Who is your favorite visionary/studio figurehead? Some of these on the list haven't had a "director" title specifically (some studios/games just don't do that) but are generally are the figureheads of their studio(s) and are the driving force behind the game's vision and design. Note, just asking for your personal favorite - not necessarily "best", most influential, or anything like that.

EDIT: Last option voters, name names!

EDIT 2: Almost 100 votes in, I'm shocked at the lack of votes for Nomura and the western directors.

Hidetaka Miyazaki

For me

Yoko Taro (Nier/Drakengard)
George Kamitani (Vanillaware)
Tetsuya Takahashi (Xeno series)
Fumito Ueda (Team ICO)
Hidetaka Miyazaki (Souls series)
Masaru Yamamura (Director for ACVI and designer for Sekiro)
Miyamoto (Nintendo)
Shu Takumi (Ace Attorney series)

Neil Druckmann

Cory Barlog hasn't made a game in 7 years. He chose to make God of War 2 on PS2 instead of PS3. Chose to make Ragnarok cross gen. Dude has very little ambition. Get him outta here.

The only game's director I have heard of is Kojima, and I have never played any of his games. I usually don't keep up with individuals in the industry.

It'd be Fumito Ueda if he had developed more games, but there's one guy whose output has always delivered across a variety of genres:

Silent Hill being my favourite game and series, have to go with Keiichirō Toyama. He also did Siren and Gravity rush as well as working on other Silent Hill titles.

Also like to mention Daniel Mullins for Inscryption and Guillaume Broche for Clair Obscure. 2 Games in the last few years that personally blew me away more than any other.

Suda 51 for Killer7 alone. Crazy daring game with incredible thematic depth.

That Russian guy who single handedly made Highfleet.

Lucas Pope. Bro was born to make games.

Yoko Taro is amazing. Not afraid to take risks and makes what he wants, whether or not it appeals to the majority. I always look forward to his works.

Kojima since MGS1.

Miyamoto
Vince Zampella
David Jaffe in his prime
I enjoy Druckmans work.
Wasn't Jason West more the director, Vince was the business guy?

I know the linear blurred a bit but looking back at IW/COD and Respawn stuff Vince isn't a director on any of them.

Picture him without hair. If you still don't know...

Blocked.
God forbid someone asks who it is without getting snarked at by the gatekeeping brigade. Not everyone memorizes dev faces like it's a pop quiz.

Just say the damn name and stop acting like knowing it makes you special. You're not clever, you're just insecure and desperate to feel superior over the most trivial shit

It was Hideo Kojima when he worked at Konami. Death Stranding made me not care about him anymore.

Kazunori Yamauchi is maybe the one i most respect, Gran Turismo series even nowadays still awesome!!

Are you insecure and desperate for snarking like this?

Classic deflection when you've got nothing to say. All I did was point out how weird and elitist it is to post a pic with no name and then act smug when someone doesn't instantly recognize it

Insecure? Nah. I just have zero patience for performative elitism. It's wild how pressed some of you get the moment someone challenges this weird little in-group routine

But Yoko Taro wears Emil mask so his pretty obvious to identify and second picture the name was on the post you quoted.

Stop crying. I referenced one word as a joke which he is famous for on twitter/X. His name is listed in the vote, I'm literally the only one who voted for him. Not sure what you're babbling on about... 'elitist', 'deflection', 'insecure' 'desperate'... is it that time of the month? Fuck me.

The elitist part is exactly you posting a pic without a name and acting like everyone should just magically get the reference. Then when someone dares to ask, you respond with smugness, sarcasm, and now sexist garbage

If your whole point hinges on an inside joke and a single vote, maybe—just maybe—you're not as clever or obvious as you think

How is Yoshinori Kitase not on this list? He directed Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy X.
