Rise of the Ronin Is Yet Another Disappointing PC Port from KOEI TECMO

Are Japanese developers aware that PC's are capable of delivering a superior version of their product? Its the same every time, shit ports. I assume PC gaming is a niche over there?

PC master race continues to be treated as second class citizens for console releases, esepcially by Japanese developers. Obviously PC gamers don't buy enough games.
considering that the game runs and looks like crap on the consoles :
if pc players are second class citizens but can at least bruteforce and fix via mods, then console players would be something like hostages because they can`t help themselves and are just stuck with whatever the developer vomits on their plate.

Japanese developer incompetence at its finest such as the below...

"Not only that, but you cannot use DLSS 3 Frame Generation in Fullscreen Mode. Instead, you'll have to use Window or Borderless. I raised this issue to Team Ninja and its response was "The unavailability of frame generation in non-borderless fullscreen mode is a specification". That's the first time I've heard anything like that. But hey, it is what it is"

A 5090 with no RT @ 4K getting 72FPS is insane. This game was heavily criticised for how "last-gen" is looked as well on launch last year.

That dso article doesn't make it sound terrible outside of being stupid demanding at Ultra settings. No shader or traversal stutters at least.

This fucking sucks. The PS5 version runs like shit so I was hoping for a big performance increase on PC.

This is a PS5 exclusive too, mind you. The textures are shit, the geometry is flat. There's zero reason for this thing to run like shit AND be 150 gigs in size. Either their engine or their optimization team are absolute garbage.

Shitty port or not, it still runs and looks better than the PS5 version, so if the PC is second class citizens what does that make the console players?

That's what i read almost every time. If you have a 2k 3k or 4k pc you can brute force and will run ok.
Apparently you shouldn't expect much more powerful and expensive hardware to run games much better than consoles. That would be unreasonable.

Just like you shouldn't expect a switch game to look much better when ported to ps5.

I mean...they did put out Nioh 2 if anyone remembers that amazing port.

Everything they put out is a wait and see for me until they improve their track record.

It is funny that the Ninja Gaiden 2 remake on UE5 runs better than this game though. Why bother with an in-house engine if you can't control for good performance?
Nioh 2 looked like a PS3 game though.

After reading the article it seems like performance is shit on Ultra settings as they are just completely unoptimised. It's obviously not a good look when trying to run the game on the highest end hardware and it runs badly.

That being said, if you run the game on standard settings it sounds like it's better optimised and runs well enough on what they have under the recommended requirements.

It would be fine if it ran poorly on Ultra but looked amazing. But it looks meh at best.

Guys, the game runs at 1070p-1100p on average in Performance Mode on the Pro without ray tracing. It's 936p on the regular PS5.

Here, they're running 4K native+DLAA and max settings with RT.

This guy on a 7800 XT runs it at 1440p High settings and is able to remain above 60fps. Otherwise, he has to use DLSS Quality at Ultra settings because his frame rate dips to the 40s in intense moments.

I'm not sure of the graphical preset on the Pro, but the Quality Mode is 1440p and runs at ~40fps.

The game scales just fine on PC compared to the PS5 version. It's just an ugly game that doesn't have the graphics the hardware commend. PC wasn't going to optimize it better.

Question for PC gamers:

Were there any major console titles from last gen that couldn't be brute-forced to a satisfactory level performance on mid to decent PC rig?
And obviously I mean during the lifetime of the PS4/Xbone gen, because I'm curious to know if you guys have noticed a generational change.

Other than games with bad shader stutter or games with extensive added RT, I can't think of any that don't run satisfactory 'for me' on my 6900XT.
There is a difference between "this game should run better on this PC given how it looks" and "this game should run better on this PC when compared to how it runs on lower powered consoles"
PC's are generally in the same ballpark as consoles like for like - but a lot of the games are looking really underwhelming overall on consoles as well.

The base PS5 version also ran like shit in later areas when I played it during the launch window. I can't say if that's been fixed via patching since then, but the launch experience was far from stable in Performance mode.

But that artcile is at least more nuanced. Ultra settings seem to push some settings too much, tanking performance. Reminds me of old games that had ridiculous shadow quality and draw distance settings that tanked performance by 50%.

Here going from Ultra to High gets you a 25% performance increase in the 1% lows, Standard settings (I presume it's PS5 settings) give you a 50% boost. Game should run fine at 1440p with high settings on most mid-range PCs. Much better than the PS5 version.

Disappointing. Was hoping for a (somewhat) polished experience. Probably getting it for PS5 instead unless the devs patch it up real good.

Don't call the PC a trash can bruh. It really isn't. It's actually a dump. Call it the giant console port dump.

Hey, we all just take what we can get.

How's the game running on the Pro? Oh ~1080p upscaled to 4K with the oldest version of PSSR so it's an unstable mess? It also drops to the low 40s?

Amazing.

I can't honestly think of any.
But that remains true even in the current era.

Bottom line: PS5 Pro Performance Mode is the best way to experience this gem.
Having played and finished the game on the Pro performance mode. That is not simply not true. It looks shit, and frame drops were often. I only finished it because the game itself is good.

I mean it's team ninja. The games looking like they are from 1-2 gens ago but somehow running like shit has been like one of their trademarks this gen.

Arkham Knight maxed out before they fixed it. The smoke physics broke it.

1070-1100p and dropping below 60 vs native 4K+DLAA 80-100fps and High settings.

Yeah, I don't think so. Mind you, the Pro should be running this at like 1800p60, but the optimization is ass.

It's puzzling why they did not do any comparisons with plain old DLSS.

DLAA buttered up with fake frame nonsense is no substitute for the real performance gains of DLSS.

Idk, I'm fine with the Performance Pro mode. Could be better, as I've stated in the Pro thread, but still great imo.

EDIT: and I still firmly stand by my statement that PS5 Pro is the best place to play it.

Rise of the Ronin unironically looks like a PS3 game and nothing will change my mind about that. The fact that it performs like one too is kinda funny.
