil 4, Fire Emblem and Metroid Prime were absolutely fantastic games and of the level we'd expect from a Nintendo machine (even though they're not all from Nintendo). Other really good and fun games were Mario Power Tennis, Battalion Wars, Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2, Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, Eternal Darkness (yes, I liked it despite it's problems), Baten Kaitos, WarioWare, Donkey Konga 1 & 2, Metroid Prime 2, Zelda:FSA, Soul Calibur II (sadly the only really good fighter for the system), Tales of Symphonia, Resident Evil (Zero to a lesser extend), Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2, Final Fantasy:CC (should be rather fun in multiplayer), MGS:TTS, Pikmin, Mario Golf and also the likes of Zelda: TWW, Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart: DD (even though they all underperformed compared to their predecessors). Luckily it also received some nice 3rd party titles like the Splinter Cell and PoP series and BG&E from Ubisoft, the SSX games from EA, Tony Hawk titles from Activision, the first two Burnouts and the last two Timesplitters iterations.

Still, it gets completely obliterated by the PS2. Even if we don't count multiplatform. IMO, the PS2 is simply in a league of it's own this gen. Just taking a look at it's upcoming releases for this year, confirms this for me. Major releases like Rogue Galaxy, Kingdom Hearts II, Final Fantasy XII, Grandia III, Black, MGS3: Subsistence, Tourist Trophy, Ryu Ga Gotoku (hopefully) and Okami, are complemented by other promising and interesting titles like Shadow Hearts 3, FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus, Seiken Densetsu 4 (if it gets a release outside of JPN), Onimusha 4, Ace Combat Zero, Tales of the Abyss (maybe), Phantasy Star Universe, GTA:LCS (heh), Valkyrie Profile: Sylmeria, Marc Ecko's Getting Up, Rise of the Kasai, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, StarCraft: Ghost, Hitman: Blood Money, SEGA Rally 2006, Outrun 2006, Fight Night Round 3, Suikoden V, Tales of Legendia, Bully, Ape Escape 3 and other titles that could turn out good like Wild ARMs 4 & 5 (4 has just been released), Sonic Riders, Commandos: Strike Force, Mega Man X Collection, FlatOut 2, Forbidden Siren 2, Driver Parallel Lines, Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers and Battlestations: Midway will all see the light of day this very year. It's like the PS3 isn't even coming yet. Hell, for Europe this might even turn out to become the single best PS2 year ever (or current-gen year in general), since they'll also still be getting SotC, Psychonauts, We Love Katamari and Dragon Quest VIII (though they wont get Grandia III). That's just insane!

*goes on idolizing his PS2*

yeah what was the whole deal with the widescreen thing again?

The game wasn't really rendering in full widescreen, just borders letterboxing it. When played on a widescreen t.v. you would have boarders on all sides, left and right, not just top and bottom. Just imagine if you had a rectangle of 4:3 dimensions of exact height to a 16:9 rectangle and placing it into the 16:9 rectangle borders and all. The best you could do to compensate was zoom in, but you're just blowing up the lower than 640x480 resolution in an HDtv, which isn't that friendly to stardard 640x480 resolutions as is.
