Which game sequels make the first game almost obsolete?

Street Fighter II is the best answer I can think of.
THIS!

OP said Mega Man 2, and while universally it is considered better, there is STILL reasons to go back to the game that started it all and play it. Music and levels are still cool, and Gut's Man rules.

Literally NOT ONE reason to play the OG Street Fighter, it is not remotely good and holds 0 value and no one would care if it ceased to exist.

A lot of games people list have first entries that are still good. Mega Man 1 is still a very good game. Just because the 2nd is better doesn't make the original obsolete.

That said, Warcraft 2 for sure.

Age of Empires II
AOE1 had that great classical theme but yea I get it.

I recently played Mega Man 1 + 2 and i don't agree here. Yes 2 is better, but 1 is also a very good game and not far off.
I agree here. It wasn't like 2 gave any significant improvements to the series, as did 3 with the slide and 4 with the Mega Buster. 👥

The one outstanding thing 2 has over 1 is its magnificent soundtrack.

2 had the movements items 1-3. What i didn't like about 2 was that if you hadn't a fully loaded Crash Man weapon you couldn't beat one boss. But both are great games and you are correct, the soundtrack of 2 is outstanding.

Final Fantasy III. The first two games have a proto-Final Fantasy feel to them while Final Fantasy III feels more like the later 2D games. An NES RPG is a hard enough sell already!

On top of my head

Mgs2 except story\pace\protagonist
Crash bandicoot 2
Infamous 2 except for the story\ending
Attack on titan 2
Dead island 2
Gex 2 enter the gecko (first one was a forgettable 2d platform)
Virtua fighter 2
Sf2 turbo
Tekken 2 (although 3 was the real revolution)
Ready to rumble 2
Soul calibur (although soul edge has a special place in my heart)
Re2 (but re rebirth is almost as good)

Mario kart 8 deluxe.
It has literally all the previous tracks improved, re-balanced, at a higher speed, online and local multiplayer, modes, dual items, you name it.
Mostly true and world will make 8 obsolete in the future. There is just no way Nintendo will not milk out more money by releasing all tracks over time again.
Although I still play double dash sometimes with friends, somehow they didn't make these multiplayer battle stages anymore.

But I would also argue that most sport titles and WWE 2k games become obsolete every year. At least mostly unless they really screw up.

Fallout 3.

Not saying 1 and 2 are bad, but the switch in gameplay is why it's popular now. I know a few people who like Fallout and have zero interest in the earlier games.

Seriously guys? No one is going to mention it?

>same map, but with better exploration
>verticality sucked, so we are giving you "Ascend"
>weapon durability sucked, so we are giving you "Fuse"
>dungeons sucked, so we are giving you actual dungeons now.

It's basically BOTW remade. So much better than the original in pretty much every way, making the original feel like a tech demo.

Going from TOTK to BOTW is rough.
I am absolutely CONVINCED that TOTK is the game Nintendo originally envisioned but they knew it couldn't be ready in a reasonable time frame. It also represented a massive, unproven departure from the formula so they weren't sure if it was a good financial decision to invest over a decade on a game that might not sell well at all. So they reworked whatever they had been using in development into a completed project and pushed that out the door. That was BOTW. After it proved to be a hit, they continued experimenting with ideas and refining the technology and finally shoved out the complete, original vision: TOTK.

The amount of retconning and ignoring history and lore established in BOTW can't be explained really any other way in TOTK than Nintendo just walking away from it entirely.

I think in (most of scenarios) sandbox games usually leaves the prequel obsolete. You can argue, for example, that Halo 1 is not obsolete because it is the first part of a trilogy, however, you cant say the same in games like X, The Sims, Roller Coaster tycoon, etc.

By the way, the correct answer is Counter Strike 2 and Overwatch 2, they literally deleted the prequels.
