Which games Fanboys piss you off?

Final Fantasy VII fans are the worst of the lot. FFVII is a mediocre entry in the series that people praise because those goddamn Sony commercials hooked them in. "OMG ARE THOSE REALY TEH GRAFIX?!?!?!" Cloud, Sephiroth, et al. are NOT the greatest video game characters of all time, Aeris' death isn't the most tragic thing ever, and aside from one or two tracks, this is Uematsu's WORST FF score.

I love me my FFVII, but yeah, another really overrated game by a lot of gamers. I remember talking to one guy who said that there had never been any event so tragic in a game before Aeris' death, and I just couldn't help but bring up Terranigma.

Hell, FFIV had a moment in the game. I haven't played a whole lot so I don't know what it is though...

Final Fantasy fanboys are pretty bad, especially with FFVII. I don't particularly like Halo fanboys either.

With Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft I have the most sympathy for Nintendo fanboys since Nintendo had provided a consistant flow of exellence for longer than any other company in the gaming business. So I can actually understand their idiocy. Then Sony. They've done a good job with their first two consoles and made some fantastic games. Finally Microsoft. I don't understand these guys very well. Mostly due to the fact that the Xbox is, imo, probably the least appealing system since the Virtual Boy. Only a handfull of games worth owning. And this is all these fanboys have to go on? Eh, whatever. (Note: I'd buy an Xbox if I had the money and I'm not anti-Microsoft, the xbox is just my least favorite of the three)

Oh yeah, SEGA! I'd stick them after Nintendo. They were awesome back in the day and almost as consistant as Nintendo. Just not as innovative and a little too arcadey for my tastes. I do miss'em.

So yeah, basically all fanboys are equally moronic. It's just easier to swallow their crap if you also like whatever they're obsessed with.

I hate GameArts fanboys. Their games are fucking garbage, all right people?

I thought of one more:

Skies of Arcadia. I don't care if this game has a hidden ninjas x pirates lesbian action scene, this RPG is mediocre. There are two reasons why there are fanboys for this game: 1.- It's the best RPG on the Dreamcast. 2.- It used to be the best RPG on the GC. But you know what they say, in the kingdom of the blind the one-eyed man is king. :P

"Aeris' death isn't the most tragic thing ever"

You're right Nei's death was much more tragic.

I can't stand Gran Borismo fans. REALSIM=\FUN!!!!

GT Fan "If I can just shave my time downby .00000003452 seconds I can finally buy some tires that are teh sticky!"

Heheh, some arcade games do use that same reward method.

IAWTP.

I also agree on Resident Evil (but, the bad control scheme only adds to the game's atmosphere!), Metal Gear Solid (you need 3-hour-long cutscenes and codec conversations to tell a story that deep and interesting!), and Gran Turismo (OMG it's the most realistic ever, and therefore MUCH MORE FUN than any other racing game!).

I swear to fucking God, if I never see another post/e-mail/article on how absolutely, fan-fucking-tastic Daytona, Daytona 2, or Sega GT is and how their graphics will never, ever be surpassed, I can die happy.

Y'know what? I've re-evaluated my stance on things.

I don't hate any fanboys per se. I hate assholes. Those traits are not mutually exclusive. At least I don't think so. You can be a zealous fan of something, and that doesn't necessarily make you a complete asshole. Generally, I tend to appreciate it when someone loves something so much they border on sounding like some sort of mega ultra-nerd: part of one collective nerd brain, where all the neurones are held together by genuine love and enthusiasm for something. I like hearing people be enthusiastic. If someone doesn't want to buy something you like, or like the things you like -- that's cool. But people hating on things and whining constantly is just fucking annoying.

Which is why - CrimsonSkies and Cockles, I like. Olimario, I like. Panajev2001a seems to love the guts of consoles and what it takes to work on them more than the actual games. Thats quite unique. Gahiggidy is cool in that way too. I think I recall him being like that but about sales! DrinkyCrow is a love/hate thing... in small doses he's comic relief, but after a billion posts of basically the same constant hate thing, he can be agitating. Which is exactly the effect he wants to have on Nintendo fans imparticular I think - who really shouldn't give him the pleasure. Snapty00 just plain gets on my tits in Nintendo threads.

I'm gonna have to agree with lockii in disagreeing with Do the Mario and other posters here. If N-bots (a dismissive term for Nintendo fans) were that devoted and brand loyal, and never bought anything other than Nintendo sanctified produce -- there'd be closer to 30 million Gamecubes sold this gen than 15. I'm a huge Nintendo fan, but I also have a PS2 and an Xbox. There's no shame in the fact that the Gamecube is still my favourite system. As I see it - their hardware, controller and first/second party exclusives are still excellent. Even the third party exclusives that are so few and far between are worth it. But this isn't to say I can't see the other consoles have great exclusives too, and have many boastable features that Nintendo can't claim. The kind of asinine assumption that all Nintendo fans are as juvenile as the vociferous hive of fans on this board (for which there are PS2 and Xbox equivilents) is a tad misled in my opinion. This board really doesn't have that many bad posters imo. You should spend some time on other boards if you don't believe me.

I don't care about anything else you posted, but Gran Turismo is one of the - if not the - greatest racing series ever created bar none. This isn't even me being a fanboy. It's simply unparalleled. In the world of sim racing, nothing can beat it. And if you like sim racing, then yes... it is the most fun racing game.

That's not to speak to preference (F-Zero GX is tied as my all time favorite racer next to Gran Turismo 3), but yes it is an objectively great game.

Nintendo fanboys are the absolute worst.

They seem to be the most "ignorant" and "closed minded" gamers. Sure, they aren't fan of racing games...until Nintendo releases one. Hockey games aren't their cup of tea...until it's an N64 exclusive in the form of Wayne Gretzky's hockey. It applies to a lot of genres...this twisted way of thinking.

They kinda remind me of evangelists...like that Billy Graham bastard.
Man, you should have read through the posts to avoid a no-no.

Anyway, I definitely agree with everyone who mentioned FF7 fanboys. They're the worst and I dealt with them constantly in chat rooms, claiming its the best RPG ever or that Aeris' death was so tragic. Claiming it as the best RPG ever is subjective, but the fact that many of them have played very few RPGs or none outside of Squaresoft RPGs annoys me. Death of Aeris? Ugh... simple 2d personality i cared nothing about and don't see why anyone else would. Although, the amount of people who point out her death as being tragic makes me wonder if I missed some important thing in the game that actually fleshed her out into someone i should care about. Now, if it was Tifa dying... she was really well developed (in more ways than one =P ) and would care about.

Halo fans somewhat annoy me, but I can see why they would like it so much considering most I've talked to don't play PC FPS or just really like the multiplayer.

Damn. Well put.

Star Wars fanboys... I've never found anything remotely interesting in the movies (yes, even the old ones, but they were definitely better than the TERRIBLE recent ones), and think all 15,000,000 games based off of it are pretty worthless.

And not really much of a game thing - but I can't stand Harry Potter, and it's even worse when older people (like in their 20's) are obsessed with that shit.

And you call yourself a fan of OutRun2?

But seriously, as a former Sega diehard, the ones that still run around and still blindly love them really gets on my nerves so they're so desperate and pandering at this point. Plus it sorta hits close to home, if you get my drift.

Also, a lot of the groups who used to get one my nerves quite a bit (2D fight fans, in particular SNK fanatics, for example) have been mostly quiet since most of their stuff really didn't fare well this year, even by their delusional standards (thank KOF MI and Capcom Fighting Evloution for that).

But sorta along the same lines of radioheadrule83's train of thought, I'm just annoyed by bitter gamers who seem to bitch for the sake of bitching. I know it's pretty cliched at this point, but this is seriously the best time ever to be a gamer. If you really can't find anything exciting or positive about gaming today, you should really look for another hobby.

:rolls eyes:

I almost agree with you about the "should really look for another hobby", but I don't know why so many people think it's the "best time ever to be a gamer" or that "games today are better than ever". It's simply not a fact, but an opinion based on what kind of games a person likes.

If I posted here as much as I used to post on TNL, then people would know that I'm an extremely bitter, jaded gamer. But that's not to say that I'm blind. I believe that some genres have gotten along really well with this generation. But what if you're into shooters, or skill-based 2d platformers or 2d fighting and whatnot? Recent entries of these genres are not that great. Many of these genres, even if games are still being made, are figuratively dead.

Ummmm.... let's see.

In the shooter category, we have Gradius V, R Type Final (which might have come out in Japan last year I think, but it came out here in the US, so I'll count it as such) and numerous Japanese shooters (and maybe a Korean title or two). Plus there's Alien Hominid if you want to count that, so I think it's been a pretty damn good year for shooters, the best in a long while actually.

Skill based 2D Platformers... well we have Mega Man Zero 3, which I personally didn't like, but I know most Mega Man fan love it. As well as Kirby (okay, maybe that's not skill based). As for 2D fighting, other than Guilty Gear and SVC, I can't think of much else, so you do have me there. But for other "niche" oriented genres, like arcade racers, we have OutRun 2 and Burnout 3, and for totally wacky Japanese fare we have Katamari Damacy and Technic Beat...

Sorry, but I still have to stand by my statement that it's the best time ever to be a gamer. There is basically something for everybody.

The problem with jaded gamers is that most are not willing to try something new. Not saying you're in the club, but most should expand their horizons and approach the different genres with an open mind and not automatically shun something just because it's not 2D or the like.

Not only that, but those old games did not evaporate into a pile of dust. You can still play them!

Next year will be "the Best time ever to be a gamer" compared to this one because we can play every game that's come out AND the '05 releases.

Yes yes, I'm not saying that they don't exist, just that often times they're different (or just plain worse). Let's take your shooter example:

I personally bought Border Down, Shikigami no Shiro 2 and Psyvariar 2 for the DC this year. All three are nice games, particularly Border Down, which really is one of the better/best shooters I've played. But for the most part, shooters today play differently than say Thunderforce III. The Shikigami no Shiro and Psyvariar series and Radiant Silvergun have brought shooters in a different direction with the "buzz" concept, trying to fly your ship to graze bullets and items instead of outright dodging. Some like the direction, others don't.

The problem with jaded gamers is that most are not willing to try something new. Not saying you're in the club, but most should expand their horizons and approach the different genres with an open mind and not automatically shun something just because it's not 2D or the like.

Completely agreed with your statement. There are a bunch of jaded "gamers" who are just as closed minded as the mainstream they hate against.

Haha, well if you put it like that, then no one could argue :P

there is certainly somethign for everyone but it is by no means the best time to be a gamer for everybody.

I love RPG's but I think the RPG's of this gen have sucked pretty hard. Sure there have been a lot of them, but nothing as good as what appeared in the snes and psx days.

2D platforming is also dead. Megaman zero games kinda work but they don't really have the same feel as the old mario games or sonic. I doubt much in platforming in today's games could even begin to compare to playing sonic3+sonic&knuckles co-op.

PC Adventures have also been dead for a long time. When was the last time a monkey island was released? Whatever happened to Legend which used to make cool adventure games based off of books like Companions of Xanth or Death Gate?

There also haven't been any good (that I know of) 2D action/adventure games/rpg whatever you want to label them. Old Stuff like Illusion of Gaia or Secret of Mana/Evermore.

Theres been no Ogre Battle for this generation :(

arguable but not entirely true. While I would hope one could enjoy the best of the best from from years long past and thus get a lot of enjoyment out of the nes/snes/genesis etc, I doubt many would be able to tolerate something even if it is good.

ie. if a game was so incredibly awesome for its time but compared to todays games isn't all that impressive, a gamer starting nowadays would probably throw it away whereas we who where gaming when it was released got hours upon hours of enjoyment out of it.

Take soemthing like Street Fighter 2. I played that game a stupid amount of time and it was awesome. A new gamer beginning with todays generation wouldn't be able to get any enjoyment out of street fighter 2. Therefore, While they got to enjoy todays games I got to enjoy both the old games and the new and thus my amount of awesomeness experienced (and able to experience) is greater because I was a gamer way back when.

Graphics Whore! j/k

I agree that you have a point about mechanics and stuff being updated, and old games being less awesome when we play them when compared to newer games (e.g. the interface in Dune for PC might be unbearable now, whereas it felt super-intuitive back then), but if the interfaces in todays games are improved, then we are probably better off now than we were then, aren't we?

If the gameplay on old games pales in comparison, we probably are being jaded by nostalgia if we still hold them above newer games.

I loved the original SFII way back when too, but now I'd prefer to play SFA3 over any other entry in the series (or maybe MVC2 if I am feeling spazzy). I think SFA3 is a better game than SFII, but that doesn't mean that SFII wasn't a good game for its time.

So, yeah, people who, for example, say 1998 was the best year for gaming kinda have a point. They claim Half-Life was more innovative than part 2, and I agree, but at the same time, we aren't all playing Half-Life Source, are we?... (Not that we can't if we wanted to, which is my original point).

... and I guess what you are really saying is that games like Mortal Kombat II are useless now to the same people that it would have been GOTY for a few years back. I kinda understand that, but at the same time, I think by and large games evolve so that when a game is made obselete, there is usually an improved replacement that makes it obselete.

I think anyone today could have as much fun with, say Mario Picross or Ms. Pac Man, as they did back when those games were new.

the general point is that... the 'rate of awesomeness' was higher previously than it is now.

as in, I was experiencing awesome at a faster rate in the snes days than I am now, and that same rate could not be achieved by someone in this day and age because those games were only capable of that rate in the past.

like if one were to make a graph of total lifelong awesomeness experienced over time, the level would be higher now than it was in the snes days, but the slope of the line would be higher in the snes days ^_^
