Who else agrees that Rise of the Ronin was the most underrated AAA game this year?

I finally finished this amazing game today and I can confidently say this is the best Team Ninja game since Ninja Gaiden Black, fantastic open world Exploration, easy to learn but hard to master Combat, fun co-op Multiplayer and a surprisingly good Story with one of the best features I've ever seen in any RPG, letting you rewind time to see the multiple outcomes and twists of your narrative choices.

Unfortunately I also think this is one of those games you either played and loved or you completely forgot it even existed with Sony being stupid enough to release it the same day as Dragon's Dogma 2 even I forgot about it until recently and with mixed reviews and a BS 76 on Metacritic this game is pretty much doomed to not even enter the RPG GOTY discussion this year, while other games that don't deserve the recognition probably will (Failguard)

But anyway I just wanted to shout out this game with this appreciation thread cause it totally deserves it, who else agrees?

Yes. But the problem with the game is technical issues. Hopefully they send more updates to fix it especially frame rate. Ps5 pro might able to help, but I'm not sure if there is already a patch for ps5 pro.

Bought it right after release and got the plat. The score is accurate. 76 is a good score.

The game is full of Ubisoft style busy work and collect a thon stuff. The gameplay is good, combat good. The problems are it’s repetitive, it goes on too long, and there are way too many characters.

Havnt played this one but really enjoyed there previous game last year. I’ll probably pick it up when it gets cheaper.

Its a good game! I enjoyed it more than Wo Long, but not more than Nioh. Overall, spent about 45 hours obtaining the platinum, and it was all worth it. Would purchase a sequel and/or another type of similar game from TN.

Sony being stupid enough to release it the same day as Dragon's Dogma 2
It was announced like a week after DD2's date reveal, so Sony making a last-minute delay just because of that wouldn't have been a very good idea.
Especially since DD2 wasn't exactly the big blow-up moment for the series fans wanted it to be.

I was actually underwhelmed :(

Went in with super high expectations, so that hurt it a bit for me. Was looking for something more in depth like Nioh, but wasnt there.

I've been on the fence about this one since launch due to the mixed reviews. Might finally pull the trigger now that it's getting cheaper.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
A lot of people complain about the performance but I didn’t have any issues in my play through.

It was like BG3, the later acts had more issues compared to the opening parts.

In the Kyoto region, the game had a lot of notable frame drops. Not sure if they've fixed it now, but the game's VRR was also broken in the launch month so there was no fallback.

Was sort of interest in it but the technical issues kept me away. I'll maybe play it some day in the future on hardware that can just brute force better performance out of the awful optimization.
Team Ninja really needs to get their shit together in regards to their tech and engine. A game that looks like this shouldn't be running at less than 1080p and with framerate drops into the mid 40's

FWIW it’s highlighted on PSN right now as a PS5 Pro title: I wonder how much better it performs? If I didn’t have DD2 on deck I’d probably get it but it’s possible I might never play it at all if I don’t get through Horizon 2 and GOW Ragnarok before Ghosts of wtf its called instead of Tsushima 2 comes out.

See I dont think releasing at the same time as DD2 was the problem. Both games got kinda average reception.
But yes it is underrated, but the most Underrated is Stellar Blade by far, for one it has tight, well executed gameplay, some great boss fights, and actually decent amount of exploration.
Plus it looks beautiful, runs very well, and of course Eve <3. Cant wait for the dlc.

After patches, the game is a very good shape now. Team Ninja makes the best katana combat in the world, it's just most people were able to dive in and took the full enjoyment.

It was ok. The parry timings were infuriating until you knew exactly what they were going to hit you with, like a random double slash out of nowhere you would never be able to parry if you didn't know it was coming.

I dropped it. It had some decent boss fights, but the open world felt boring. I also didn’t do all the side stuff, so my weapons sucked at later bosses. I’d rather play NiOh 2. I felt like NiOh 2 was a lot more rewarding with progression and loot. In RotR I didn’t like going back to town and the story wasn’t interesting to me.

I look at this game with higher praise then it probably deserves and that was because I was so enjoying Shogun and felt like playing something similar. I had already finished Ghosts, so I enjoyed Ronin.
Looking back, reviews seem pretty fair, worth playing and a lot of enjoyment there. I felt the same about Outlaws, enjoyed it more than it deserved due to Star Wars license.

I enjoyed it but it became quite repetitive in the final hours and the story was super dull. Didn't help either to have a silent protagonist

But the gameplay is great

Loved the world and gameplay, the environments were great but the cities a bit empty maybe. Also maybe a bit too many characters which made the story lose some of its focus.

Probably my GOTY at this point. Very cool vibes, fun to explore and of course the combat is aces.

Great game held back by poor graphics and performance, no doubt scared a lot of people away. Either their engine is terrible or they’re just bad at optimisation.

Absolutely loved it. Incredibly fun game to play that I couldn’t get enough of. Open world “narrative” games burn me out quickly but this is just one of those exceptions due to the combat and the historical background of the whole set up. I do think having a crush on half of the cast helped as well.

I enjoyed it for being a soulslite which meant I could finish it without getting stuck and frustrated on a boss. The setting was really good and exploring the maps was fun. Unfortunately the performance on PS5 was shit and the game was throwing too many names and codex entries about the historical events to be able to enjoy following the main story. At the end of the day it's a 7/10 game for me, not going to remember it years later like Tsushima.

It was ok.

The loot system was appalling though. And there was a lot of jank. Example of a game that really would have benefitted from more time and money.

Absolutely underrated, it’s a great game. Not quite 9/10 top game of the year stuff, but a damn good time nonetheless.

Although it's not perfect, I love it.

The technical issues and some design decisions kinda hold it back.

It's a typical Team Ninja game and I love their games, but I honestly expected a little more of it, specially on The Way of the Samurai inspired parts (dialogue decisions).

Hopefully they will make a sequel and I am sure they will improve everything.

Game was mediocre. Combat wasn't as good as nioh or wo long. Forgettable story. Graphics looks basic and outdated with pop-ins, and still has frame rate issues on top of that.

Going from Wo Long to Ronin was pretty jarring combat-wise. Wo Long, and even more so the Nioh games have much tighter combat and a better lock-on camera. I still need to play it in its entirety, but my initial impressions on the combat weren't great.

Anyone know how the co-op works? I've played the entirety of Nioh 1,2 and Wo Long with friends and was bummed to find out that Ronin isn't entirely co-op like the previous games.

Ronin and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden are the dark horses of the year. One is a Ghost of Tsushima / Ass Creed rip off the other is a Wicher / God of war knock off. Both are better than expected.

I was really looking forward to this. After the huge disappointment of Wo Long, I decided to completely skip Ronin. I think they peaked with Nioh and we will never see that quality again.

I have it in my collection, I've completed it.

Unfortunately, it's a very mediocre game. The story is weak and uninteresting, and oh my god how it drags on... The combat system is good (But when was it bad in games from this studio), the game world, although large, is uninteresting and is made according to the traditions of games from Ubisoft. Well, visually, this game looks good only on gifs, when you play it yourself, sometimes in places you get a clear feeling that it was ported from PS3.
