I just want to add that I think Alien 3 has the best soundtrack:

Next to Jerry Goldsmith's amazing score on the 79' original -- I agree that Elliott Goldenthal's soundtrack for Alien3 was amazing. According to Goldenthal...The environment for him and the orchestral musicians was tense as the sessions were being recorded during the L.A. Riots.

Alien and Aliens are equally good and preferences between the two s just a matter of taste as far as I'm concerned.

For me, it's Aliens that wins out.

The character development for Ripley, steller ensemble cast, fantastic fleshing out of the universe and incredible variations in tone and atmosphere from oppressive, through creeeping dread and paniced horror, to edge of your seat action has never been topped in either action or horrror movies since.

I totally get people that say Alien though.

Alien>Alien: Isolation(a game but screw the rules)>Aliens>Alien3. The rest don't exist in my mind or film collection.

I've always hated what Aliens did to the xenomorph (and the franchise in the eyes of the mainstream, but I digress)
by turning them in to such cannon fodder. Part of me, because of that, always wants to like Alien3 more out of some sense of spite, but that film has way too many flaws to come close to beating it.

Of course, Aliens is a fun ass action movie and will continue to stand the test of time but I prefer the more "slasher" film approach to the franchise.

Tough call, but just for sure enjoyment purposes I'm gonna have to go with Aliens, as it has great quotable dialogue and characters (especially Hicks and Vasquez). Alien is an amazing film though, with that and Blade Runner Ridley Scott redefined the whole look and feel of Sci-fi/futuristic settings forever.

Aliens is certainly the strongest one. James Cameron and everybody on board just killed it.

But Alien 3 Assembly Cut provides a rather satisfying experience, mind you. The Theatrical Cut fails to do justice to the 3rd installment, on all accounts. But the Assembly Cut is an entirely different animal.
Although the studio never let David Fincher bring his creative vision to life - even the Assembly Cut couldn't be 100% faithful to what Fincher might have had in his mind. Thusly, Alien 3 is a film that was marred by production difficulties and tribulations, through and through.

I wonder if Cameron might get involved as producer the a potential 5th Alien.

"Alas, the buck doesn’t stop there for James Cameron with regards to his storied past. Last week, the director also teased that he might be doing the same for the Alien franchise, specifically that would-be followup to Aliens that Neill Blomkamp dreamed up years ago (and Ridley Scott promptly destroyed). If you recall, the idea would be to bring back Sigourney Weaver and Biehn, ignoring Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. "

I love Alien and Aliens. Alien is good as a suspenseful horror movie with one predatory alien creature always lurking in the shadows whittling the members of the Nostromos down slowly. Aliens is fun as a sort of action flick with horror elements.

I however did not like Alien 3 or Alien Ressurrection. It is a nerdy nitpick, but I absolutely hate how Alien 3 retcons the ending of the previous movie. It starts with an alien egg aboard Ripley's ship and it imprrgnates her while they crash on a prison planet (which they say has prisoners with YY chromosomes, which is physiologically impossible). This cannot happen logically as the Queen would have had to plant an egg on their ship before she died. When she chased Ripley in Aliens, she had to rip out her egg sac as it made her immobile. So in order for 3 to happen, the Queen had to physically hold an egg in her arms while she chased Ripley, which she didn't. She also never appeared to have entered the ship in Aliens, while she did sneak aboard she seemed to come out of the landing gear and had no way to enter the main body of it. Then we also have Ripley gestating the Alien inside of her for a MUCH longer time than the normal incubation period. Also, they say she has a Queen inside of her, but don't all xenomorphs eventually become queens if left alone? In order for Aliens to have happened according to 3's logic, the colonist would HAVE to be impregnated with a Queen.

Alien Ressurrection was just odd with the Ripley clones and Alien human hybrids.

Some of the props stored in 20th Century's warehouse for Alien ended up being reused in Blade Runner. Blade Runner deviates from the OP, but I love Blade Runner (Director's Cut is my favorite). Aliens had the potential to become a miniseries but I'm glad they decided not to make it an unending franchise by
killing everyone including the last Alien Queen baby in Alien3...Unfortunately, Hollywood went and made the 4th installment and sorta convoluted the whole thing

I've read a lot on the Assembly Cut and many claim it was on a salvaged VHS (now lost). However, that's not exactly accurate. The Assembly Cut was released on the 2003 Anniversary edition of Alien3 and again on the Anthology version blu-ray. For the record, Fincher did film two versions of Alien 3 and myriads of alternate scripts were faxed to 20th Century Fox and never even looked at. One of the earliest unseen versions has a bunch of monks in a monastery. Although, none of that was ever released -- you can still see parts of those sets in the theatrical and assembly cuts. For me I sorta liked Alien3 when I saw the theatrical, but I originally held Aliens to a higher tier. When I first saw the extended/assembly cut; that moved Aliens to third and Alien3 to #2 on my list.

About additional sequels or prequels...I like their enthusiasm, but I wouldn't support it. I feel they did the right thing by
killing off the characters and the baby Queen alien in the third. I'm a way, I felt they did it to signal to future directors: no more Alien sequels...and then they made Resurrection 🙄

I recently rewatched Alien and Aliens - I really liked the first one - moody and atmospheric. Aliens, by James Cameron - it was more entertaining, but ended up feeling a bit hollow. Used to be a big fan of James Cameron's works - but many of his works hasn't aged too well, or my taste in movies has changed it seems.

Only saw the first 3 Alien movies.... as well as Aliens vs Predator (if that counts).

Call me crazy but based on those 4 films, I'd rank them:

Aliens
AVP (stupid movie, but good fights)
Alien 3
Alien

I found the first one boring as fuck. Then again I haven't watched it in 30 years. Pretty sure I got more fun and scares watch a Friday 13th movie.

The behind the scenes story of Aliens is great. In the scene where Ripley saves Newt and rips her free from the secretion. The material they used was like a type of drying plastic. Well it was actually sharp and Weaver cut up her hands and arms during the scene.

When Ripley is grimacing pulling the gunk free it's not acting, Weaver is in actual pain that stuff off.

I saw both Alien and Aliens when I was around 10 years old so I think it's no surprise that Aliens appealed to me far more.

I absolutely loved the movie and had the action figure collection as well. Also used to read the Dark Horse comics - Newt's Tale was a great comic showing what happened to Newt before the Marines showed up.

I understand people that think Alien is the better movie but for me Aliens was way more fun and is one of my favourite action movies of all time.

I recently watch the three movies and I enjoyed 2nd the most but the 3rd satisfies me more on a spiritual and philosophical level. The final confrontation between Ripley and the Bishop creator is absolutely stunning. How he tries to persuade her, lie to her, literally anything to get the xenomorph and you can see Ripley thinking about having children and life again for a moment.

Aliens for me. Saw it before the original. Holds a special nostalgic place in my heart. I just rewatched it a few weeks ago and it still kicks ass. While we have the Alien franchise on the discussion here... Are any of the comic runs over the years good? Never really read them.

I've a question for you (Alien3 trivia). Was the Bishop at the end of the movie real or another android? Why or why not? This test will be graded.

He was obviously bleeding and in pain when he got hit so he was a human. Also, he was visibly distressed when he was talking to Ripley at the end, not at all like the ever calm and logical android. Was there any doubt?
