Whats wrong with MP's controls

Seems like everyone on GAF keeps slamming the controls. Within the context of the game they seem to me more than adequate.

Anyway whats wrong with them?

Not again...

People don't like the controls because they're not the customary controls for a FPS, and you can't customize the controls for dual-analog. That's it.

Also known as the prelude to "Metroid Prime is a First Person Adventure/Metroid Prime is a First Person Shooter".

Well, put me in that camp as well, but I can still see why some people don't like them nor care to get accustomed to them.

I can see why as well.

Still, I think it fits so perfectly that it's absurd to not give it a chance :P

Also, I think that Metroid Prime's jumping system is the best ever used in a FPS. The whole "Samus looks down slightly" when she jumps thing is beyond brilliant.

I'm with the "I don't mind the controls much, but remove the excessive stupid scanning and provide a better medium to progress the story" camp.

*runs*

I think even if they capitulated and added standard FPS controls it still wouldn't be that fun. So...I guess the GAF camp is just varied on this one!

I can see why they may not like them initially, but its the inability for them to adapt within five minutes of play that astounds me to no end. I'm not a hardcore FPS player, but going from Halo 2 to Metroid Prime 2 simply is not a problem for me in terms of controls.

Maybe its just because I'm more used to Metroid series and its not really trying that hard to be a FPS, but a Metroid game instead. FPS fans come in expecting an FPS, but that's not really what Metroid game is.

I don't go into soccer games expecting baseball, do you?

Thats just it, its not an FPS its an adventure game like Zelda.
Would you need dual analog in a Zelda game?

The game never asks you do anything beyond the limits of the control scheme.

I couldn't understand why Metroid Prime's controls was such an issue before. I always thought the controls for Prime were fine. Before Prime I hadn't played Halo or any console FPS for months.

Recently after playing a lot of Halo 2, I got used to the dual analog again. I played Prime 2 once and the controls felt funny. So now I can understand where the control hate comes from.

I don't think MP controls are brilliant but they do get the job done. A lot of people complain about the lack of free look. It would have been nice if they could have included it somehow, but personally there weren't many times it was needed. Retro did a really good job with the level designs, making sure things were easy to see and understand without the need for a free look. So the criticism there is kinda moot.

Try jumping foward, looking for grapple point and then grappling at the same time. You can do it, of course, but it is clumsy.

Not to fuel this stale debate... but count me in as well...

I love when a control scheme has as much personality as the art direction + the 'Jumping Flash' like jumping worked wonders.
