Not to mention, they kicked the guy that started the band and who was the real genius of the bunch (Syd Barrett) to the curb.
Gross oversimplification of the themes in WYWH and The Wall, imo.

And saying that they just kicked Syd to the curb as if for shits n giggles is being dishonest or is said out of ignorance. Have you read about his deterioration and how long they put up with him never showing up to gigs, or showing up unfit to play, or zoning out and just playing a single note the entire time? I mean at some point you just have to let someone like that go, no matter how talented he was in the past.

He was borderline catatonic, dude. Plus, is there anything to illustrate that Barrett wouldn't have made them sound almost exactly like the Beatles? I think they were better off doing their own thing, even though they didn't want to and made every effort to connect with Syd and help him out.

Anyway, I'd start with Dark Side of the Moon because it's very accessible, but I'm sure you guys can tell which my favorite album is by my username.

As far as my recommendations go, it's too cliche to say Dark Side and The Wall. Granted, they're masterpieces. Can't-miss stuff. They should basically go without saying.

Rather, I'd suggest starting with Obscured by Clouds and Atom Heart Mother. They're supremely good rock, OBC being a bit harder in tone than the standard Floyd fare. AHM has the fantastic 20-minute Atom Heart Mother Suite. If you dig that, check out Meddle for Echoes, another epic anthem.

Syd was pretty fucked up near the end. At gigs he would suddenly stop playing his guitar, take it off and just stand there on stage. He was in no state to be playing in a band and needed help. They brought Dave in and were a 5-piece band for a little while, but Syd was long gone by then.

As Roger said "Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky."
