Sony did actually say that they believe the PSP wasn't selling as well as expected in Japan was because people didn't know it was a playstation.

I'm more inclined to believe this is for global market purposes given that PSP is already trademarked in Europe.

Actually, there was some lawsuit or somesuch over the PSP name, so to appease whoever owns it they use "Playstation Portable" as the name, and PSP as the abbreviation. This is why the startup logo in 2.0 says "Playstation Portable" below PSP.
