Where do you guys go to hire freelance coders?

I've been looking around online, and I've used e-lance in the past for freelance stuff, but apparently they've been bought out buy upwork.com which I have no experience with. Ideally I'd like a site that vets people in some manner. I'm also trying to avoid hiring agencies like Robert Half because of their shitty practices, if possible. I'd like as much money to go to the coder as possible without the middle man molesting it first.

Anybody here have experience working with any particular platform?

Have you considered hiring people from other countries?

I'd say India is a good place for coding, but I don't know... Highly educated Brazilians are usually pretty good, and the US Dollar is on a record high when compared to the Brazilian Real (the country's currency), meaning you and the coder can both get a good deal.

I work for a Canadian company from home (in Brazil), same deal.

Frankly I don't care where the worker is from, but I do have security concerns that they are vetted as much as can be expected without going through a proper hiring agency. Even if I were to hire in India or Brazil, where would I go to search?

Do it yourself via LinkedIn.

Get a month of premium, shit out a load of inmails to people who you think might fit the bill and then vet them however you want to.

Before doing this however make sure you are willing to pay in line with what would be expected dependant on what country the people you're approaching are living in. If you're not willing to pay market rate then you're better off just using platforms like upwork, but remember you get what you pay for more often than not.

Actually for "coders" you'll most likely have better luck in places like India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Lebanon and Eastern Europe.

* I say "coders" because its such a broad meaningless term and the OP never specified exactly what skillset he's looking for.

What skill set are you looking for? If the work is particularly interesting, you could make a post on YCombinator and see who bites. Most quality developers I know frequent that site.

Sorry I should have specified a bit. I'm just looking for someone with PHP experience to fix a few issues with a single hosted php file on our website. Real small time stuff, which is why I wanted to find someone on a freelance site instead of going through foreign countries and linkedin, creating hiring profiles etc etc etc.

Thanks, this is the type of thing I was looking for. I'll give it a look.
