When your video card dies...

What happens, exactly? I have a 9800 Pro. It has a pretty dinky fan. I'm willing to bet that the fan will die someday when I'm not around and the comp is on. Does it catch on fire? Or simply not function properly? What happened to you when you left your comp unattended and your card died?

From experiance with my GF 4 Ti 4600.

Fan goes out
Card really gets hot, processor starts to get really hot to the point it will fucking burn you.
Next you get a little blue cloud of smoke and then shit just starts to short out. Yeah it happens and it could damage your motherboard.

Just get a new fan or RMA it.

I love EGM
4600 did the same thing, my computer just turned off though thankfully after it start fucking up and glitching :)

never found a fan that fit it right so i just stuck one on there and held it together with some bread bag twisty ties.

I read that because printed circuit board is very flame resistant, the card will prolly just burn itself out, and a flame would only be evident for a couple seconds. My mobo should shut everything down once it hits 85C (the CPU that is).

The card works fine, but I know it won't last forever. So I'm just asking other people what happened to theirs.

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
Your PC will shut itself down. But you will be able to use your mobo's onboard video once you remove the card, restart the PC and configure your mobo to use its video.

If u fear that the cards fan is gonna die on u soon, why not just rma the card? Dont take the chance becuase it might burn out the agp slot on your motherboard aswell and then you'll be royally screwed.

Cool pics. I've seen that before on PC's that have a bad PSU fan.

rc213: nah. I can get another board for like $50 and my card is under newegg warranty for a loooong time.

Plus, like I said, my card is fine, but I know this dinky little fan will not last forever.

The scourge of the 9800 Pro continues.

I'd actually have been pleased if my 98 had caught fire, because that would have been it right there and I could stop all this "I'm gonna burn it, I'm gonna grill it, Oh wait that'll fuck up the grill, Does Dark10x still want it?" talk I've been doing.

The screen shots posted accurately portray what mine started to do right before I replaced it with a 6800GT; as if it knew it was inevitable, that I wanted to beat Doom3, and it had to get it's licks in.

It was wrong of me to switch to ATI. I mean, the FX series was shit, but maybe I should have just held out. This little 9800 Pro saga was pure karma. I promise I'll be good from now on.
