I never got into Star Trek, but I really liked The Orville, so I was thinking maybe I should look into it. Without getting into spoilers, what are your thoughts on each series and what would you recommend?

The Orville is a love letter to the Next Generation.

Just research the essential episodes of Season 1 and 2 to watch of The Next Generation and watch just those before shit gets amazing by series 3. If you don't do this you'll think the next generation is shit.

The Orville is garbage. Disovery and Orville are on same boat. Pathetic writing.

The Next Generation is in my opinion superior to the others in every way, and aside from the 90's TV aesthetic it has aged extremely well. Since you liked The Orville this is the one to watch. As others have cautioned though, the first season isn't so hot, the second is a little better, but the series finds its legs and really gets good in season three.

I think Enterprise gets a bad wrap. They tried to tell slightly more grounded and conventional stories with a little more action than was typical of Star Trek at the time, but it was enjoyable. It was also unique being set so early in the timeline.

Deep Space Nine got my third vote. I don't think it's spectacular or anything, but from little I've seen outside of the two previously mentioned shows above, it seemed the best.

That new stuff on the Paramount service or whatever it is all suck. They are terrible, only Star Trek in name.

Classic -> OG Trek

Acceptable -> ST:TNG, DS9

Out of ideas -> Voyager

Worthless -> Everything else.

Season 1 of Orville was good. Season 2 was just bad.

Almost every episode of the second season was about relationship drama. It's almost as if Seth McFarlane went through some heartbreak when he was writing the script for that season.
The two episodes about Isaac's home planet were just dumb and badly paced. The time traveling plot of the season finale was cringe as f*ck.

The second season of The Orville felt nothing like TNG.

TNG and DS9 at least. TNG before DS9. Both of them start off on the weak side but end up strong, though IMO TNG started to drop off again after s5 where as DS9 remained stronger overall.

I think he was dating Halston sage during part of the filming of the second season. I think that's why she left. I don't think it was a "bad" break up but maybe that's why season 2 is more emo

They were dating in Season 1. Broke up and she was removed from the show.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
The real answer to the question "Which Star Trek is most like The Orville?"

TNG is the ultimate. DS9 and Voyager had their moments but in attempting to differentiate themselves from TNG they differentiated themselves from the ultimate. Glad they're there though, if TNG had been standalone it wouldn't have been so special. So high-minded.

He did. He was plowing that hot ass security girl and had to write her off the show :p

I have to wonder if that was by her request or not. I know they gave her a really respectful goodbye episode. It's funny to think half the cast was dating each other, between that relationship and the pilot and second in command characters. The names escape me, because I haven't watched the show for a while.

Humor wasn't at all what I liked most about The Orville. But is The Lower Decks even funny or otherwise entertaining?
I've personally really enjoyed it. I think it's the only "modern" Trek I've actually liked. Like The Orville, it doesn't rely on it's humor completely - there are interesting characters and some touching moments.

But there is a lot of referential humor in the show. If you haven't seen TOS through Enterprise, you'll miss a lot of the show's gags.

As much as I like The Orville, like family guy it almost seemed to rely on other shows nostalgia to carry it through. It's simply just too lite to really be considered great for me. It lacked the depth of the other shows had developing everything slower. I'm still watching all the other Trek series decades later. That's just never gonna happen with The Orville.

Ultimately I believe Next Generation will always be GOAT. But the TOS had the best movies.

Deep Space 9 was a nice change of pace for the Trek shows. But it lacks the "catch a random episode" appeal the rest of the shows have. So I have a hard time starting starting it, knowing that I'll have to really dig in to get the most out of the show.

Man, I've been trying to watch Enterprise because some people said it was at least better than Voyager. It's grade A trash. So boring. So many unlikable characters. Where the other modern shows seem to make missteps, Enterprise seems like it had a design goal of being unwatchable.

For this poll, TOS, TNG, and DS9 no question.

Star trek TNG is basically what star trek is and orville is based on.

U want more after that, u can go for voyager which is just more of the same but with a bit weaker cast and a bit more modern looking i liked it a lot. After that if you want more, i would say watch the original series if u can stand the dated acting/looks of it and if u can't but want more watch DS9 but its kinda of a spinoff for star trek as it removes the ship traveling and focuses on religion.

Newer star treks i would just avoid entirely if u want more orville they are basically a meme at this point and nothing but action series. Cast is weak and story is meh and to much SJW crap infiltrated it which makes it hard to swallow.

It has its moments IMO. But those moments kinda require you to know the Trek catalog inside and out. We're full-on snacking on memba berries for this one.

You'd have to watch TNG at bare minimum to get anything out of Lower Decks IMO.

I would recommend DS9.

TNG is good, but it never feels as human as DS9. TNG was the peak of the Federation about the top, the flagship with the best of the best.

DS9 was always about the human side, how to hold up your principles even when faced with the worst of times. And DS9 was about friendship. While they talked about friendship on TNG there was real friendship on DS9.

For me DS9 was the best of Star Trek, because it was not always as clean as TNG and it was way more human. People had flaws and secrets, but that never stopped them from anything.

The first few seasons of Voyager were going in a smiliar direction, but then they had to bring in the Borg, Seven of Nine and professional wrestling.

Enterprise is my sleeper hit, at its best, it is just as good as any episode of DS9 and TNG.

I've been watching through Star Trek for the first time, watching every season and film in release order. Last watched DS9 S5 and Voyager S3. So far TOS and TNG stand far above the others, especially their casts. Wish DS9 was less action-oriented, wish Voyager had a better crew (but Janeway and Neelix are real cool). Both are improving as they go on. Kes just left Voyager, I expect that'll improve things, and I know Seven of Nine should be joining shortly. DS9 did a really good job with its cast, just about everyone's great, just wish there weren't as many weak episodes. Overall I'd currently rate it better than Voyager.

TOS and TNG kept things simple, maybe that made it easier for them to succeed. Their episodes were more like The Twilight Zone in space, regularly presenting some strong thought experiments and moral dilemmas, and had a nice display of the thrill of discovery. My least favorite episodes were always the two-parters, they tended to be unimaginative wargames. The TNG finale was an exception (presented on Netflix as a longer single part), that's easily one of my favorite episodes of the franchise. Could even call it one of the best Star Trek movies.
Holodeck episodes are always great too :lollipop_smiling_face_eyes:

TOS has my favorite crew. McCoy's my favorite Trek character overall, followed by Spock.
TNG's Wesley is the worst. I legiterally got to a point where I would just skip his dialogue and speed up his episodes.

I have no idea what to expect from Enterprise, except I heard the ending sucked. Then there's new Trek. I can accept serialized Trek, but my hopes aren't high.

That's a great point about orville relying on nostalgia for its humor. I really like the show;Seth having a Kermit the frog on his desk is okay with me but then Scott grimes is always mentioning 21st century references. One guy obsessed with our era is one thing but half the crew talking about pop culture like they were alive then is far fetched.

I don't get the Discovery hate. It's different sure, but I thought is was pretty decent sci-fi even if fit kinda wonkily in the timeline of star trek.
