I think it's unavoidable. I joined this forum when I was, what, thirteen? I believe so. For me, can't speak for everyone, NeoGAF was cool. The people that posted here were funny, interesting, and popular. It's just nostalgia, I guess. I mean, I recognize now that those people I read about are just regular people, but it's fun to look back on.

sheeeit, I just realized I'm around four months or so from having been here for a decade. And I'm not even truly in GAF's old school.

I just don't get why Opiate axed the bait material for the contest but people still going around posting the same things in other threads. Just seemed odd when half the fun of The Contest was baiting others and having them post "im out.gif" immediately after.

I think I love NeoGAF so much because it serves as a record of my existence. I don't keep a journal, I don't remember much about my adolescence, but NeoGAF has my posting history for all of my teenage years.

I can see how I acted, what I thought was funny, etc. It's kind of cool.

Like I said above, I can't help but click the little bars most of the time.

But nearly every time I do, I'm like "oh, yeah, that's why I have him on ignore".

Heh, same here. I don't use the ignore list often, but I spend way too much time on the gaming side and there are certain posters that offer nothing aside from acting as volunteer shills for their manufacturer of choice. It tends to get way under my skin so I put them on ignore to avoid lashing out on them and getting myself in trouble.

People get away with linking to real hard porn in other threads?! I need to get into these subcommunities.

How can he prove his threadmaking capabilities without the ability to make threads
Well showing that s/he is able to make good, concise posts to further discussion would be a start (not that I'm saying s/he isn't btw)

Speaking of Gaborn and ignoring people...if you ignore someone and they make a thread, can you see the thread? Is it visible, but the OP is just a line?

I appreciate the sentiment.

In retrospect I was really immature at times, anyway, with how I ran things; how I would sometimes publicly lynch people or get into melodramatic feuds with people, be unable to handle criticism well, and how I could get spiteful with people on my bad side or assume the worst in people. Keep in mind that I was a kid or not very far removed from being one for a lot of that history.

Well you were pretty young when you took over GAF. The fact that you could be immature and yet the forum is still alive and kicking says something.

GAF should open the floodgates for one day, and there should just a be a re-union thread of some kind. I want to see bjork, Crushed, segata, demi, drinky crow, Vennt, everyone in a happy thread.

who was that dude that was crazy about ridge racer?
is drinky crow really gone?

EDIT: I have been around long enough to know about his "ban" Tag, I mean gone as in left the board etc

I do enjoy these GAF history threads, even though for half the stuff being posted in here its still interesting.

While the thread is on the subject of old mods, whatever happened to the following mods:
BuddyC
sonycowboy
jinx
jim
?

those guys were all mods back when i first registered here but all seem to have disappeared. I'm guessing since no one mentioned them yet there probably isn't much of a story behind them and they just left of their own accord?

BuddyC -- removed due to long-term inactivity
sonycowboy -- removed due to long-term inactivity
jinx -- retired amiably due to personal reasons
jim -- removed due to long-term inactivity
wellington -- retired amiably due to personal reasons
wasabiking -- retired amiably due to personal reasons

Any info on why Anihawk was de-modded, did he step down himself or what? (I guess I could send him a pm, but with the thread being so open...)
IIRC Amihawk was never a mod. People always get him confused with Anir0x for some reason though...

I only put one person on ignore list and that too because the person was being incredibly hostile and talking stuff about me when I wasn't posting. Removed him too.

It's fun when you don't really remember the specifics to have your memory jogged. Like, I vaguely remember the antics of MrAngryFace, but I also remember when he was Ryan Thompson (that was his name, right, I'm going from memory?) -- writer for the Gaming Age site. I really only vaguely remember that transition to him trolling non-stop, and I don't even remember why. I'm 27 years old, and I feel like an old man thinking back on this crap. I first discovered these forums when I was... fifteen years old, I think. Jesus.

No, definitely not. You've been a junior member for far too long. Sure, mistakes have consequences, but we all need the opportunity to learn from them. You'll be okay, kid.

I already learned my lesson. I made a series of bad threads. I'm sorry about that.

I just want to know a date when this punishment will be lifted or atleast the name of the mod that juniored me.

I know that they're reading this and probubly laughing at me right now, but honestly I don't care.

I just really hate the ambiguity around here sometimes.

He was probably keeping an eye on the Contest thread, because there was a good chance that sort of stuff would pop up there.

He competed in spirit but eliminated himself immediately is my guess. Killed it for everyone else 'cause he was mad jelly of their holdout skillz.

He could've just banned those people and he did, ChiTownBuffalo.

Salva had asked another mod if it was cool and the mod said it was then opiate said no it wasn't. That's as far as I know.

Wow, I never thought I'd say this but: Respeck knuckles.

This thread (as well as the links within it) has been endlessly fascinating. Much appreciation to some of the Big Shots of GAF for participating and pulling back the curtain a bit.

When you broke off into neogaf, it was you and wasabi who were the big bosses, right? were a lot of early neogaf mods mods at the ga-forum, or did you start all fresh?(Insert neo pun here...). Like, was bish, hito and dragona selected as a new mod team?

The Evil forum is having a ball with this thread so far. ha. With all the open talk I figured they would be eating it up.

It was, at first. But now all the excitement has shifted to the return of cloud, jarosh, and third. Also there was some talk of getting to see nudity.

Thanks for the other side of the story, but something still doesn't add up; perming users for questioning her doesn't seem to be Red's MO, I heard something about digging up personal information on her?

I don't know about that, if that happened it wasn't posted in the thread(or if it was it was removed before I saw it), perhaps on the forum that was set up after the bannings/ account suicides/ people left. She just seemed upset that people thought it was kinda foolish to claim you were going to read 70-odd thousand posts(going back over a year) & retroactively ban people rather than wait for a new season & start from there & vindictively permabanned the most outspoken people( I can't remember exactly what was said on the banning message, but it was pretty pathetic).

I guess this is a pet peeve of mine, but I dislike online communities becoming incredibly focused on their past lore. Really dislike it when ex-posters or posters are elevated to mythological levels. Pretty sure it's inevitable on any forum out there because some posters are pretty crazy or some weird shenanigans do happen eventually. In any case, the behind the scenes stuff is intriguing. Rename thread to NeoGAF: Full Disclosure

The thing is, there are hundreds of thousands of message boards on the internet. The only thing distinguishing them is the member list. It stands to reason that people who have been on a board for a few years or more are going to be interested in things involving other members and moderators of the board, because they're the reason we post on GAF instead of that bizarro Afrikaner GAF.

There's a bizzaro Afrikaner GAF?

BuddyC was one of my all-time favorite mods. Dude is a real classy character. A great all-around guy. I think he just got busy with life and eventually he was so inactive he was demodded. That's what I recall.

As i suspected, there wasn't much of a story to tell there. thanks for the info though. I'm kinda suprised those who were removed due to inactivity don't just ask to be removed, its hard to imagine them being so busy that they forget they're forum moderators.

Not really. Why bother ignoring sexist shit or getting into a stupid argument when a mod can take care of it. That's what they're there for.

Yes, thats what THEY are there for, not what you are here for. There is a reason tattle tales are scolded as children.
