Didn't get one at launch. Bought a Cube first, and to be honest given the few hours I play games per week (thanks to work) I probably could have left it at that. I think pound for pound it's the most value for money. Especially in the UK where second hand systems and games for it are VERY cheap. I'm certainly no casual gamer. I wouldn't say so anyway... Sure, I throw systems on every now and then and that might be called casual. But my buying trends are anything but. I take buying games quite seriously. I want the games I play to be good, and I get pissed off if I buy something I feel wasn't worth the price. I would buy a shitload more games if they were at a more mass market price. As it is DVDs and other things steal my gaming money away.
Anyway, I digress. With Gamecube, I'd say it has as many must-own titles as the other systems. Easily. I can see how people who weren't around for SNES/Gen, or simply prefer more western games (or certain genres where cube is lacking) can't get into it, but I really do think it's a fucking awesome machine.
In the past year I seem to have turned into a gadget fetishist. Between various music players, PC upgrades, setting up a network at home, getting a sound system, convincing the family to share paying off a plasma TV... I still wasn't satisfied. With absolutely no hype for the machine or it's games at all I went and bought an Xbox. I got it modded, and fell in love from the first FTP sesh. I had a mod with a switch so I got some Xbox live love too before I slipped up and got banned. Xbox convinced me to be onboard for the 360 love in. Something I didn't expect at all.
I started living in a flat with friends a couple of years back, and one of them had a PS2. So I got to play MGS2, GT3 A spec, FFX, GTA3 etc without ever actually buying one. Having been back home for quite some time now, I did miss it a little, but the cube and Xbox were enough. Then my brother did the right thing and made us a three console family. Super hot slim line PS2 now resides where it belongs, next to the others. And thank fuck we got it! MGS3 is my favourite game this generation!
