What's the deal with teraflops?

phil-rocket-launcher.jpg

It seems that teraflops will determine who will win the Next Gen War, according to NeoGAF.

Let me tell you a little secret: It won't.

History
has shown us that sheer power isn't the only determining factor when it comes to console wars.

Factors such as console exclusives, first party studios, quality of manufacturing, and brand support also determine the outcome of console wars.

So what's the deal with teraflops, GAF?

My take of what I feel will be the bigger factor for gaming than floppy dick measuring.

TFlops is something that literally only matters on enthusiast forums/boards. Nobody else cares, and the average person has no clue what that means. Just like a ton of people don't care about frame rate either.

Stop. Teraflops are like a nuclear weapon. Totally unrealistic.

This video triggered the fuck out of me. Dude was in the SAS and doesn't know what a M202 is? Let alone calling it a nuclear weapon.

It reminds me of when I was a kid and we'd all argue about the systems and their "bits." The Jaguar was 64-bit, so you do the math. The Playstation coming out is only 32-bit, so I am not e for that piece of shit.

I am not just buying into flops , i am buying into the ecosystem which is more important to me.
Back comp, type of games, genres, good and fast os and store app etc.

For the console warriors hoping for first place sales, you should actually hope your system of choice is not the most powerful.

Only for a few stretches of time have the most powerful system also match being the best sales

Off the top of my head

- SNES during the second half of the era when it blew past Mega Drive/Genesis (Sega had a head start)
- PS4 OG years which outsold Xbox One right off the bat, but then in terms of power both PS4 and Pro got crushed by X

Every other generation, had a less powerful system winning the sales race.

Hell, Wii was console with last gen power barely better than a Gamecube and it flew by 360 and PS3.

Precisely. No one will. Give the people Bloodbourne 2, Spiderman 2, God of War 2 etc and people won't give a fuck if the next Xbox is more powerful.

Console wars over tf is right up the awkward and cringe leaderboards, together with "X's 10 Teraflops are like Y's 20 Teraflops!" aka arguing about relative power while totally ignoring the meaning of Teraflops to begin with 😂.

I mean how do people think they can compare consoles based on tf if they can't even grasp the concept of what a flop actually is. Mind blowing.

I feel a lot of people focus on TFlops because they think the PS4 take over the Xbox One due to the performances difference. What they forget is that:
- ps4 was more powerful
-ps4 was cheaper
-Xbox one PR was a disaster with the always online shit badly damaged controlled.

It's pretty simple and it's undeniable really, does it decide a generation? No, but the hardware being the best it can possibly be IS the most important aspect of the console itself so naturally you want it to have the highest specifications.

This is completely abstract of games, and people need to learn how to decouple the two.

Ask anyone if they would rather watch the exact same movie on VHS or Bluray but they don't know why one has vastly better quality than the other.

So, in essence, we don't know what the fuck we're talking about, are we?

The console with the more TFs basically gives its platform owners bragging rights against the non-owners in the message boards. But in all seriousness, I'd like both consoles to be equal so that the multiplat games won't suffer for it.

People generally want more power as that equals to more possibilites. Bigger worlds, more emotions being expressed, more butts being able to jiggle etc. I cared a lot of about graphics ten years ago, but not anymore. Since graphics have already become so good, I focus more on gameplay and input lag now.

PS2 and Wii demonstrated that flops are not the only determining factor for a console's success. In some cases, a power differential can be relevant though, for instance with PS4 & Xbox One, where the Xbox One was initially more expensive, yet less powerful (and on top of that had the stigma of Microsoft's consumer hating bullshit), where it contributed to the narrative that Xbox One is the objectively worse choice. If Xbox SX really is 12TF vs. PS5 9TF, then I do think this will be relevant, for performance and visual fidelity between games. The difference between Xbox and PlayStation versions of multiplatform releases would likely be much more pronounced than this gen. However, if the Xbox then ends up 100€ (or more) more expensive than PS5, then this can quickly become irrelevant.

It's the modern day BIT wars.
16-bit days. Blast Processing vs Mode 7

32-bit days. Polygons/second

2000s? I don't know. Probably something to do with cpus like Cell vs. PowerPC. Nobody was talking about GFlops or TF

Now. TF count

In 2030. Who knows. Maybe which system can play games and also toast bread the fastest

Discussing TFlops reminds me when I would get in heated discussions in 6th grade about if SNES was better or Genesis. Its SOOOO LAME.

It's a bunch of people that think they know what they're talking about but have no fucking clue. No difference from the SNES vs Sega the bit wars or the Atari Jaguar do the math adverts about it being 64bit.

They see one number is bigger than the "competition" and they use it as a talking/boasting point.

You can have the must powerful console in the world but it doesn't mean shit if there's a lack of titles people want to play.

Maybe, so that we all learn something:
Mega, Giga, Tera, Peta, Exa- We are far far away from Ultra@8K, 144 hz gaming

At the end of the day it will always come down to games.

For one console to really take the lead over another based on performance alone you would need to see massive, obvious, differences.

So if the new XBox launches with a new Halo game and it is a legitimate top tier game then it's hardly going to matter if Playstation is offering a slightly better looking or better running Destiny 3 or Elder Scrolls VI etc.

Same if the new Playstation is launching with Horizon 2 and promises of Spider-Man, God of War and Bloodborne sequels then it won't really matter if XBox can say that their console has marginally better performance.

The thing for me is how much of a gap in performance would there have to be before the game library becomes irrelevant?

Comparing Nintendo Switch to XBox One there is a considerable gap in performance yet the Switch is selling more because of the available games.

For the gaming industry as a whole I think it would be beneficial if Microsoft came in and completely blew Sony away this upcoming generation.
I just don't see it happening though.

Back in the day power was measured by how many polygons a console could put out. Then is was fully shaded polygons, and then demos sold the potential of systems.
Then Sony just bullshitted on how powerful their systems were, and put out fake CGI clips as demos and ruined it for everyone.

If Sony has more TFs then it's the most important thing ever.
If MS has more TFs then it's not worth a damn thing and meaningless.

Seriously though, the damage control of the Sony defense force is so damn pathetic. Wow.

DF threads are going to be so funny, when nextgen launches. Can't wait. :D
