When video game journalism gets it wrong.

I will do my analysis of The Dark pictures Switchback. I finished the game recently, I must say that it is a good game that teaches the virtues of PS VR 2, the shotter looks very good and it is basically watching a horror show, but with good sound, movement and horror effects . It has good moments of decisions...

They say it looks blurry and it's not true, the game looks good and what's important, it's fun.

What I can say is that a little variety in the enemies or Boss would be a good addition... But still, I highly recommend it.

My rating is 8.

Unlike Horizon Call of the Mountain, I found it to be a very boring mountain climbing simulator.

Who even reads/considers game "journalist" opinions today, they're just PR companies for publishers.

I havnt decided to buy a game based on these idiots reviews since I got burnt by buying Dragon Age Inquisition in 2014 and finding it a POS.

I stopped reading review articles many, many years ago ever since Youtube came around. Now I just watch gameplay clips or streamers and then make up my mind on whether or not the game is worthy of my attention.

There are some brands or companies where I'm very fiercely loyal to that whatever it is they release, I'll automatically buy it bc I know its going to be good regardless.

Besides the being loyal part... except for me, maybe loyal to genius kojumbo.

Everything else you say is absolutely correct. How people think a number is of any importance when you can easily watch a gameplay impression and know mostly how a game is going to play.

What's important today is how these games physically run on hardware

There's been several updates since game launched including visuals. I played it at launch, wouldn't call it also blurry but my main issue was I beat it under 2h

Been going on since forever. They used to be just bad takes but now they’re sitting there with a DEI tickbox.

I remember an unofficial PlayStation magazine in the UK that reviewed GTA 3 and basically said it was rubbish. They ended up re reviewing it with a better score a month or so later. Wish I could remember who it was.

Where's the IGN "you can't tell the difference between 240p and 1080p unless you have a 75" TV crammed into your face gif" when you need it.

The best way, as far it goes for me, is to wait 3 months after a game releases for the PR fog to clear, user reviews to accumulate and reality to assert itself.

I'm willing to bet dragon age mysteriously becomes a consensus 6.5-7 a few months from now. Critics will be gaslighting hard on that one.

Hmmmm... that thread title certainly jumps out of the screen vs something like "LTTTP: The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR" might, lol.

They say it looks blurry and it's not true, the game looks good and what's important, it's fun.

The reason for the thread is that we are the analysts and uncover the lies of the journalism.
If this thread is a piss take, some parody of paranoid fuckwittery and it whooshed right on over my head, then sorry; I clearly fell for it.

If not, then, ummm... please look at the state the game was in before/at release - the game as it was reviewed at the time - then look how that improved massively with patch 1.06 visually.

I'd rather read impressions from a couple places from people instead of reading the garbage the usual sites do.

Sometimes a person just doesn't like a game. It's not wrong to dislike a game. What matters is if the person reviews it in good faith and taking it for what it is. Like the M&L IGN review posted in this thread, nothing seems bad or objectionable in the review, he is a fan of the series, he lays out his problem with the game, he scores it based on that.

What is wrong is when these people outright lie and misrepresent to make a point, like when Eurogamer made up a guy in their Kingdom Come Deliverance review to try to make a point about the lack of black people in the game.

Game journos are the worst part of the industry

To most it's just a way to earn money, not a passion
When I was in games journalism it was absolutely to make money. It was my full time job and I had to pay rent lol

Nothing wrong with that imo. Just so long as it’s actually good and unbiased journalism.

I mean, every work exists to make money. But in this industry you should at least like playing games

He doesn’t have to necessarily like it, he just has to know what he’s talking about.

Alex from Nextlander/Giant Bomb (and formerly Gamespot) was usually given the shittier games to review moreso than others when he was working under Gamespot, which would make anyone potentially hate video games over time. However his opinion was usually respected because he gave legitimate reasons as to why he gave the lower scores he did and why he was much harsher of a reviewer.

Once people saw him play games on quick looks they quickly realized that he is a decently skilled and very knowledgable gamer who just got bad games handed to him for years. It’s also why Vinny’s positivity would usually balance him out on podcasts.

And I can confirm my theory.

A 5?! Concord got a 7 but this gets a 5?! Very out of line with the rest of reviews, I'll need to play it for myself but I sincerely doubt it's worse than a 7. Reminds me of the time IGN gave Octopath Traveller 2 a 7 and people still give them shit about it on the YouTube video lol.

The reason for the thread is that we are the analysts and uncover the lies of the journalism.

There are games that rate poorly and are great.

Let's never forget the 7 score of Nier.... Nor the 5 of Alien isolation.
Switchback and Rush of Blood are both great. Switchback was in my opinion a good spiritual successor to Rush of Blood and if you enjoyed the prequel then it was a no brainer. The thing about reviews is that they're opinions. Yours and mine wouldn't always align with the general concensus. Add to that there are other things at play both with user reviews and outlet reviews which have no bearing on the games enjoyability. Sometimes even outlets get caught up in nonsense where they don't want to go against the flow of the river or have other agendas at play.
