I'm not the type that subscribes to the "OMG! 4D chess!!" approach to Trump's decision making but I really do think this is a ruse and they're feigning being 'furious' about this. To what ends, I don't know. Probably to distract from the expected concerns about what was being discussed in the meeting itself, which I haven't heard many people upset about so if that was the purpose then it worked brilliantly.
Maybe Trump knows he can do whatever he wants so long as he leaves some egg on his face because that's what his critics will immediately focus on.
