Who doesn't own or has never owned a PS2? (i.e. Do you hate modern gaming?)

If not, why? I think I'm in the minority here, but I don't have a PS2. Started the generation with the Cube, was given the Xbox by a friend, and I don't have the money for a third system.

Anyone else not own a PS2 at any time during this generation?

Have I owned a PS2? Yes.

Do I currently own a PS2? No...I'm not about to buy a third console after the first two break down.

Not only do I not own a PS2 - I didn't even own a PS1. I was/am a Sega man all the way till XBOX came out..

Then I actually went and bought my first Sony video game product (PSP)...

Didn't you already make this exact same thread some moneths ago? Or perhaps it was someone else.

I don't think so. I did a survey about gaming preferences and 33% of the forum listed the PS2 as their primary gaming system, with 31% Gamecube, and 23% Xbox. But that was over a year ago.

I'm in the same boat as GamerzXtreme in that I have never owned a PSX (or PS1 if you prefer) or a PS2. I've owned/was given as a gift an SNES and have continued with Nintendo since then with the ol' B&W GB, then N64, then GC, and both the horizontal (old school if you will) and SP versions of the GBA. Before SNES I had a C64, but never owned/played a NES. So that's about it :) However, I will likely venture into the multi home console realm next generation, with a Nintendo console and probably a PS3 (though it is conceivable that I might just get a PS2 if it gets another price cut by this fall) :)

Halfway. My dad bought a PS2 within its first year, but soon realized he wouldn't have much use for it so basically left it to my brother and I. I guess I don't feel it's really mine, though, as other than demos I only actually have one game (Eye Toy: Play) and that was a Christmas present. Have borrowed and played a ton of FFX and GTA3, though.

As for why... I'm a Nintendo whore and most of my money goes that direction. Really the big things that got me to eventually purchase a PS1 in 1998 were the PaRappa and Final Fantasy games, neither series of which is nearly as major a presence on PS2 as PS1, nor is the type/scope of game so unprecedented or impossible to find alternatives for on other systems.

Im not sure what good can come out of a thread like this.

But anyway, Ive never owned a PS2. I have an xbox and gc but I hardly play those either. Honestly I think I play my DC more than anything. :/

Would you have bought an Xbox if it hadn't been given to you, Speevy?

That would be a more interesting thread to do again.

I don't own a PS2, and never have... yet. Still, I've got about 8 PS2 games, and I'll probably hold out until it drops to $99 (although a drop to $129 would sure tempt me).

Didn't get one at launch. Bought a Cube first, and to be honest given the few hours I play games per week (thanks to work) I probably could have left it at that. I think pound for pound it's the most value for money. Especially in the UK where second hand systems and games for it are VERY cheap. I'm certainly no casual gamer. I wouldn't say so anyway... Sure, I throw systems on every now and then and that might be called casual. But my buying trends are anything but. I take buying games quite seriously. I want the games I play to be good, and I get pissed off if I buy something I feel wasn't worth the price. I would buy a shitload more games if they were at a more mass market price. As it is DVDs and other things steal my gaming money away.

Anyway, I digress. With Gamecube, I'd say it has as many must-own titles as the other systems. Easily. I can see how people who weren't around for SNES/Gen, or simply prefer more western games (or certain genres where cube is lacking) can't get into it, but I really do think it's a fucking awesome machine.

In the past year I seem to have turned into a gadget fetishist. Between various music players, PC upgrades, setting up a network at home, getting a sound system, convincing the family to share paying off a plasma TV... I still wasn't satisfied. With absolutely no hype for the machine or it's games at all I went and bought an Xbox. I got it modded, and fell in love from the first FTP sesh. I had a mod with a switch so I got some Xbox live love too before I slipped up and got banned. Xbox convinced me to be onboard for the 360 love in. Something I didn't expect at all.

I started living in a flat with friends a couple of years back, and one of them had a PS2. So I got to play MGS2, GT3 A spec, FFX, GTA3 etc without ever actually buying one. Having been back home for quite some time now, I did miss it a little, but the cube and Xbox were enough. Then my brother did the right thing and made us a three console family. Super hot slim line PS2 now resides where it belongs, next to the others. And thank fuck we got it! MGS3 is my favourite game this generation!

Tough to say. I've been a member of that other forum for so long that I might have been convinced to purchase it. But I had no plans to purchase one on my own at the time it was given to me.

At least, not yet! Or maybe, never will... ahh well. uughh never mind!

Listed below, I don't own 'em.

Sony:

Playstation
Playstation 2

Microsoft:

X-Box

I never owned a PS2, or even a PS1 for that matter. Not on purpose, I don't have anything against Sony. It's just that this gen I started with a Gamecube, then got an Xbox. I see no reason to own a third system. Right now I'm leaning to PS3 for next gen, depending on Sony's online strategy, so we'll see if the streak ends.

I just bought one a few weeks ago. My god, I was missing so many great games. . .

Better late than never, though. Now I can catch all those great games for $10 :)

I could've sworn I saw a topic just like this awhile ago.

Anyway, I have all three systems, but I have the least amount of games for PS2 and gets the least playtime.

You know, I have honestly played more PSOne games on my PS2 than PS2 games. But that's probably because I have an RPG backlog I want to catch up on.

I have a friend who only owns a Cube and Xbox, and he's been really happy. He buys new games all the time too, mostly for the Xbox. His reasons for not having a PS2 are the load times (go figure), inferior versions of third-party games, and that he gets all the FPS, Star Wars, and racing games he wants on the Xbox. Just goes to show, you really can an avid gamer and be happy without a PS2.

*He doesn't play RPG's tho.

The thread title makes it worthless as a survey. It's a leading question that won't get valid results.

Yeah, perhaps survey was the wrong word. Just a question. "Do you own a PS2" is not a thread I wanted to wade through.

I have owned one. Do not currently have it. I never played it and when I moved for my job, my girlfriend asked if she could have it to watch dvds on. Said why the hell not. And honestly, I have not missed it. The only game that has come out in the last year that I want to try is that God of War game.

Then what exactly is the point again? Initially you said "to test the hypothesis that most GAFers have had a PS2", but it's seems like you're fishing for something else.

Not that that's a problem, but you could be a little more up front about what you're getting at.

Having owned and loved my DC, I just didn't understand how I was supposed to pay MORE for a machine that had fewer controller ports, no modem, and no Samba de Amigo.

Sure. I think most people on this forum own a PS2. A very, very large majority. The BUY A PS2 campaign seems out of place.

own it, dont play it. same goes for the xbox. dont have a tv. :lol
but i wont play them anytime soon either, im in love with my psp, and psp IS IT for now, till xenon.

what's that? Seriously, i haven't heard about it.

You're joking, yes? Drinky Crow (and a few other users) have only posted that a million times. It's just silly, IMO. Most people here own a PS2. Those that don't are a very clear minority.

i was given a ps2. the prior owner went to jail for shaking a baby to death. the babys mom gave it to me.

anyways, it was pretty broke until i swabbed the lens with windex. worst thing to do everm but it works perfectly now.

I finally bought one about two months ago. The slim line model was too damn sexy to pass up. Also, I had a shitload of store credit I needed to spend, so that helped me take the plunge.

BUY A PS2, or shut up whenever a game (SURPRISE) doesn't come to one of those other consoles with significantly less marketshare.

Did I mention that you oughtta BUY A PS2? Dynasty Warriors 5 rocks!

I don't own one for money reasons as well as time constraints. There were a few times when I was pretty close to getting a PS2 or an Xbox but then I re-evaluated my situation and decided to hold off.

Both this comment and Dynasty Warriors 5 seem to run counter to your editing of my thread title. I mean, wouldn't "modern" games include Doom 3 and Half-Life 2?

*dives behind a wall*

I own one. I dunno why though really. I'm not a big fan of rpgs and Xbox is just as good if not better as far as every other genre is concerned (except platformers but I use my Cube for that). Every once in a while it gets some awesome exclusive that I want (like, once every 2 years) but overall its a pretty overrated system IMO.

pretty much why I find the PS2 + PC combo to be quite satisfying

That's a great combination. However, I've never been able to enjoy PC gaming, nor can I afford it. No offense to PC gamers. I just prefer consoles.
