When is too much personal information on internet forums too much?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Is there something wrong with posting personal information on internet message boards such as GAF? Where do you draw the line when it comes to personal information?

I think all personal information is allowed as long as it's a topic of interest. These circle jerk threads about pictures of your cat should be reserved to your livejournal rant.

Despite posting on this forum, I'd like to think that there is noble cause in visiting internet message boards: trying to grow throught conversations and debates. However, a person can grow throught experience, good or bad, wether it be in real life or "on the internet." So by posting more personal information on the internet, you affirm your presence and make things more 'real' which makes you prone to having experiences on the internet which are a bit closer to the ones you get in real life.

Is there a noble cause for posting on message boards at all? Do we learn anything useful by having an "internet life/reputation" or is it just a big waste of time?

I think it'd be an exceptionally rare case if I'm ever caught doing so much as posting a picture of myself in a public thread. Anyone with enough energy to do some menial detective work can probably dig up a lot of stuff about me - which is scary - but I try to keep a lot of things as general as possible.

In fact, there's only one person on this entire forum who knows what I look like, and that's simply because we know each other outside of the GAF.

No offense meant to anyone, but I still wonder why there are people that come and post at a VIDEO GAME site's off-topic forum, barely ever (if at all) posting in the gaming forum, instead of at a community board with the purpose of more "off-topic" style discussion as its main focus.

The gaming is - to varying degrees, obviously - a sort of common bond. I started off in the gaming forum, but kind of just got sucked into the OT and its [melo]drama within a few months.

I don't know, why don't you read some of the normal (non-dramatic) discussions here and see for yourself. I split time between both forums, but I'll discuss basketball, football, or baseball with mig, fifty, dmc, cloudy, incog etc. and the crew all day, and it's way better in every single way than any sports message board I've been on. Same goes for most other subjects too. Sure if you only read the Serafitia and other controversial posts, it seems stupid, but most of the discussions here aren't about any of that crap.

what makes a forum is not the theme, but the people who post in it.

^^^ So if you enjoy the people, the opinions, the topics, etc. then it's not a waste of time. I've learned so much shit from GA just because it's a big board of people without inhibitions and everyone contributing. If you don't want to post about your cat then fine but I don't mind if you do. Also, some people are just damn funny and I want to see their take on stuff happening in the world. And usually, they tell me before I ever know it happened.

What if I like listening to a Britney Spears CD, or smoking weed, is it not a waste of time?

I know forums can be fun, but do they offer more than just shits and giggles?

For me it's convenience. i don't have the time to find another forum with good moderation and lurk there for a while to get a feel for the place. If i made the time, i'd probably spend more time on the PC, seeing as how lately little bits of people online have been more interesting than larger bits of people offline.

Plus the gaming forum sucks at the moment. A thread every six hours based on a poorly-translated article or rumor about Revolution, tired DS-PSP disputes, "Wouldn't it be cool if..."/"You know what needs to happen?" fanboy wet dream threads, and then the depressing "EA acquires exclusive rights to..." threads.

To GAF's credit, it's probably been pretty valuable to me in that I've been exposed to a whole lot of information, opinions, and experiences that I wouldn't have otherwise. So many people have a social life and then a home life where they may speak to an exclusive amount of people at varying times. I have my social life and then GAF (if it sounds like I'm suggesting that GAF is my "home life" - well, it is to some extent, but not really) where there are dozens of people from different backgrounds that I listen to and speak to (in a way). It's funny that as much as I sit in front of my computer and read/type, it's probably improved how I speak and relate to people IRL. Initially the internet (several years ago) was an escape as I didn't like my high school or even my friends, but still needed to 'communicate' in some way. Now it's become something that contributes to my actual life, and probably in a meaningful way. I'm really well-spoken and sharp (do I sound conceited? ok, but this is the truth) and I wouldn't doubt that this forum (for all that I've read and typed) has probably played a part in that, surprising as it is. A few years ago I would have thought that this was an obstacle to social skills.

Also, 'fraid to say it, but posting here can be... fun. A lot of you guys are hilarious as shit and I like joking around myself. Not to mention that, besides all the drama that can riddle this forum at times, a lot of the topics are really interesting and unique. There's nothing that I say here that I don't tell my friends, but few of them, for instance, want to talk about politics or simply care as much as I do. So GAF provides an awesome outlet for things such as that.

Well, what's the difference? GAF has become as much a community board from the off-shoot than one with the sole intention.

-edit- Funny that after making this post I had a feeling like: I think I'm ready to leave now. Kind of like the dead people from The Sixth Sense... or something.

Depends on the person.

In my case, well, I'm very unwilling to reveal any sensitive information about myself. In part that's because I'm a private person.

But I also recognise that I'm in a unique position. I'm treated differently. For pretty much every poster on this (or any other) board, revealing what you look like, where you live, where you work or study, etc. is no biggie. People read about you and move on.

But for me, it's different. I'm considered 'speshul'. People commit what I write to memory. Everything. They become obsessive. Stalking, impersonation - the works.

That's partly why this forum is so refreshing. Very few people know anything about me, or even give a fuck - and I hope it stays that way.

sorry but I couldn't help myself, is this a joke?

why are you special (unless you're talking about a handicap or something) and why mention it unless you actually really wanted people to know you're special and to threat you differently?

Call it growing out of a hobby, proritizing, or just plain growing up, but arguing about video games, or most things in general, is just pointless to me. i make a statement, respond to a few valid oppositions to it, then leave. i see people in these threads arguing about stuff like mainstream and hardcore gamers go on for pages back and forth and think "okay, so what was accomplished?" Even if everyone in a thread agrees with you, how does that make your life better? At the end of the day, we're mostly just a bunch of guys with a consumer's seat view of the gaming world, and all the sales numbers and retail experience ain't gonna change that, or the masses interests. But hey, if people want to spend their time talking about the industry, it's their interest and their business

On the other hand, i go to OT and see threads about, say, relationships, and occasionally come away with some new insights. i see mistakes that i made and possible ways to improve on them. i don't get that from the gaming forum, but in all fairness, it's a forum dedicated to a form of entertainment.

i've done that from time to time myself. It's usually not for shock value, but the fact that there's simply some things i feel more comfortable talking about here than with people in my circle, especially given the fact that i'm in a small city where everyone knows everyone else. When you're surrounded by people who are more forward about portions of their life than people in real life are, you feel a bit easier about throwing something out, maybe in hopes of getting some real feedback out of it.

Those questions aren't redundant.

1. Are you joking?
2. What makes you special?
3. If you are special and don't want to be bothered about it, why did you mention it?

They actually complement each other perfectly well.

Holy shit, I actually agree with you.

The gaming forum on this site used to be my main reason for coming here. It was and still is a great source for the latest videogame news. Unfortunately general discussion over on the Gaming side of Gaming-Age has taken a nose dive when compared to as shortly ago as last summer.

I blame all the new members. The Gaming-Forum is starting to look like an IGN or GameFaqs forum. Mostly because of new members who don't make any attempt to cause constructive discussion while making new threads. A lot of them are just assholes. Take this guy for example: http://forums.gaming-age.com/showthread.php?t=30342&page=1&pp=50

The gaming forum is too full of threads like these:

http://forums.gaming-age.com/showthread.php?t=32114

People can't contain these types of opinions into one, relevant thread. Instead they feel as though what they have to say is important enough to be plastered on the front page so it doesn't have to compete with other posts to get a readers attention.

Ah, you're probably here for entertainment and/or attention. So post what you will, as much as you care to.

Just don't be a dullard about it. If you have to lie to yourself and others on the video game message board, you're a dullard. If you have to get your attention by making others feel like crap, you're a dullard. Be honest, be a little polite. It's not that hard.
